Glad I seen this video Del. I am currently restoring my grandfather's '86 Kawasaki GT750 and (being a big fan of Simoniz sprays) I bought this very stuff to repaint the engine. The aluminium units were black when they left the factory and was hoping this paint would match it nicely without being too glossy. But now I think it may be too flat without using your technique of giving it a slight shine. May have to have a rethink. I have also considered just stripping the engine of it's old flakey factory paint and polishing it up but I'd prefer to keep as original as possible to honor my grandfather.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, The VHT paint does dry a little flat, and yeah, once it's cured fully you can buff it a little to bring some mild reflection to it... but TBH if it's just for the engine casings, i use the regular "Tough Paint" products, they're more then heat resistant enough for the casings, should withstand up to 300c without discolouring.. so then you could use their "Satin Black" which would give a really close match to the factory finish !

(P) great vid and liking the idea re: the headlight. I always get blown away by the clock time lapse shot for the flashing off time... They show just how much spray is in the air then how much clearer the air is after 15 mins you can see the clock so much clearer 👍
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 жыл бұрын
Sure thing buddy, the camera is about 15ft away from the clock, but zoomed in, so it does show how much overspray is in the air at the end of each coat across the whole area of the garage.. which is why I've now taken to covering the bike up and a good job too, as the cover had a layer of black dust on it!

Hi, Del! I'm glad to see my plate every time I look at your videos (65PP) :) Love to see how dedicated you are and it really pays off. Furthermore I have a quite huge issue I was hoping to get your advice on. Last winter I took my XJR1200 engine off and had it sodaplasted and painted. The paint job was made by a friend who usually paints car and motorcycle body parts not engines. He used a two-compound heat resistant paint with hardener and did 3-4 coats with spray gun. It looked great, but started to peal off almost immediately everywhere. He said the surface was too smooth and I should have sandblasted not sodaplasted it. :/ This year I have to do it all again. I made a big and expansive mistake that I don't want to make again. At least he told me I can use his dust free and heated garage (I have max 10 degrees in mine). So I have heard that those VHT paints are really good for engine painting and simple to use even for a beginner. There are also two different ones "VHT Engine Enamel" and "VHT FLAMEPROOF", both are about 25€ a can - recommendations? Where do You but VHT paints from? Should I sandblast and just go for it with VHT engine paint or do I need to prep the engine also with decreaser and maybe some kind of acid primer for aluminum? Glad for any advice. Timo.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 жыл бұрын
Ayup Timo, good to hear from you mate... ok, the problem with your pevious paint job was more likely chemical residues and not a lack of a rough surface... soda blasting does leave a residue behind which needs to be cleaned again with neat thinners in to every tiny corner and crevice because it leaves a slightly oily residue behind otherwise.... anyway, moving forward, it's less complicated than you think. You don't need a primer, just use regular VHT paint rated to 800c, that will be fine... if you scuff off every tiny bit of loose paint, scuff up the surface of any of the existing paint left behind and get the whole engine sanded back with Scotch pads, it's boring, tedious and finger tip punshing work... fold the Scotch pad in half to get in between the fins and the longer you spend on it, the better chance you will give the new paint...once it's all scuffed and sanded with nothing loose or flaky, then it's time to clean it. Use paint thinners and clean paper tissue with rubber gloves on (don't touch it with bare fingers, skin is always greasy!)... once everything is perfectly clean, you need a room temperature environment and get a very light 'dust coat' over all of it. This is often known as a tack coat and acts as a primer to the bare metal... if you really wanna be sure, then after 5mins do a second tack coat and leave it 10mins, this will give you a great base. Then you can start painting for real... 3 wet coats of the VHT at least, making sure it's wet and shiny, but try and avoid runs on flat areas, like the clutch cover... then leave it at least 10hrs before you touch it.... That should do you mate... it works for me, and should be a good, sound long lasting finish... Finally mate, always avoid using any form of acid etch primer, unless it is on totally bare metal.. if you spary it on to any leftover paint it will strip it and I imagine your engine is patchy with some bare metal and some old paint, so the double tack coat method is the best primer ever... as a rule of thumb, your two key secrets are to get it totally chemically clean and roughed up, and a nice warm environment...good luck, all the best, Del

Nice one mate, sounds like an adventure, good luck with it... if you're interested at all then there is a much more affordable version of a lift, Sealey make a metal fold away table that can hold 300kgs, gets the bike 2ft6" off the floor, so you can sit on a stool and have the engine at chest height, folds away the size of a sack truck up against the wall..! Let me know if you're interested, can pop you a link...

Love your videos helped me a lot when I did my raw exhaust covers before. Did have a question My new Vance & Hines exhaust covers were already factory painted before I got them but they got scratched when I slid my bike. Do I have to sand down the existing color on befor I spray the vht ? Or can I just spray after throughly cleaning the covers. Any help would be appreciated Ty
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 2 жыл бұрын
If you have some scuffs in the paint, then i would always sand those back to flatten out any imperfections, then key up the rest of the paint for a good key with the new VHT paint.. Thank you for your kind words and we're glad the videos can help.

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can spray on to chrome, but it's important with the heat paint to scuff it up first and make a good 'key' for the paint to grip.

I’m getting ready to paint my exhaust, do I need to sand or scuff up the chrome to get the paint to stick ?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the paint you're using, read the directions on that product, heat proof paints usually don't need a primer, but it's a good idea to 'scuff' them up to provide a key.

Awesome... this may be a stupid question but any need for clear coats to finish? specifically for high heat exhaust paint that is. I know with body work you would do several coats of clear but is that not needed if you doing high heat for exhaust type applications??
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lucas, good question mate, and an important matter... the answer is no, you don't clear coat high temp. paints, usually if you want a gloss finish you buy a gloss high temp. paint... anything you put on an exhaust would have to be high temp. resistant, otherwise it would burn off, naturally. The reason clear coats are put on to body paints is to enhance the metallic effect in the base paint.

What did you use to sand them with and what grit? I'm thinking mmm about doing same to my exhausts and heat shields. How long did you let them cure before reassembly? How do they look now a year later? Kind regards
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, I scuffed the metal with a 120 grit Scotchpad disc to give a little key, drying time (different from curing) was about 48hrs and you can 'carefully' put them back on. Then when you start the bike, they cure within about an hour of riding, be careful because the first thing that happens within the first minute is the paint goes soft and sticky, but then it dries away and starts to 'bake'... once it's fully cured after a few rides, it's tough as powder coat!
