This is very helpful. I was almost finished upgrading to an SSD but didn't see step 5:08 and had to disassemble again. Dell is really a pain when it comes to upgrading to SSDs. So many steps just to get at the hard disk.

Best video on this procedure I’ve seen! …then it cuts off where you get to the system setup or whatever. Where’s that at? Great camera angle. Perfect lighting. No jibber jabber. I installed an SSD into a PlayStation 4 pro, but I’m no techie. Just an old shade tree mechanic. But I have this laptop and it needs to be refreshed and ramped up a bit. So thank you for this great video.

Thank you for the comment! I entered into the laptop's BIOS. If you need to access BIOS/UEFI press the F2 key several times at the Dell logo screen during startup. Or, press the F12 key several times at the Dell logo screen during startup and select BIOS Setup or System Setup from the menu.

Thank you for this! I just swapped out my HDD for a SSD and upgraded the memory. What a difference! I have a question. I tried upgrading the network card like you did, but it didn't work for me. I tried searching for drivers for the card and came up empty. Did the laptop in the video only support 2.4 GHz?

I'm happy to help! it depends on the model. Some laptops have whitelist for WiFi adapter cards so you can use only specific models of wireless adapters. What's the model of your laptop?

@The MellowCade That refers only to old laptops with PCIe slot. All modern laptops with M.2 slot usually don't have any compatibility issues.

This particular laptop doesn't have dedicated graphics only integrated. So you can play only with minimum settings.

You,re welcome! You can't physically add a second drive to that laptop. There's only one SATA connector for a 2.5" HDD/SSD and there's no an M.2 slot for NVMe or NGFF SSD.

I did add ssd and hdd. I only used a caddy and replaced the dvd so that I can have an ssd and hdd at the same time. I also have a question though. Is it possible to upgrade the cpu of the laptop? I know the graphics card cannot be upgraded but how about cpu? Thank you very much!

In the latest laptops models you can't upgrade WiFi cards anymore. They are soldered to the board. So RAM and SSD are the only options you got.

That CPU is not user upgradable! It's soldered to the motherboard and you need an infrared rework station to replace it.

No, there's only one SATA port for a 2.5" HDD/SSD. If your model came with an optical drive then you can replace it with an adapter in which you can install second SATA SSD/HDD.

There's only one slot for 2.5" SSD/HDD but you can install another HDD/SSD instead of optical disc drive. There are special adapters to do that: ali.pub/67nuc7

Technically it's possible but the CPU is soldered to the motherboard so you need a soldering equipment to do that job. Or you can go to a repair shop and ask them to replace the CPU.

Your laptop officially supports maximum 8GB DDR3L-1600 RAM. Your best option is 2 modules by 4Gb. And of course after upgrading your laptop to SSD and 8Gb of RAM, it will be completely different laptop. It really worth it.

I ordered the Intel 9260 wifi card for my Dell Inspiron 15 3573 and I am not able to get the laptop to detect the wifi but it works with the bluetooth just fine. I put the card in another laptop and it works fine so I know the card is ok. Any tips on how you got the 9260 card to work in this laptop?

When you go to Device manager can you see new unrecognized device or something like that? Also try to update your BIOS to the latest version and try to install Intel's drivers for that adapter.

@@ElectronicsComputers no it doesn't show up in device manager at all. I have an Intel 8265 and it does the same thing, Bluetooth and no wifi. Bios is on 1.8.0 which is the latest. When I swap the factory card back in it works every time. I work in IT so I'm not new to this stuff but I just can't figure out why this isn't being detected.

There's only one memory slot so you can get only 8Gb of RAM. You can use any SATA SSD. I recommend using Samsung SSDs.

It's totally normal, if you disconnect the battery the BIOS settings will be set to the default and it will also reset the time.

This got really big Btw I have another laptop whose specs I'm not much confirmed about.. It's a "Lenovo U41-70" Both of these r mine and I just need the data of the lenovo laptop and I can use it as a experimental laptop to test things on... Back story: it had a broken hinge so we send it to a technician and he couldn't fix it (at that time I didn't knew how easy it was to fix hinges) and when the laptop came to us it couldn't perform graphic intensive tasks I didn't play much games during that time but when whenever I did the screen would flickker like small black moving rectangles would pop up and start flickering crazily... (He probably did some stuff...) Any suggestions for this laptop or do I keep it for experimental purposes Thank for reading and answering Really appreciate your time u took to help me

First of all, I have to say that only the drive, RAM, and wireless card can be replaced in that model. The CPU is soldered to the board, and you need an infrared rework station to replace it. It's an extremely complex process, and considering the price of a new CPU, it will cost more than that laptop. 8GB RAM is the maximum supported by that model. The SSD model that you provided is a pretty good option. Go with it. You'll definitely notice the difference in performance; it will be like a brand new laptop. Just set virtual RAM memory to something around 16GB. I have a video about upgrading old laptops' RAM vs SSD and how to set virtual RAM, or you can simply Google it. The easiest way to transfer your data is via a USB drive, then clean install Windows on a new SSD, and finally copy your data back from the USB drive. You can also clone your old system into the new SSD, but performance-wise, it's not the best option to clone the old system from HDD to a USB. As for the Lenovo, I'd first reset the BIOS to defaults, reinstall Windows, and then install fresh drivers and BIOS firmware. Most likely, it will fix the problem.

Yes, there are some special adapters that you put insted of your optical drive and you get 2 SATA ports, so you can use both SSD and HDD at the same time. If you want I could give you the link.

8GB of RAM will make it more comfortable and if you replace your HDD with an SSD drive you'll definitely notice the difference. But if you can buy a new laptop then I don't recommend upgrading it.

Technically you can replace CPU but you need a soldering station and a whole bunch of staff including proper skills to do that. CPUs are not user replaceable anymore like it was 10 years ago.

Sure! HDD will definitely work but RAM depends on the model. If it's same RAM generation, then no problems.

Thanks for the video! This helped me upgrade my Father-In-Law’s HDD to an SSD and now the laptop is about 25-50X quicker to boot and load. And it doesn’t get bogged down anymore with 100% Disk usages for half and hour… 😂

@@rafapetrosalsa If your model comes with an optical drive then you can buy an adapter that allows you to install second drive instead of ODD. Otherwise, it's impossible because there's not enough room for two drives.

That was just another customer's laptop with a typical upgrade that we do on a regular basis. I didn't check the speed but it's like 3-4 times faster than HDD.

That laptop requires DDR4 RAM module. DDR3 is for old laptops which were manufactured 10 years ago. Return that RAM module and buy a new one.

Why not if you can get it for free. Also, Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. Which means no safety against viruses and other threats. I like Windows 11, it's a very customizable and feature rich OS.
