I usually bring food from trips as “souvenirs” … like cheese, wine, spicies … whatever is local and im interested to use up.

The best souvenir for me is a postcard. Just a paper card. I use them as bookmarks, or wallpaper. Love my postcards.

I was working in an H&M distribution center in the netherlands. Cos, other stories, monkey and all of these h&m brands had their clothes packaged in plastic film and they had workers who's only job was to remove the plastic film and to put it in a paper bag b4 they delivered it.

In Australia buying boomerangs from indigenous peoples is a fantastic way to get a souvenir and support local peoples. There are some boomerang makers who have been profitable enough to be able to buy their land back! Always look for markets & small craft places selling them tho, souvenir stores are made out of the country and aren't in any way helping indigenous peoples feed themselves or keep their culture alive

I bought a new ugly Christmas sweater, but I have been wearing it every Christmas since (about 10 years) and I will continue to wear it. At first I thought it was funny, but for my family and me it's now become a traditional item like the other Christmas decorations. I recommend buying just one and keeping it! One day I will be old with grand kids and I will still wear it 😊

The hydropacks/water vests/camelbacks are very useful while hiking! They keep you from having a large water bottle that is shifting the weight awkwardly to a side, and the packs usually also have space for you to keep keys and other objects in them. It is a specific kind of situation they are best suited for, but for long distance hiking I think they are pretty essential. I do not think that every runner needs one.

I swap out gum with mints. The mints are much more natural and so many mints come in tins and the tins are so useful, I usually end up reusing them, but they are also recyclable.

I think anti-hauls confuse some folks 😅 at no point is she saying you can’t buy any of these things-she’s just personally not partaking in further overconsumption, and encouraging you to consider your own consumption when you’re about to click “add to cart” or swipe your card at checkout. Also, low key hoarding! Lol I LOVE books, as do many. But I absolutely do not NEED another book right now, even though there are ones I want, because I can look at myself and say hey, you haven’t read some of these yet, maybe start there first? lol it’s never personal, but I think these are great mirrors for ourselves that we often don’t love looking into! 😊 always good to self reflect!

My grandma kept wooden matches on the back of her toilets to mask the smell when someone when to the bathroom. I do it now too 😂

Another great video. I'm here to champion running vests though. For those who run regularly and longer, they hold water, gels etc. but are also a good place to keep a phone, keys etc. and a personal alarm, inhalers for us asthmatics. I totally agree we all only need one running vest, and to repair it as needed!

I'm a knitter and I'm anti-hauling yarn that has plastic fibres in it. Not a yarn snob, I don't have anything against acrylic yarn because it's cheap but because of the impact. There's fantastic natural fibre yarn out there that doesn't break the bank.

I used to agree on the childrens clothes. Byt, my daughter is 5 and attends an outdoor kindergarden. Her clothes is WORN out! And it happens quickly, as-well as her sometimes skipping sizes etc. Once kids reach a certain age and size, the clothes is simply to the bone and it's difficult to find it in good condition, thrifting the exact type and size of say outdoor clothing etc.

I love reducing my waste but when I see others just throwing trash everywhere and not giving a crap it truly pisses me off.

As a mom, I have had to spend very little on kids clothes. Literally hundreds of pieces have been given to me and I have purchased only a select handful new. Linen in kids clothes is hard to find, though, so I'm altering a couple of thrifted linen shirts to make a dress for my toddler to be cool and covered this summer!

I feel like running vests are fine if you use them? Like anything else! I also feel like some of the people anti-hauling running vests are in similar circles as those who think you have to be really good at a hobby to 'deserve' gear for the hobby? Or like if you have a running vest, you're "taking yourself too seriously". Like there's a whole trend of videos of people making fun of those who use running vests for running *only* 5k, like you have to run marathons to deserve to use a vest. Anyways I feel like a running vest helps with boob bounce and while I don't always bother, it's also just practical to have something to carry your phone+keys+wallet with you, and women's clothing doesn't have the best pockets, and if you're going to buy something then a vest or a belt or one of the arm carrier thingys it's all kind of the same (and the reason I feel like anti hauling running vests is due to people putting other people's hobbies down is that I haven't seen anyone anti-haul all those other accessories for carrying things on runs).

