I drilled and vacuumed mine out yesterday. Got every last bit out. No cutting and took less than three hours and a twenty dollar auger bit 😁😀

I don't remove the rectangle I cut out. Grind short sides and one long side through. Grind last long side half way through and bend it open like a door, it will close back once without breaking. Doesn't make for less welding, but it stays lined up and held in place perfectly while you weld.

After cutting the door I found it real easy to remove the honey comb with an AIR CHISEL. Run it the length around the curved inner walls to separate the honey comb and lift it out in one piece. Also you should fabricate a new door larger than the hole and do a LAP WELD because of the large gap you will need to fill if using the cut out piece. JMHO

Good call buddy, wanted mine to look as stock, and unmolested, as possible, didn't want the door to show, so I used a think 1mm disc to cut it out and turned out that with 0.8mm wire in the MIG it filled the gap perfectly, then ground back really smooth, showing no trace of the surgery lol !

Great video and I'm glad I watched as I was going to cut the back out! Just one question - do you have any thoughts on cutting the whole oval pipe out and just joining the two cast parts together? Obviously I would have to modify the exhaust mounts etc but I thought it would reduce a bit of vibration as there is a shorter reciprocating mass hanging off the back?

Sadly removing the cat convertor would definitely require a re-map, but it's not difficult, you can buy plug in devices with good instructions if you wanted to.

Do any fault codes generate or CEL come on after the Cat material is removed? Are spacers required for the O2 sensors or just no difference indicated by the monitoring system? Great detailed vid, thanks !!

My bike is remapped with a Screaming Eagle Super Tuner and open filter, so its a "stage one tune", and i would recommend this if taking out your cat material..!

I thought I made it clear in the video buddy - you re-map the ECU FIRST... BEFORE you remove the cat... and that is not a DIY job unless you buy the V&H Fuel Pack with the relevant App - my bike was done already when I bought it...

Hey pal , long time it’s been but, you are always on point with your advice. This is what I want your opinion on. I’m deleting my cat and the primary exhaust box. So, I will still have my stock headers and o2 sensor but, from the o2 back will be a straight pipe to my m4 slip on which is open as well. Question is will I have any issues or will it do any damage ? I will be getting the Ecu flashed but, not for a few months after I do this. Also adding a high flow air filter and capping off the ais system to get rid of any major popping. Also do you think it’s really necessary to block the ais / air intake system? I kinda like how my old bike sounded with a lil popping but, don’t want to harm my new Z900 Kawi at all. Thanks bud ✌🏼

Hi buddy, if this is a new bike, I would speak with your dealer as am not quite sure how the ECU works on your new Kawasaki. Certainly on a Triumph, like the Bonnevilles, you can remove the cat completely and run open pipes and simply run the engine for 10mins on idle and the ECU will 'learn' the new system and adapt accordingly, but not sure if your Kawasaki's ECU will do this, or whether it's set up that way... not even sure they are re-flash-able, you many have to fit a Power Commander, or other fueling device, but this is not an area of experience for me, so just out of caution, I would refer you to your dealer mate. As you can see, this video is on a Harley, a completely different bike.

Here's a tip, make 3 cuts not 4. Pry open, remove cats, clamp to close and weld. Make sure your using the proper welding wire, looks like SS.

I am considering this on my 2010 Street Glide that also has a factory 2 into 1 and I am adding the Screaming Eagle Night Stick slip-on and Screamin Eagle air cleaner Using the Screamin Eagle Pro Tuner (Not street tuner) how hard was it to correct the extra flow and exhaust after you flashed the canned map? BTW I love your videos and advise

Hi Jordan, when i did this, i was lucky that the bike came fitted with the huge Vance & Hines Pro Pipe exhaust, and a Pro Tuner setup for that system... I didn't like the look of weight of that exhaust, so did this.. fitted the factory OEM header (2 into 1) pipe... and then added a HD vintage style bottle muffler..... initially It was so choked up i had to deal with it, so made this video to show how to remove the CAT from the header pipe.. then, when it all went back together, it was awesome, better in fact that with the Pro Pipe...it was crisp and urgent, with lots of stomp.. So as long as you do what i did, (set the Pro Tuner to the V&H Pro Pipe setting), it breaths and runs strong and clean all the way through the range up to red line.. no need to mess about flashing and trying to find the right setting.. Hope that helps you out, good luck with it.. Del.

Ok, check out the next video ill load up on this next Wednesday, covers how to cut that down a hell of a lot, and for free.... alternatively, if you have a SE Super Tuner, you could have the bike remapped to run a bit richer.. it'll use more fuel, and wont give more power, but it will pop a little less..... But watch Wednesdays video first, you may like the solution buddy... Ride safe aye.. Del.

You'll need a tuner, like FuelPack, to retune your map which will get rid of your popping.

What did you do after welding and grinding the raw metal? It’s going to rust and Eventually blow through with the hot cold hot cold of an exhaust with raw metal.

(p) Looking forward to the 'pops and crackles' vid as my Kawasaki VN15 with, i think, Vance and Hines exhausts really does pop on the overrun. Nice at first but wearing pretty thin now. But first to fix the leaking head gasket and my first engine removal! How hard can it be?

Hi Harry, the pipe is stainless and if it's not magnetic then it'll be a pretty high grade stainless, so just weld it with stainless MIG wire, job done mate!

