WINNER OF BEST MALE ACTOR IN A LEAD PERFORMACE: RUDI KØHNKE. EKKO SHORTLIST AWARDS 2016
In a post-apocalyptic world in human decay, a protective father and his teenage daughter are forced to bring a mute teenage boy to their hide-out, which puts their relationship under decisive pressure and expose them to outer dangers.
ØDELAND is a short drama about walking the thin line between doubt and hope and the choice between truth and lie - a story about a father wanting to do everything in his power to sustain hope in his daughter in a seemingly hopeless world.
Made by a team of students of Danish independant film school, 18 Frames.

The acting in this is phenomenal - it's like the actors really got into the role. Feels real, not overdone like a lot of films of this genre. I especially like the fact the film is in Danish - not enough foreign post-apocalyptic films out there so It's a breath of fresh air. As an aspiring filmmaker myself, It really helps to analyse short films like these. I feel like I'm constantly critiquing shorts rather than appreciating them, but this film has no faults. I applaud the team behind it.

This was outstanding . Whoever wrote this understands what it's really like ... No great heroics ... nothing is simple ... nothing black and white . Just hard decisions , made with little or no hard facts , and no time to think . Fear an ever-present thing , gnawing at you ... Nothing is what it seems ... and you can never be sure of anything. The fatigue and sadness from mean , vicious things happening , one right after another ... with no hope of relief ... weighing you down every moment ... You do what you can , with what you have ... and then live with what you've done . The blood on your hands never quite washes away ... you can still see it , even if others don't . Fate , or God ...whatever you wish to believe ... seems to delight in torturing us with circumstances that seem to be one thing , and then , after you have acted , is found to be something else entirely . It happens too often to be random chance ... but we shy away from believing that there is some greater ... malicious force at work . It is no wonder that primitive peoples feared both Gods and the Devils ... Viewed the Gods as petty and spiteful , taking delight in playing games with men's lives ... We want the world to be a good place , or at least neutral ... even with all evidence to the contrary . As a father of daughters , I was relieved to see her survive this time ... but knowing the next horror is waiting for her , because she did . And yes ... I have lied to my daughters too ... to let them believe that there is a bit of goodness in the world .... It's what fathers do ...

Jesper Quistgaard Indeed , I did ... I have had to make those shoot/no shoot decisions ... and no matter how many times you tell yourself you did it right ... there will always be that cold feeling up your spine , that maybe you didn't . Once the bullet is out of the barrel ... there is no taking it back . Most men do not kill out of malice , but out of love ... love for God , country , family ... or maybe just the guys standing on either side of him in the fight ... We tell ourselves we take life to save lives ... and pray , on those dark nights when we are all alone , and have to face our real selves ... that it's true . But I think , my friend , that you and I both have heard the mocking laughter of the mad Gods on the wind ... taunting us for the lies we tell others ... and more shameful ... the ones we tell ourselves . The causes may lie with them , and the games they play ... but the blame lies squarely on us ... As men , we cannot shirk it , nor dodge it , but must accept it ... take it on our shoulders , to carry , like the weapons and gear that is our lot to bear . No complaints ... it's what we signed up for , when we accepted being a man , and all that goes with that name .

Jesper Quistgaard I'm ex military , and have worked for many years now in the security field as a contractor . I'm not one of the high-speed , low-drag guys that you want to talk to . I know a bunch of those guys , and they have much better stories than I do . I don't tell the " he came out of the bushes , looking away from me , weapon down , so I shot him ... " stories . Most everybody I know , tells the funny stories ... The stupid shit that goes wrong . The " ... and then , I tripped and fell on my ass ..." stuff ... Sometimes the cautionary tales ... the " There we were , doing our thing ... fat , dumb and happy ... when it all blew up ... " kind of thing ... In the last few years , I have spent a good deal of time teaching various people the how , what , where , ( and most importantly) ... WHY ... of employing weapons , gear and equipment. And just as critical ... what to do after the shooting stops ... Using trauma kits and advanced first aid ... for all the big , bloody holes ... sucking lung wounds ... cuts , burns , broken bones and such , that result from such activities... It is truly astounding , the amount of damage that modern weapons can do to a human body , in a short amount of time . How to get medical help on the scene , and how to get your casualties out , without doing them further damage , or getting them killed doing it . Something that the movies seldom go into , and shooters don't want to think about , but desperately need to know . Not a lot of money in it , but a great deal of satisfaction , in helping others get up to speed , as far as weapons handling goes , while gaining a safety and security mindset. I might shoot you a couple of story ideas , sometime , if you guys are interested... but they will be fiction . An amalgamation of stories guys have told me , and things I've seen done ... I'm sure you have individuals around you , who can tell pretty much the same ones . Keep doing what you guys are doing ... I really like your style .

