@@k.delpino1124he's not the writer though. Sandra Bullock was asked about them and she said they're a bidet. Stallone asked about them during the filming, and the writers gave him an explanation which he repeated to an interviewer as follows: "OK, this may be bordering on the grotesque, but the way it was explained to me by the writer is you hold two seashells like chopsticks, pull gently and scrape what’s left with the third. You asked for it…. Be careful what you ask for, sorry.” The writers were messing with all of them because they deliberately didn't fashion an actual functioning way to use the shells. They've explained the inspiration and said they wanted to make something that sounded completely absurd to our TP-using selves. It's a deliberate mystery with no definitive answer. And that's what makes it good.

Fun Fact: He actually quit his Major League role to film Passenger 57 to which the writers responded by recasting his character Willie Mays Hays with Omar Epps. As an added way to throw shade at Wesley Snipes, they had his character parodied(for lack of a better term) as a wannabe action star on the side of his baseball career where his character co-stars with the actual Jesse Ventura in a overly cheesy action movie. Seeing Jesse Ventura in this movie reminded me of that interesting bit of useless knowledge lol.

The 3 seashells came about because the screenwriter (Daniel Waters) wanted there to be something futuristic about the bathroom. He couldn't come up with an idea so he called a friend to ask for one. The friend had decorative seashells in his bathroom and thus the 3 seashells were born. Stallone has said he was told by one of the writers that shells 1 & 2 are used like chop sticks to pull out the poop. Shell 3 is used to scrape out the excess. This is the closest to an official answer.

The Running Man is another great film as well. I remember as a child watching a tape that my mum recorded of a really wholesome short kids film but when winding through the tape I discovered that the Running Man was fully recorded on the VHS. So I watched that instead, can't recall if Running Man was taped over the kids film maybe that's why it was short but I love Running Man and felt like you discovered something you were not meant to watch. My mum is a child/teen of the 80s so I grew up on those films so along with Demolition Man this is where my love of 80s action films came from.

Screenwriter Daniel Waters got the idea of Demolition Man from watching films like THE TERMINATOR and Lethal Weapon and blended the two together, but instead of using time travel, he thought the hero and the villain should be cryogenically frozen and wake up 100 years in the future where crime is outlawed and when these two face off, the future isn't big enough for the both of them.

The line by Spartan, "is it cold in here or is it just me?" that you were talking about being "an Arnold line," when it was said at 51:47, wasn't a reference to Arnold but was a call back to the beginning of the movie where Simon said it at 4:09. He said it just before he threw his cigarette to light the gas to blow up the building.

Although I must say that I do really appreciate the thought they put into the process of securing and rehabilitating prisoners in this time. Because the technology is something that scientists have been trying to figure out for years now. Hibernation like that over extended period of time without causing the subject to age or have to expend or consume calories to maintain their life processes have been something scientists been trying to figure out for a while now to use mostly in future deep space travel

That's cool. The problem I see with hibernation like in this film and Alien is your muscles. They can atrophy just from being in bed for a few weeks. After months or years of being asleep with no activity, you'd be too weak to move if not permanently disabled. Your body can even stop breathing because it's so weak. It makes me think we'll never be able to survive a trip to Mars. Astronauts would be physically helpless by the time they got there.
@psycho42069
@psycho42069 8 ай бұрын
@@rscott7651It doesn't take that long to get to Mars. Less than a year. Astronauts heading there would do exactly like they do on the Space station, exercise with resistance bands and treadmills/stationery bikes etc. One movie that shows a good example of how they would stay in shape is The Martian.
@rscott7651
@rscott7651 8 ай бұрын
@@psycho42069 I don't think anyone in real life can say exactly how long it will take to travel to Mars, especially when you factor in anything that can go wrong like health issues among the crew. I was talking about long term hibernation though. The idea of waking up and just moving around like normal is unrealistic. Atrophy can affect people differently, but your body deteriorates from inactivity. I've spent a good amount of time in a hospital bed, and I pretty much had to learn how to walk again. My legs were like jelly. And I wasn't asleep in zero gravity for months. Hibernation would only work if there was already a hospital on Mars where astronauts could rehabilitate when they get there. They'll be alone and sickly.
@psycho42069
@psycho42069 8 ай бұрын
@@rscott7651 Your points on hibernation are (or could be) all valid, I'm not arguing with them. The travel time to Mars though is no guess. We've sent many probes, rovers, etc there and we KNOW it takes roughly 8 months to travel to Mars from Earth. There is a window that the planets need to be in the correct alignment, and that window only comes around about every 2.5 years so that's about how often we can send missions to/from Mars, but nobody would need to hibernate for that journey. Like I said, astronauts have spent longer periods on the space station.
@rscott7651
@rscott7651 8 ай бұрын
@@psycho42069 We haven't sent humans though. Living people on board changes everything. Hibernation during the trip to Mars is something I've heard speculation about to lower costs and stress among the crew, I just see a lot of issues with it. Astronauts that spend months on the space station still need medical care afterward. There won't be any on Mars. I don't see them being fit enough to do anything when they get there whether they hibernate or not.

For Coy MDK was reference to M.O.D.O.K. the writers gave a nod to comics since this film is done in a comic matter. A violent supervillian out of time placed in an environment without violence to be stopped by a out of time supercop using violence to catch him. It's a comicbook if I ever heard one.

The locations used in the film were a way the budget was kept relatively low. Oldsmobile also made the concept cars. People say they like practical effects and real locations but then they put them down and joke about them. It is so funny how you didn't know the hot dog jingle was real. Your assessment of the movie coming after "Speed" was completely off. This is the movie that introduced Bullock to most people and then "Speed" really made her well-known. Next, "While You Were Sleeping" turned her into a leading lady and star. In 1993, technology and internet were getting a lot of reporting. AT&T had commercials promising that "you will" do all sorts of things like check out libraries from home and watch movies while on the beach, etc.

For some non-American releases, references to Taco Bell were changed to Pizza Hut since the former was virtually unknown in many foreign countries at the time. This includes both dubbing and changing the logos during post-production. Taco Bell however remains in the closing credits. In both the Dutch and Swedish releases the subtitles still use Taco Bell while the sound and picture have been altered as above. Also, when using closed captioning on cable television, references to Taco Bell are changed to Pizza Hut.