Hi Mark, I used just a small home hobby MIG welder for this project, and as the exhaust is stainless steel you'll need stainless steel welding wire too.!

Should be good to go if it was set up right in the first place.. just do a plug check after 20 miles and make sure.!

Hi John, no I used the old ones, they are ok for 3-4 uses, as long as you don't wind the header pipes in too tight on their studs, because there's no need to, they still seal, but of course replace them if they are heavily compacted as they can leak !

Grabbed a second header de-catted from a HD Tech that gets them done, and I can concur, rides much faster and smoother. Throttle response is incredible, and it sounds like a real bike now with the Screaming Eagle Slip on. 2016 FXDL :)

I don't weld, but I got the cat out this weekend, what type of weld do I ask for, any tips or suggestions to the welder. What type of weld TIG v MIG etc .Thank you!!!

Hi Pat, if you're going to a professional welder he will decide for himself, just tell him it's stainless steel sheet metal and as he knows it is an exhaust, obviously, then he knows it'll get hot, the best option would be to TIG weld it, or you could MIG weld it with stainless wire, either way, as long as it's gas tight.

Hi there, I didn't have to do that afterwards, BUT that's because the bike came to me with a Stage1 tune and a Screamin' Eagle ProTuner, which is essential if you are going to remove your cat... hope that helps mate!

I understand people take the cats out because it affects the sound, but I kinda find that for bigger bikes it makes sense. Smaller bikes make alot less pollution than a bigger bike with a bigger engine. Just personal opinion, I love riding, and I love louder exhausts but there are ways to do that by removing baffles or modding the system without taking the cat out :/

Don't ever buy or even follow a classic car or bike will you mate...!! They make more pollution in a mile than a modern bike with no cat makes in a year...! maybe understand a little about emission from engines first aye chap..!

Moonfleet41 Haha i would agree with you but I ride a cbr 400 rr . I just feel that with modern bikes it makes less sense to remove the cats whereas old bikes you can't add one effectively and make them run properly ... also kinda ruins them. Maybe it's hypocritical of me

@skinner back you can actually clean them out and service them reasonably easily. Less time that taking it out and plugging it, just drop it and wash it with pressure and carb cleaner

Yes I would recommend that, not just to correct fueling, but to take advantage of the free-er breathing exhaust, and harvest a little more power...

Hi Aris... ok, this needs visual investigation im afraid, i cant make any form of diagnosis on those symptoms just over email... it needs to be looked at and see if everything is installed correctly first, and from there, determine why its losing power... maybe the best solution for this is to book it in with a competent mechanic and let them take a look... sorry cant be more help... Surely once you have taken it out and then to take it to a dealer to get it remapped then that's going to be expensive. I quite like my Harley when it pops and bangs or as my neighbour puts it, your bikes a one potatoes two potatoe, nope I too didn't understand that comment. Ta ian.

Hi Ian, Of course they purchase of the tuner, and the labour to install it (if you cant do it yourself) will have a cost,... but this at least saves you the cost of buying a straight through exhaust?... that can be £500 / £800 by itself..!! and always get it remapped first, THEN fit the open exhaust... otherwise you're running a factory map on an open exhaust for the ride to the dealer.!!

I just did it on a 22 Road Glide without taking exhaust off the bike. It was very easy no cutting no welding.. I used a quarter-inch drill bit about 18 in Long and a half inch Spade about 18 in Long... The Spade did the most damage to the cat.. Spade work great.. I use the vacuum to suck everything out.... It was a lot easier than I thought. The only difference I noticed so far is more of a pounding sound. Put it this way if if I was in front of your house you would know I'm there..I have not driven the bike yet..

At best you will have taken maybe 50% of the material out, and made a lot more drag and turbulence in the gas flow with the jagged mess that will still inevitably be left behind... but if noise is all you want, then im glad you're happy...! Im sure you're already remapped it, if not, then perhaps at least do a plug chop to check it's not running hot, the M8 motor already runs way too lean.!

What shadowred said... we have neither emission nor decibel tests here for bikes.. but make sure you weld the door up gas tight, because it will fail if it leaks, under the premise of being 'Defective'..!

Once again, if it was my bike, I'd check with the dealer first, if all you were doing was fitting a race can on the back end, then fine, all good, but once you remove the cat, and install a free flow filter, you're opening up the entire breathing characteristics of the motor, and they run lean enough as it is, so it will always benefit from a richer fuel mix. ! Sorry again i can't give you a defined answer buddy, but i wouldn't want to guess and lead you wrong..!

Its not illegal, the bike will produce more carbon monoxide so it more than likely wouldn't pass an emissions test but motorbikes don't have an emissions test as part of an MOT so its not an issue.

No mate, totally legal here.. Like Harry says, we dont have emission tests or Db tests here, so good to go.

Testing times Only if the can is marked 'race use only'; if it is unmarked, BS marked or EC Marked the it will go through an MOT. It all depends on how friendly your local MOT station is of course 😉👍🏻

not to appear too much of a numpty.....but why remove a cat? unless it's clogged with shit and not working?

The cat is quite restrictive so once its removed the exhaust will be much louder and the bike can be tuned to produce more power now that the exhaust gasses are un-restricted.

yeah, there is no emissions or DB test on an MOT so it will still pass.
