my beauty and fashion hot takes
hey y'all, in today's video I'm sharing my beauty and fashion hot takes (or unpopular opinions). I'm talking brands that are NOT high quality, even though they want us to believe they are, trends I don't like, and superior formulas.

I remember when I discovered brands like Make up forever, Mac, Ben Nye etc. Single eye shadows were for consumers and palettes were sold for makeup professionals. These palettes were never meant for individual usage. It was for the pros who are working on multiple clients with different skin types, shades etc. daily. They were never intended for regular folks who have 30 minutes to get ready including shower, getting dressed and ready for work or school. I literally barely have 15 minutes to have breakfast. I couldn’t understand how people would do these elaborate eyeshadow looks and where were they going. I went to work and school, never seen a single person with these eyeshadow looks influencers were doing on YT.

this is a great point. Of course there's all kinds of people out there who want to put in more or less time on their makeup. But, you're right in the sense that when these creators are doing makeup looks they're not getting ready at 6am to leave the house for 8-12 hours and can take essentially all the time they want. Many folks who may enjoy these more complex looks might not want to spend the time and get up early before work.

Great point! Before the internet got big, eyeshadow quads were more widely available. The same applies to fashion and social media fashion trends. I didn't see people dressed like that until I had to look for parking on a shopping street in Beverly Hills because it's close to a major hospital.

It's so refreshing to hear you flat out say that a trend is unappealing to you, whether you find it to be impractical, uncomfortable, or just just plain ugly. We all have different preferences and needs and don't have to all like the same thing just because it's trendy in the moment. I think that in the days of internet influencer madness we all need to be asking ourselves what we really think of something in the absence of someone else's opinion. Do we really like it? Can we really use it? Or do we just want it because we think we're supposed to...? And the skinfluencer thing...I totally agree! I feel like even the accounts run by experts can fuel an unhealthy obsession just because of how often they put out new content. It can easily lead someone down the rabbit hole of feeling a need to buy and use infinite products, which can easily to irritation and a worse result, anyway.

I'm over unhelpful "reviews" so this buying stuff you don't like definitely fits there 🙄 there's too many vids out there called reviews that are basically just do I like this product I tried one or two times...people want to know if a product would work for them or if it's any better than what we already have. We need to understand the product, formula, application, wear, colours etc. Just as an example I was watching highlighter reviews and out of 15 or so reviews only 1 person actually mentioned if the product had glitter or shimmer, what type of sheen it had, how it wore, in how far it emphasised or worsened texture. Also only 1 person had close ups that actually showed you how the product looked in reality. The rest was filtered garbage& pretty useless to give you an idea about the product outside of it being highlighting 🙄who would have thunk the highlighter would be highlighting....
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari Ай бұрын
yeah, I get what you're saying. I think how the video is titled plays a role in this. There's a difference between trying new makeup and a review of something. People expect more info in a review and I do think the community has gotten better with this over the years, although as you've highlighted it's not all the time

As a person who loves color, it seems to make more sense to focus on individual colors because I have the basics for me: medium-dark neutrals in matte, satin & metallic finishes, and sparkly jewel tones. There's a world of difference between buying things because advertisers/influencers/etc. marketed them to you, vs. buying something because it fits the specifics of what you want.

I also don’t like the wearing vs styling videos. The thesis is that “styling” is better but styling is just wearing shoes and a jacket most of the time? Just proves it’s only an internet trend bc normal people aren’t styling an outfit that doesn’t work as soon as you come inside and take off half of the accessories. Actually all fashion creators everywhere let’s plz stop pretending a jacket makes clothing into ~an outfit~. Once you see this lazy hack you can’t unsee it.

Eyeshadow palettes are designed as a curation of a colour story that you purchase to experiment with on your eyes. The value comes from the curated shadows pushing you into specific looks which you wouldn't think to make if you only bought your best neutrals in single shadows. I still love my way too big to finish collection of 12 palettes, though after getting a Natasha Denona 15 pan palette I made sure to only purchase palettes with easily removable pans to curate my own colour stories and dupe out new palettes that catch my attention.

I understand where you're coming from for the single shadows... if you use one colour a lot getting that colour in a single shadow is great. I think that works well for people who know what works for them and do more or less the same look most of the time. When I was younger this was me. For me now makeup is about artistic expression... I never wear the same look 2 days in a row. I aim to approach a palette and do something new with it just about every time I use it. I see eye shadow palettes like sets of paints or coloured pencils... we don't buy colours one at a time (unless you're an artist and replacing particular single colours when you already have all of the colours you need). It is easy to go overboard... but charge me $90 for a multicoloured palette I will never finish over $45 for a single shadow any day of the week. There is far more enjoyment in the former! :P [Since I love the artistry and also dislike waste, I tend to get palettes on depop]

The superpuff is the right weight of jacket for Toronto, where the temp miiiiiiight go down to -20 once or twice a year, but we mostly have long rainy winters with a handful of snowy days. The last 5 winters have been very mild in Toronto, so there's no reason to have a super heavy duty coat. My unpopular opinion is that most highlighters are way overrated, overpriced and take up way too much space in a palette, and especially as a stand alone product in massive pans. Most normal people don't don't use that much for day to day wear. And even for full glam, unless you're doing it every single day/night, you're not going to go through a massive pan fast enough. It's in the name: it's a highlighter, which inherently means you use less than all the other products. I think highlighters are just a money grab.