Anti hauling cleaning supplies. Hot water, microfiber cloths, vinegar and lemon is all you need. I do use an eco friendly laundry powder, but the rinse is with vinegar. 🙂

I usually get one "souvenir" per trip. If I'm visiting a National Park here in the US I buy one of their stoneware mugs that are handmade here in the USA. Otherwise, I get either yarn from a local shop (just bought some amazing hand died lace weight silk/mohair on my last trip!) or tea from a local shop (found my very favorite in Salt Lake City!)

All good ideas, I loved it. When it comes to small appliances like air fryers, I buy them at the thrift store. There is an abundance of small appliances there once they get past being the must have item of the moment. Some of these I use a lot to avoid turning on the oven when its hot. I had one crockpot for 35 years before I had to replace it.

I have a 3 month old and 💯, I have his entire wardrobe for the first year of life. And not only is it all second hand, all except less than 10 items were *free* from family hand me downs or my Buy Nothing group.

Also I love books, a, a writer and read voraciously, but I find the “whoops I bought $100+ of books” or “bought 50 books haul” videos intensely uncomfortable

I think a running vest is something that is needed to be honest. I use one with every run but I only have one! I don’t need more then that. It holds my keys, water, snacks, phone, and my mace!

Anti-hauling new furniture! I have just moved to a new place, and every piece of furniture I needed came from the thrift store or from my local Buy Nothing Group!

I gotta say though, having done some long distance running, I can definitely see the appeal of those hydration vests. You are absolutely correct that they are unnecessary if you run more casually/shorter distances. But for long distances, there comes a point where you are running far enough that you absolutely need to bring your hydration with you to replenish on the go, and once you get up to that distance, it becomes a real pain to carry a water bottle as you run. Your grip gets really tired. It's far easier if you can find a way to attach the water to your torso. Personally, I wound up getting a small backpack-style bag and a hydration bladder that I could stick inside it. A hydration vest would have done the job too. It really depends on how long your runs are.

Personally, while I do agree with some of these things, there's also things I really do not agree with. For example the candles. I have a couple and the light flickering and the smell calms/comforts me so much. I do think buying one every week just for the sake of it is way too much. But i have around 4 or 5 with each a different scent that I like to light in the winter when it's dark earlier. Secondly, the air scent and perfume. My dorm room smelled like mold (there's none) but the smell didnt go. Now it's gone since I started using those wooden sticks in scented liquid (idk what theyre called). I also of course use de-humidifying blocks but the smell made me unable to sleep. I didnt have a choice and its much better now. Same for perfume. Deodorant with scent makes my sweat smell disgusting. So I have to use ones without scent. But I also know it'll still smell unless I put on some perfume. I spray it on my clothes and not directly on my skin though. Third and last one I remember is the 'collecting is just an excuse to overconsume'. Maybe. But my special interest as an autistic person just so happened to be dolls. So I will buy them. Its what makes me happy and theres more harmful things to do in order to be happy in my opinion. Same goes for books. Im an avid reader. So Im going to buy books. I read in english and my library has nowhere near a good enough selection to suit my reading taste. So buying them it is (thrift store, for the same reason, arent usable either) Edit: About the souvenirs... it makes my grandma happy to see all of the magnets we bring her from our trips. She hasnt left Belgium in her 86 years of living and I like that she can at least experience some bits of traveling through our stories and the magnets to remember where we've been. I can assure you, her face lighting up when we bring a new magnet home is priceless. I also collect postcards from my travel destinations which I hang on my closet. Its a whole different story if you bring a whole suitcase of worthless souvenirs

I understand air fryers, but especially with an old oven it is handy. It's also way cheaper because not only is it faster, but it also doesn't need preheating (at least ours) and our old oven takes a looong time to preheat, cooks unevenly and the heat bleeds out, so it has to keep reheating itself a lot more than a new oven

YES, buying from a local artist (musician, jeweler, whatever!) while travelling! It's so much fun to trawl craft fairs, little hole in the wall shops, and such. I'm also a huge fan of getting local drinks and condiments to take home. I live in the US, and if you travel 3 hours in any direction, the food is completely different. I love it. I AM grateful for the gluten free trend... it is abjectly foolish to not eat gluten if you're not suffering from an actual allergy/intolerance. It's delicious. It's higher protein and less processed than gf alternatives. It's harmless unless you're a specific kind of mutant. (You will know because you can't breathe, get off the toilet, or possibly both.) But for those of us who can't have gluten, the fact that now we can find palatable bread in most grocery stores is miraculous.

