It is very easy to let your old laptop run faster by switching the HDD to an SSD, and install more RAM if there is slot available.
SSD for this laptop: Samsung 860 evo for most people, around $80 (as on 10/30/19)

Hi! I might be late but i had the same problem as yours... For me it was the GPU, mine was burnt (overheat because my fan didnt work properly)...so I only installed the latest graphic driver for the intel instead...and it worked with a not-bad resolution Fyi mine was i3 gen 2 + amd gpu

First thing I would check is the drive, make sure that's bootable. If that doesn't work, check the memory

Hi there, if you are planning to get a 256 GB SSD, basically any 2.5" drive should work. I currently have a Sandisk 240GB SSD and it works perfectly. Here is the link to the SSD. amzn.to/2xZPJ0H. Also, if you are thinking about adding a 64GB as a boot up drive, you can replace CD driver with a caddy adapter. There is no room on the motherboard for another one 2.5" drive and because this is a rather old model there is no M.2 SSD slot.

maximum 8GB+8GB DDR3-1333 (1.5v), optimal 4GB+4GB, 2GB+8GB. The memory module 8GB must have 8 chips on one side (16 chips on both sides). Do not buy a module with 4 chips. Windows 10 can be installed. You can use drivers from Windows 7 or 8. What processor do you have?

As the CPU is BGA l, it is soldered to the motherboard. You technically can upgrade, but the process involves desoldering the current CPU and resolder a new one to the motherboard. Depend on the configuration you bought, there might be one free ram slot for DDR 3, there are two ram slots in total.

So any SATA 2.5" SSD will work. I recommend the Samsung 860 EVO for now since there is a good deal on the 500 GB one. If you want to upgrade the ram, DDR3 1333 SODIMM works for the machine. There are two ram slots on the motherboard, and one is occupied by the factory memory.

It's probably because you are still using HDD. An SSD will shorten your boot time significantly.

@@ateksoluciones8066 The capacity of the hard drive really depends on the system you are running, I saw you have 8GB of ram installed and I assume that you have a 64 bit system. So the current consumer models (like samsung 860 EVO can have up to 4TB) should work for the upgrade without any problem.

I used normal DDR 3 for this upgrade, which means that supports 1.5v ram. I believe you can use ddr3l on this as well and 16 GB should be fine

Sorry, I am not very familiar with Optane. To my knowledge, Optane is used to accelerate the HDD, and often times it uses a M.2 port which this laptop does not have

I'm not sure about the maximum frequency, but 1333 works. If you bought higher frequency ram than the laptop supports, it probably going to run at a lower frequency. For the CPU, I'm working on a video as things are complicated

So you still can install a Windows 10 in this laptop , although Dell saying that in their Website this laptop doesn't tested in Windows 10 yet. Do you have any Issues when installing windows 10 in this laptop ?

I installed Windows 10 64bit on it and there's no problem with it after one year.

Bro, in my laptop I put 4gb ram in one slot and 2 gb in other slot but in PC properties it’s showing only 3.7gb only usable,why its showing like that?

I think you need to install windows 64bit to got all of your ram speed ... maybe your Graphic card take a little from your RAM ... wish it helps you 👍🏻

yeah, pretty much. But the hard drive for m5040 is located on the right-hand side. Other than that the process should be pretty similar. Hope it helps

@@quigon07 A 64-bit system can support more than 4 gb of ram, if you go with 8gb per ram slot you can get up to 16gb of ram, most of today's CPU support 64 bit system

If I remember this correctly, N4050 supports memories up to 1333Mhz, and the ones you have seems to be a 1600Mhz RAM

If you are using a Samsung drive, the Samsung migration tool can make a copy of your system to a new hard drive, so everything you have will be the exact same on the new hard drive.

If you are watching this, I guess your laptop is around 5 years old. You could reapply thermal past. The past could be dry after 5 years and does not conduct heat as well as new ones.

Yes! The i5 compatible to the N4050 is called i5-2450M. If you don't know much about computers, or don't feel secure in replacing the CPU yourself, ask for a people with that knowledge or bring that on a support center so they can replace for you. Plus, that processor is old as the core i3-2350M, but it's price is fine.

@@diegoaleman9844 Just a quick advise, once this processor may be more powerful, be sure to have a good cool-down system and also a charger wich can provide enough power to your laptop. I have my N4050 Since 2012, works until now days and i'm going to upgrade that too so it may last more 8 great years. And Your Welcome!

@@diegoaleman9844 With 8GB, a Intel Core i5 2450M and a SSD, this old one shall be as powerfull as a basic gaming laptop. Sadly my DIMM A Slot isnt working, when i put any RAM Stick in there, the system doesn't turn on, maybe is it damaged, so i'll look for a 8GB Stick. Eidt: Also, about the quantty of RAM, well, Dell suports / assure it is 8GB, but the motherboard itself may be able to handle 16GB, just don't go above that value.

This motherboard supports 16Gb of Ram, but for that you'll need two 8GHB 1333MHz DDR3 1.5v RAM memories, once this computer only provide 2 slots.

francis avenido IDK the compatibility of the RAM that you are adding in, in most of the case, there will be no problem for the sodimm ddr3 1333mhz ram

If yours only have the HD Graphics, you could theorically buy the n4050 board wich has the discrete graphics, but I warn you, it would probably not be worth it.

That usually take some force to do. Every machine will have different latching forces. Just be careful when you are doing that. There are also some tools from iFixit that claims they will break before your device does.