I think most of the videos i watch in one sitting are between 10-30 minutes, provided they're interesting. And watch out for "derm" videos. Most "board certified dermatologists" don't know as much as the chemists who create skin care product formulas. Most of them are trying to sell you their own overpriced "private label" skincare which is no better than most. A good skin science parent company to look for are any labels produced under L'Oreal...there are 30+ in a variety of price points.

I got a few pairs of earrings on etsy but then gave up (which is good because I mostly wear my boyfriend's old shirts and leggings anyway, who was I kidding?) I do like Jennifer's shorts though, I watch them time to time. One of these days I may turn to single eyeshadows again but eyes are my favorite part of makeup right now so I'm happy with my palettes. To offset the idea that some shades will just go unused, I make a point to no pan left behind each of them from time to time.

Personally I wear the clothes I buy from fast fashion in my real everyday life. It's affordable, flattering & convenient. Which is extremely difficult to find being plus size However, they are not built to last which comes with cheaply made fashion. 2.)Birkenstocks sandals remind me of Jesus sandals & they just look uncomfortable. 🙅🏻‍♀️ 3.) I feel the same way about the look of Dior makeup.

Those puffy jackets are cute on some people, but I prefer jackets that cover over the thighs, more coverage for better protection from the weather. Plastic materials like acrylic, polyester, rayon, and other fake fabrics that stink after only 10 minutes of wearing are the bane of my existence. They are horrible and my body hates them. I get itchy and sweaty just thinking about them... AND THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!!!! WHY!!!??? It's Florida, we need organic, natural fabrics like silk, satin, linen, cotton, not these plastic cr@p!!! The only clothing that is made of plastic that does not bother me are from Coalatree. They use recycled plastic bottles and my body feels comfortable with their clothing. They mix in coffee grounds too. I don't know how they do it, but they figured out how to create plastic fabrics that don't stink or get dirty at all.

Kind of disagree on video length: I find videos on one smallish concept, especially "101" type of videos more comfortable about the 10-15 minute mark. If your topic is a question that could be answered in two minutes, like "In simple terms - why are mushrooms not plants?", 10 minutes would be plenty

A 101 style video is a great video to keep short! That's the perfect kind of content to do a more general or 'surface' dive into a topic to start someone off!

Nooo! I just bought a Puma pair (puma is ranked better by Good On You than Nike, adidas, etc) that look similar to the air force ones 😂 and I’m 27 (bought them for a weeklong WORK trip, it’s a business casual dress code and I leave Sunday) Don’t tell me I’m channeling high school for my work trip!!! 😫🤣

Real life Shawna isn't as sassy! I want you to love your new shoes and just because they're not for me doesn't mean they're not for you or you can't rock em!

Kudos on all points. My biggest "Pet Peeve" are the speed talkers. Make longer vids or a 2 part vid. If I have to rewind to listen I'm moving on.

I have to say I really don't regret my two eyeshadow pallets with 8 colours each. BUT they are pretty basic and are perfect for my green eyes. I use them since 3 Years (maybe shouldn't??) and will eventually pan them totally. I stopped viewing Skinfluencer when I had a skincare-routine and noticed, that a lot of products that where "great" one year ago now happened to be "bad" in a way and you should buy the more expensiv new product. One topic you should cover is the "there are no classic pieces" trend. I hate these Videos so much. These people tell you that everything comes back but in a different way so you can toss it. What kind of mindset is this? And it's not even totally true. As you said all these kids look like my 20 years ago. Except the Sambas, which I also hated back then.

Sambas we’re/are everyone’s first indoor soccer shoe. They aren’t the best indoor soccer shoe but they’re very hardy and durable. I’ve always seen middle school/high school kids wearing it as part of their everyday outfits. But I don’t understand why Sambas because the new fashion girl shoe. I don’t think they’re ugly. I wore them in middle school with lots of outfits but, I just don’t get why every person on Pinterest owns a pair.

I turned my KZfaq autoplay off so I don't watch many videos shorter than 25 minutes so I won't have to look for more videos constantly

Hmmm I have to disagree with you on dresses over pants. 1. It's comfy 2. It's warm 3. I think it's cute 4. No chafing Plus I really just don't care if anyone thinks I'm cringe. Thinking certain clothes are not for you personally is one thing, but thinking other people are cringe for what they wear is definitely a "you" problem. Thinking of people wearing "outdated" trends as cringe is part of the overconsumption problem tbh

Well I have white air forces and adidas superstar. I’ve had them for yearssss and they have lasted for me. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ I realize it’s personal taste but with the shirt you have on I don’t know where you get the audacity to talk about “ugly” and style 😂😂😂

I like and dislike all of the things you say, if that makes any sense. This video is mostly just saying how cringe you find things and not going into much more detail and you just make it known that you are cringing over stuff without going too much into it which defeats the purpose of bringing these topics up in the first place. I want to hear someone talking about these things genuinely. Don’t just say something is cringe, that’s not a good joke. I want to hear facts, your opinion that doesn’t involve things like that, your true opinion and not just a joke like “it’s just cringe”. its not 2015. I thought we stopped saying that everything was cringe. You can talk about something and give your opinion without always saying “it’s so cringe” like girl wth. You can do better than that. I encourage you to watch Cara Nicole’s channel. She gives her opinion while also trying to explain why she thinks the way she does, and the things she believes in, etc.
influencers are missing the point with these videos
