These systems are great in traffic. I used the one in our Acura RDX for 30 miles of Long Island rush hour traffic today. Most of these systems are not that aggressive with sharp turns. They always let go at the worse time. The one exception I’ve seen is BMW’s. BMW’s system will seemingly keep you centered on a race track. Last, they need to get smarter with highway Lane changes. They tend to slow down as you are changing lanes and they need better algorithms to deal with drivers that cut in front of you. Although, I’ve had 3 of these systems starting in a 2013 vehicle. They’ve all gotten smarter with each version.

I believe Genesis now has the HDA2 systems that can do auto lane change. I've noticed that my new Palisade will (sometimes) start accelerating as soon as I put the turn signal on to overtake a car in front of me, on the highway, if I was following a car that was going below my set speed. Though, sometimes it hits the brakes at just the wrong time right when I make my lane change, which I have to assume pisses off anyone coming up quickly behind me. So usually, I just wait until there isn't anyone very close coming up in the left lane, before I do an overtake. Otherwise, I cancel the system, do it manually, and then restart the system after I'm back in the right lane. I just went to a 2022 Hyundai from a 2010 BMW that didn't have any smart cruise or lane keep assist. 12 years of technological advancement really makes a difference! I'm really hoping level 4 is reliable and relatively cheap by the time I need to buy another car, in probably another decade from now, lol.

I remember the first time I experience this, I was driving my wife's 2020 Toyora Corolla LE. I was curious what was that button is all about, turned it on and then bang! Like a magic! So surprised that a basic car with this kind of driving assist technologies - its like the future I always dreamed of when I was a kid. So relaxing and makes you feel safer. I find it difficult to drive a "regular" car now. I'm driving a Hyundai now which in my opinion has a better system than the Toyota's.

Great review! The majority of reviews for Hyundai/Kia’s highway driving assist have been very positive. Save for one or two reviewers-who I’m starting to believe don’t have it enabled to “active”-I think it’s one of the best. It’s become more advanced than on my 2019 Kia Optima, but the system is really good on that as well.

I don't have the adaptive cruise control, but I have the Lane Follow Assist and I've let it pull me through S-Curves in my Sportage showing it off. I think the best thing about it is how much it reduces fatigue in my arms after long drives. Then - TaDa! - you post this video. Maybe you could demonstrate how these features work on other cars you review. That would be very interesting. You should trust the car some more. I drive a Hyundai Kona from 2019 and it can handle much harder bends then the ones you felt that you had to intervene in. You always have to be ready to grab the wheel because it can fail at the last moment, but here it seemed you grabbed the wheel because that.

being a retired computer geek, I put my Hyundai Sonata and my Hyundai Santa Fe under a stress test while driving segments of the Blue Ridge Parkway. What I discovered is that on "S" curves the sensors and/or computer are not fast enough to deal with the second part of an "S" curve while driving at the parkway's 45 mph speed limit. More sensitive detectors and more powerful computer chips could detect the second part of compound curse, but would cost more money. My company developed marine navigation software that included routines to engage the autopilot to follow a designated route. Over the next several years I discovered that our routines were becoming more accurate because the computing power had made huge jumps in power.

Actually HDA does not "read" road signs. Rather, the roads are GPS mapped, and it gets the speed limit of a particular road from mapped data.
@lloyd7962
@lloyd7962 11 ай бұрын
Does not change the speed automatically unless you are in an area that is mapped specifically for HDA. (displayed speed must be green with HDA illuminated) In most cases, when it "sees" the change in the speed limit, it does exactly what you saw. It indicates an arrow up or down for the change. You must acknowledge that change manually.

Definitely a cool feature but with its downsides, I’m not sure I would totally trust it. A driver still has to pay attention. The only thing it really seems to do is allow a driver to keep foot off accelerator & brake and encourage already easily distracted drivers to think they can more safely text etc and drive. One still needs to be ready at a moments notice to act! I’ll be trying it out though finally, on my new Tucson, during a 320 mile drive just before July 4th.
@Coffeedad
@Coffeedad Жыл бұрын
So how did it work for you?
@jburns47
@jburns47 Жыл бұрын
@@Coffeedad worked amazingly well! The distance setting needs to be adjusted to suit you. It offers four settings. I’m most comfortable with the longest distance setting. If you come up on slower traffic ahead, it automatically slows you down to match their speed. If you change lanes to pass, it picks up the speed again. Haven’t tried the heavy traffic version. Probably never will. If I were a driving commuter though, I can see how it could be very useful. Pretty great tech. I’ve started using it regularly on long, fast moving long stretches of highway in clear weather. As noted before, I still would never trust it with my life, that is, even keeping my hands lightly on the steering wheel and foot off accelerator and brake, I wouldn’t not pay attention. Too many unexpected random things have happened to me over the years such as spare tires and other items coming off vehicles in front of me and requiring intensely fast reaction and random weavers, lane changers, etc.

Not bad, but it would have been nice if throughout the video you didn't have the instrument cluster screen on the useless "attention level" display. You changed it away from the informative driving assist display at 0:35 which shows a car and colored lane graphics. Judging from the tiny text we can see on the screen, HDA was not active on the two-lane road you picked. If it was, the lane lines (which we couldn't see) would be green and the green HDA icon would be shown. You should try re-testing it on a two-lane US highway (not a city street or state highway).

I have noticed more and more an aggravating by product of adaptive cruise control lately. I will be cruising along when for no apparent reason the brake lights on a vehicle ahead come on, I think “why is this dude braking all the damned time” so eventually get fed up and pass him, next thing I know he is accelerating with me! Mixing adaptive with fixed cruise controls and people not fully understanding what their cars are doing makes long trips stressful sometimes.

From what I’ve found it won’t. I have a 23 Carnival. I thought the “offset” setting would do just that. Thought if I set the offset to +5 mph it would adjust to posted speed limit plus 5mph. That doesn’t appear to be the case. The offset seems to be for the ISLA visual and audio warning but it will not adjust the speed automatically. The automatic speed limit adjust seems to only happen when you set the speed at the exact speed limit. From there it will adjust up and down to the actual speed limit, but not +5. See at 4:00 in the video, the car does not adjust the speed based on speed limit because he has the speed set above the limit, it just gives a warning prompting him to change speed, which he does with the button on steering wheel. I’m really trying to learn these features which is how I found this video. I’ve read and re-read the manual. I’ve watched the Kia videos. It’s still confusing. I’m getting ready for road trip number 2 and will see if anything become more clear.