@@17MrLeon Exactly Leon! I too thought they were not cannibals, but just another family out there. So if the father just wrestled the kid (who had no bullets) instead of immediately shooting him, then both of these two survivor groups might have bonded instead and grew to start a community. It's heavily implied that Clara is into Jakup and not just because he's probably the only other boy around her age. Still, I really like this short for keeping us guessing and just like Romeo Whiskey said, it's the dread of not knowing, not being sure. After all, they DID find the kid so near the cannibal's hospital base. However, for me, the kid would be having withdrawals and shakes and other symptoms of consuming human meat, which weren't shown at all, so I really really doubt he or his family are cannibals. I'll have to rewatch the short and see by silhouettes of the people dragging the latest naked victim.

Shorts have a purely creative motivation behind them, as opposed to justifting astronomical theatrical movie making expenses. Plus, lately there is an infestation of pointless, storyless, thoughtless bs shown in movie theatres, with content so bad its a wonder how it made it past sceenings.

Jesper Quistgaard excellent piece of work !! I am so tired of the same exact apocalyptic story with cheesy effects , lackluster acting and dumb plot . You kept it simple but beautiful and managed to concentrate more on a fathers love for his daughter than the apocalypse ! Believable story and Jakob had to die or the father would have lost everything. Jakob’s family or comrades would have killed them to survive seeing they were cannibals . That was beautiful that the father lied to his daughter to insure hope . To hold on to a piece of humanity in its darkest of times !!! I salute you Jesper Quistgaard .... kept directional and making films !!! 👍🏾👍🏾✊🏽✊🏽👌🏾👌🏾

This short film was nothing short of amazing. The story that unfolds is gritty and really impactful with it's message. You really can't trust anyone in a post apocalyptic world, not even your own family. Yet there are things and people in said world that are out to get you and deprive you of anything they can. Sometimes their intention is just the same as your own; survival. This concept sat heavy throughout the film and did a excellent job portraying it. He lied to keep his daughter safe, along with whatever little innocence she has left. Great acting, beautiful cinematography with perfect locations, well edited, and produced. Definitely a thumbs up.

I've been watching these post-apocalyptic short stories.. over a year after the pandemic started.. and after all the chaos and economic collapse started in the U.S.. In my opinion, we are on the verge of a war.. and I have found useful information in these stories. Although the principle of lying is inherently wrong, this man did right by not divulging the truth to his daughter as she is fragile.. and he is trying to instill some hope into her life. Excellent storyline, as well as superb acting!

Can’t wait to watch your movies in the future. Whoever directed this and who ever write this did a phenomenal job. Even the small moments of the gun falling onto his leg and it being what woke him up. Really well done. Also props to the cinematographer and lighting people like hot damn!!

I can't add anything more positive than what has already been commented.. but an added comment helps a video earn deserved views and more recognition. Brilliant, seriously. Awesome performances all round. There's no doubts the makers of this are on their ways to bigger things and success. Morality.. it can walk a fine, if not faded, line...

This is my first time watching your channel. I will be watching more!! I was quite impressed!! It was realistic & not over the top. More movies should be like this one, without special effects like I see so much of here in the States. Thanks for the subtitles!

Great screenplay! I could feel the emotion, connect with the decisions, actions and emotions of the characters, even the regret of the father at the end when realization set in, I have seen many post apocalyptic shorts and I would rank this among the top, I almost didn't watch it because it is mostly in - I'm guessing german - I'm super glad I didn't skip this one, this film was superb!

I would have watched some 50+ shorts in the last 2 weeks... like abt 10-15 of them and commented only on this one... this is awesomest... As a father to a daughter, I jus cannot take chances and wait for things to go wrong. Plain protective instinct... saved her from physical and emotional trauma...

Well earned award for best acting. In some shots the lead actor has such sad eyes. I could almost taste that whiskey. Wish she had not spat it out later on. Such a sad, sad story when good people misjudge. Well told, well acted, well filmed. I greatly enjoyed (if that is the right word) this film.

Very strong performance and story all the way to the end. This would fit perfectly into the start a tv show series. All the decisions in here are rational and make sense which adds to the realism of the entire film. Overall incredible job
