When this came out I was so excited because I thought it was gonna be a success story about her six years of sobriety, but oh my god if this really is about the present (and tbh I think it is. Her Twitter description of this song is "my truth"), my heart goes out to her. I've listened to this song about 10 times and my heart is still breaking.

Wishing her the best. Sober is the realest song (besides ‘Father’) she’s released in her entire career. Is her truth... She’s not sober, but she wants to be sober.

It was so sad when she said that this “is this about the past” because she was worried about Demi, but later in the year Demi was in the hospital because of an overdose, and in 2020 Demi dropped anyone which was written just about a day before the overdose. The only revelation in this song is the possibility of it pertaining to her current life. Also... if it was about her past, she'd never drop this song - knowing the reaction it would receive - without clarifying that it's about her past. The last thing she'd want is to be faced with accusations of her relapse if it wasn't true, but it's in her nature to jump ahead of the tabloids & beat them to the truth. She was very quick to explain the purpose behind Old Ways & YDDIFMA. She didn't want any misconceptions, yet she's silent since the release of Sober... I wish her the best, & I appreciate her bravery for telling us the truth.