I love the souvenir thing! My little brother got into a college a few states over and we had to visit to make sure he liked it. I wanted to get something to remember the trip by so I went to the natural food store and got some bob’s creamy wheat hot cereal (can’t find it in my state) and a nice handmade mug which I’ve been using like crazy :D

I will say that the running vest is more designed for longer distance running generally 45 min + where you can start packing in not just your water but your energy refuel packs, electrolytes etc. I never used one until i started to increase my running distance to closer to 10k and up. For short running sessions its totally not an essential. I do think it's hyped on social as a must have 😄

Poopoori (sp?) completely works! It makes a film on top essentially. However, it is essential oil based and shouldn't be used around pets, and is easy to diy with alcohol and essential oil of any kind of people already have those on hand.

My usual holiday souvenirs are photographs :) I still have a water bottle I bought in Seville in 2019 (a double-skin 500 ml steel one), which I use regularly (live near Edinburgh, and the tap water is lovely).

I'm not anti-hauling protein products. I've spent the last 2 years eating plain chicken and cod because I can't get all the ridiculously fortified processed foods where I live. As soon as I move back to the UK you can betcha I'm buying all the protein yoghurts and bagels I can get my hands on - I'm an amateur bodybuilder so for me, the protein products are a welcome relief from boring wholefoods lol.

I got great shoes from Aldi. I have a multi cooker that does instant pot and air fry plus pther fuctiojs like slow cook and its really been used well and my blender. I think im gonna thrift for a conter top grill

Fun fact. Collagen creme does not work, but the marketers are very smart about it. They have to be truthful on their labels, but they can omit certain truths. Yes, collagen is the component in the skin that gives it's elasticity and yes it would make it better to somehow but it back in the skin after it slowly breaks down. But the collagen molecule is very big and cannot penetrate the skin to get to the collagen layer. It would be better to ingest it another way for actual effects. So whenever you read the label of those kind of cremes and you see collagen anhydrous then you instantly know it won't do the wonders they promise you it will.

I have a single Christmas Sweater, it was a present from my husband when we were still dating. It's an octopus with a Santa hat holding presents with all his arms. While I won't be getting any new Christmas sweaters cause I feel no need for them, I also won't be getting rid of the one my husband got me cause I love to wear it at Christmas and it's just a silly thing to enjoy and no reason to get rid of it when it's still in great condition. All the water bottles my husband and I have are ones that have been sent to us by our companies and we use them every time we go out and have given extras to family members that needed them as well.

Books. My library is small and doesn't carry any new books until 6-12 months after they have come out, if ever. I do love audiobooks, second hand books and borrowing from others. The library will only get in "other/indie" books if there is enough request from the public. I do support my local bookstore for new books. They get a portion of the sale.

I do like Stanley items, but I buy them second hand only. The Stanley lunch box, I bought from Facebook marketplace all dented and beat up (lots of character). And I have to qualms about tossing it around and denting it some more...

I found tofu wrapped in only cardboard in my asian supermarket ! It is also cheaper than elsewhere (I live in France and tofu is very expensive). The silken tofu is so great but the "hard" one is more like the one you have in miso soup in restaurant so no hard enough to really cook it in different ways...

I love brooches and wear them a lot all year round. At the best I have one on an outdoor coat and one on a blazer I wear at the office. So my souvenirs nowadays are antique store bought brooches from different cities. I love the fact that I actually have those memories from travelling with me every day ❤️

I generally buy shoes, socks, and undergarments only new and I translate that for my kiddo (I bought used climbing shoes once - bad choice). Other baby clothing, heck yeah there’s some great pre-loved stuff out there.

