After his surprise win in 2016, a narrative emerged about Donald Trump’s coalition: He had charted a new path for Republicans, finally winning over working-class people. In reality, Trump lost working-class voters - by double digits.
The reality of the working-class voting patterns has always been more complicated than the media has made it out to be. After 2020, it became even more so. While Trump again lost working-class people generally, the GOP made big gains with one particular portion of the working class: Latino/Hispanic voters without college degrees. At the same time, wealthier white people continued to move toward Democrats. Ahead of the 2022 midterms, indications are that that gap is here to stay. Collectively, that realignment could scramble the parties’ coalitions and very identities - and pose a threat to Democrats for years to come.
