The Red Bead Experiment is the highlight of Deming's four-day seminar. Executives attending the seminar often identified the Red Bead experiment as having the most profound effect on changing how they think about managing and viewing their workers. The demonstration is deceptively simple while providing many powerful messages. This illuminating DVD shows Dr. Deming presenting his famous Red Beads Experiment. Dr. Deming acts as the production foreman and asks for volunteers from the audience to serve as his willing workers to assist him perform the experiment.

Agree on the 36:11 to the 36:38 mark. Ownership and management should play this over and over and over in their heads...so profound.

A great illustration of how a system, that is a standardised process, to extract white beads from a reservoir of mixed red and white beads determines the performance of the workers. The workers do their best, even to the extent of cheating by attempting bribery, to do a good job. They fail, because of the system. Management could and should encourage workers to collaborate in redesigning the system. Improved quality and profitability would follow a better system. If you’re watching this video you probably suspect that this is true. For more, read Deming’s ‘out of the crisis’. John Seddon in the UK has much to say too.

Rewarding and punishing employees based on performance from a system will fail you every time. Until you figure our how to improve the process, the workers cannot be held accountable to anything outside of their control.