I agree with all except hydration vests and air fryer. I run very often and use my vest when I run more than an hour. I only have one and that's all I need. I also use my air fryer 3-4 times a week, so for me its worth to have, esp since I don't own a microwave

Ah, mass-produced 'memories'! Some of my favorite memories from travel are honestly the photos. But I do have two lovely things I picked up in Denmark that I still use today because they are not just decor. I love the idea of going to thrift stores on holiday. The water bottle thing -- and cups in general -- it's the idea that we need choices and options each day, I think, and this fear of lack. Who really needs that much water or coffee at once, all of the time? I've had to ask myself this question. Ha.

Protein: a person only can use so much protein for their size and mass amounts of protein can lead to serious health problems. Especially true for young athletes in school sports programs where coaches sometimes overload the athletes with protein. My physical therapist had to talk to his son’s coach about how to figure out how much protein is too much protein. Air fryers: there are energy saving benefits to putting something in a small heating device rather than using an entire oven for twice as long to heat up some chicken nuggets (home made of course). Time and heat savings can be worth it. 10 minutes in an air fryer producing a small amount of heat vs 30 minutes in a big regular oven. Helpful especially in the summer when keeping cool is a premium. Great thoughts on a lot of things we overpay for and contain little to no value. I switched to an e-reader years ago and my life has felt so less burdened with massive amounts of books. I donated over 200 books to the library for their sale and it felt great. For cosmetics, as long as you don’t have problem skin that may require a physician and prescriptions, use a good cleanser, and moisturize for your skin type and don’t forget the sunscreen. Expensive creams often contain more expensive ingredients but they are not necessary. I treat myself to a spray bottle of rose water $6.99 US at a discount store to spray on after I wash my face. Necessary? No, but it is a small thing that feels so good. You don’t have to spend lots of money on every new product on Tik tok to have nice skin. The KISSPrinciple works just fine. Keep It Simple Stupid. Good to know about designer brands. I look forward to that video.

When I visited Aarhus I spent my days at the museum and at the thrift. I got myself a button for my punk vest with a very whimsical fairy on it and brought a friend of mine a button that said "beer is healthy, more beer is more healthy" in comic sans in danish and he loved it and I paid like 20 crowns for them?

I would love to see an impact analysis of "Buy Nothing" groups. I've personally gotten some great (free!) second-hand items from the group for my neighbourhood, but sometimes I wonder whether they're just a way for people to get rid of poor-quality or damaged items.

My Baby clothes i gor from Friends and family as handdowns, as their Kids are 1,5Yrs or over. But also Pregnancy clothes. A lot of things you can use, that are not pregnancy specific. But in winter i needed a coat and trousers as well as tights. The tights were the only thing i got new. The rest was all second hand over a platform or from my best friend. She will also get all that stuff back and all the baby clothes, because she maybe wants another child. Also a lot of the other stuff for babies as my stroller or blankets and other big items that you just need a certain time, are either from friends and family or second hand stuff. The running vest my husband really needs...but he is a marathon runner and training sessions that are 3h long....but that is not the norm, i know.

I recently started chewing sap gum! You can find on any spruce variety (do your research first, and don't swallow it!), and it tastes like a mix between spruce and bubblegum! Completely biodegradable, but looks like real gum once you've been chewing it for a second. They call is Arctic gum here

As you're talking about anti-hauling souvenirs and souvenir clothing, what am I wearing? My souvenir top from Mt Rushmore, bought 9 years ago. I'm the tourist that actually wears my souvenir tops. And what do I do when they no longer look good? Cut off the sleeves, hem the bottom and use it as a shopping bag of course.

I look art like prints or food when I seek a souvenir ❤ I can hang it and it won't get old.

About the tofu: I agree that tofu from the Asian market is of better quality, but the tofu they sell in a big Dutch supermarket (Albert Heijn) has advertised: made from European soy. I think that tofu that is sold in Asian markets, is shipped over the whole world. So, it can be more sustainable to buy tofu from the regular supermarket :)

Water bottles are just out of hand. I have two for like 7 years and I still use them every day, I see no point buying new ones all the time. I've never even heard of plastic free tofu btw. I never get the hype about drive thrus, I used it like 2 times in my entire life when going home from the airport at the middle of the night when no other food source is open and we just want to grab something asap, but normally it's just so much better to go in and just order at the counter.

