Anna, I found your videos about a month ago, and have watched a good number of them. Just wanted to point out that mangú and mofongo do not have corn in them. Mangú is, basically, mashed boiled plantains with some sort of grease added for extra moisture. It can be oil or butter, some people put some grated cheese in it. Mofongo is made with baked or fried plantains, to which raw garlic is added, it is accompanied with a garlic base broth that should be used to keep the mofongo moist, and with some sort of protein, usually pork rinds.

Seeing both of you guys delighted with out food put a huge smile in my face. La bandera o arroz, habichuelas y carne is literally what’s eaten everyday for lunch. I believe what makes Dominican food special is the seasoning and the care put on the kitchen with every dish. There’s still many things unique to the island you need to try: habichuelas con dulce, arepas dominicanas with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee, berenjenas guisadas, Dominican cake (any cake made in the country), tres leche, batida de lechosa, batida de zapote, mondongo, chivo, guandules guisados con coco, bacalao guisado, bistec encebollado, domplin de San Cristobal, cerdo asado, lechón, chivo, rabo, dulces dominicanos…. Well that was a lot. Keep enjoying it!

I enjoy your videos, it really makes me miss my country even more since I don’t live in the island anymore. You guys should check out the mountains. The towns of Villa Pajon, Jarabacoa, or and Sajoma/San Jose de las Matas. Those towns are beautiful with spring weather, something at night even close to freezing weather. Thanks for sharing so many positive things about my country.
@ToroBravo-qu7ed2 жыл бұрын
Something most dominicans dont seem to understand is that people that come from cold places like Canada, Russia or any part of Europe are not interested in the mountainous parts of DR, because they're running away from cold weather, so im not gonna come from, say, Russia all the way to the caribbean only to encounter cold weather and pine trees. Places like jarabacoa and Constanza might be exotic for us dominicans, but for europeans and canadians, it's boring, lame and a waste of time. There's a reason why 90% of tourist activity in DR is concentrated in the prestine tropical beaches of Punta Cana, the beautiful scenery of Puerto Plata and the lush jungles of Samana. Who wants to see a bunch of boring old pine trees coming from a place like Canada. Its like a dominican from Punta Cana travelling to the US only to take a dip in the beaches of Florida, which are beautiful, but nothing compared to dominican beaches.

Hello from the big apple. That dish called mangu in the Dominican Republic is made of green plantain which are peeled and cooked in salted water to taste, reserve a little of the water in which the green plantain was cooked, then do the same as if you were making mashed potatoes.Add butter if you like or you can do what many Dominicans do, we fry in a little olive oil, chopped red onion, add lemon juice or sour orange to the onion and salt to taste and and mix with the green plantain puree.In Cuba they call it FuFu as well as in some African countries where it comes from.

Nice video! If you haven’t done yet, I would suggest you guys try a VERY dominican sweet dish called “Habichuelas con Dulce” (Sweet Red Beans). This is usually eaten during Easter but you could probably find it year-round. It’s made with red kidney beans, milk (usually a combination of cow and coconut milks), sugar, cinnamon, gloves and sweet potatoes (not the orange kind but the local “batata”), and some people also add to it raisins. Some people also like to eat their “Habichuelas con Dulce” with toasted “Casabe” (which is also a very typical type of Dominican yucca toast like bread). This sweet beans (I love them) can be eaten hot, cold or room temperature. If you like yucca, there are some very typical dominican fried empanadas made with a yucca “dough” (made also with different savory fillings) called “Catibias”. Bon appetite!

The mangu has a story behind. 1916 during the American intervention, Americans tried mangu for the first time and one them just said Man it’s good, so the locals abbreviated it into the Spanish version and started calling it mangu. 😆