None of your local Asian markets sell bulk tofu/make their own tofu? They don't in my current area, but it's the first kind of shop where I found it available unpackaged.

I disagree with books, because we need to support the authors and bookshops, particularly independent, community bookshops that stock less well known books. I agree that we shouldn't buy books off of Amazon, but I disagree that we shouldn't buy new books and only use libraries.

I mean, I have two holiday themed jumpers - and I've been wearing those for years now (and will continue to do so) - admittedly, only in december, but then again, that is also true about stuff like swimwear or very light summer clothes for the hottest few weeks of the year - you only wear that on specific occasions, which wont happen all year long, but as long as you keep them and reuse them annually, I don't see anything wrong with that?

a very good air freshener alternative in bathroom is simply to light a match and throw it in the toilet bowl. The smell of a freshly blown out match is much less powerful than the artificial smells and covers much better the toilet odors than the fresheners too, in my opinion.

I LOVE USING THE PLASTIC CONTAINERS TOFU COMES IN TO ORGANIZE MY JEWELLERY OR THINGS IN MY DRAWERS !!! THEY WORK AMAZING. find ways to reuse plastic in your home it’s easier than you think !

I’m not antihauling my tofu either lol. While I’ve made tofu from scratch before, I work full time in a physically demanding job and I simply do not have the time or energy to do that now.

I like to buy practical things when I travel. Australia has been metric for 50 years but it is difficult to buy a tape measure for sewing that is only metric ( I don't do patchwork so don't need inches) I found the world's best tape measure in Europe last year. It is only metric, whichever end you pick up one side starts at zero and it is colour blocked in 10cm sections. I do a lot of sewing so using it makes me very happy and brings back fond memories.

I recently went to Cuba 🇨🇺 to visit my parents, and though I did get a few postcards from a regular souvenir store, most of my souvenirs I got from artisans (there's several market place for handmade gifts) or the vintage market in old Habana. I got my partner a several old old coins, and the seller gifted my an old post card of a cuban possum which I love!

The part of second hand shop to thrift store to landfill in global south, they actually sell it to Aduanas, they make sacs that they sell to aduanas of 3rd world countries and then sell them in accordance to the quality of the products, from 50 dollar to 200.

Running vests - it depends the length you are running. If you only run a 5k or 10k, possibly even 15k when it is not hot, then you are totally fine without one. If you start running half marathons+ especially in training where there are no water stations, then you likely need one.

Whenever my grandmother would use air freshener my grandfather would say "It smells like somebody shit in the strawberry patch!" So yeah, I've never used air fresheners like that. I have put baking soda in open jars which helps some and exhaust fans as well. But mostly just keeping things clean and opening windows when there is a bad smell.

I agree with the books comment. I love collecting and reading books but I realized I was spending so much money and donating so many that were just meh to me. I love using my library as an alternative to support authors. Libraries also have to purchase their books and it's a consistent big order for authors to help them out. The more you read the books from your favorite authors at the library the more likely they will be to order more by that author. My library also has a request system that lets us request the books we want that they don't have. This allows authors to still be supported and also if we don't like the book its fine because other people will pick it up at the library and it'll still get loved. The books I end up loving I can just look for second-hand. I also want to add an additional note that books have been having an increased amount of over-consumption because of all the special editions coming out. I've seen videos of people with 10 different editions of the same books which just feels like too much. I just feel like people are being pressured into buying special editions too because you either get it then or it's gone and it leads people to make hasty decisions. I just feel like we don't need 30+ different editions available for the same exact book or series.

On the topic of the protein craze, I would like to add that actually consuming more protein than our bodies needs or can process can lead to kidney failure/proteinuria!!!

If I need a new water bottle because mine breaks I’m absolutely not thrifting one. That’s so gross to me 😂 but I agree with only have one and not having them in different colors. Also, the only way for me to not have cavities (I floss and brush as well) is by chewing gum with xylitol in it.
