How to Paint : A Deathwing from the New Leviathan Box!

*Note, I was wrong about the transfers, there are Dark Angel ones in the box!
This video looks at how to paint a Deathwing Terminator from the new Leviathan boxed set, which Games Workshop sent to me as an early review copy.

Games Workshop: Black Templar (Contrast), Darkoath Flesh (Contrast), Contrast Medium, XV-88, Morghast Bone, Ushabti Bone, Screaming Skull, Mephiston Red, Evil Sunz Scarlet, Wild Rider Red, Yriel Yellow

What blows my mind every time is how easy it looks. No crazy tool or technique, just simple brush work, yet the result is stunning.

@@gregorysmillie2008 sure I didn't mean to denigrate his technique, but it's like in sports, professional athletes make it look so easy you can forget how difficult it actually is. Same here, it's impressive because it looks so easy.

"THE RICHARD GRAY SCALE" - Zero (0) to Richard Gray. The scale to judge/ compare all miniatures to. There may be others that meet the "Richard Gray" level but the Richard Gray is definitely the top level. Thanks for sharing all these for how great they are and for your conversation.

You're an inspiration as always. Excellent DW Terminator! I do believe that Leviathan box should come with a transfer sheet that includes some Dark Angel transfers though. I have seen it in the promos.

I don't understand how you manage to blend the colours so smoothly. Every time I try to do anything with ivory/sandy-colour paints it ends up looking super grainy, rough and sudden with every brush stroke clearly visible. And if I think them down it just turns into a tide mark liquid. No such issues with any other colour.

6:52 actually love Black Templar Contrast. It's the one I use the most. Basically an off-black with a green tone. Like to use over my texture paints to create a dark surface amd build up from there.

Other paint jobs have a coloured plastic look, but yours really makes you believe the armour is made out of ceramite.

10:05 About the Metal Color paints. I started to add a drop of Vallejo Metal Varnish to them. What it does it makes them flow a little bit less and also protects the paint a bit since you generally don't varnish metalics after that.

33:50 I have scraped physical texture from a model ones. Had to repaint that part though. Interest to see if you are careful and like you said use sanding paper with a high grit.

It's probably the camera but the XV88 shadows look much cooler on video than than they do irl. Irl they look much warmer.

Hey mate, this looks so awesome, the best i've ever seen ! I wanna replicate this, but dont have an airbrush. Do you think it is possible to do it the same as your other models, with a big dry bursh stipple very thin paint on there to get your highlights in the right place. If so, what primer and what color to stipple with would you recommend ? cheers in advance

Amazing paint job! Question. If I don’t have an airbrush what’s the best way for me to apply the initial basecoats? Prime black, basecoat xv-88 then later up to morghast bone?

Check out colourforge for colourmatched spray cans. Or just use a big fat round drybrush and work up. That's what I do and it works well if you do the damp drybrush technique as favoured by artistopus

is it weird that I'm most impressed by his wet palette? I've tried to pre-thin paints into pools like this before and the paint separates so fast. I'm really curious to know if there's any other additives being used to keep the paint nice and wet at the perfect consistency without ever separating.

My guess is flow improver. It emulsifies things and helps the paint come off the brush by lowering surface tension. You can also use soap.

Richard, what are your rules for when and how much. You edge highlight? This model is amazing and didn’t seem to get much edge highlighting. Is that true? Why? I am a newbie and all I near is edge highlighting helps define the shapes of your miniature. When should I not be as concerned about it?

So today I found out that Richard Gray uses the plastic brush protector cap to keep his paint pots open, the same way I sometimes do. I think I technically just became a better painter? 😶

You touched on this in the video, but I think the majority of us probably will not spend this much time on a single miniature. The result is really beautiful, but if you had to replicate this on an entire army, it would probably take months or years. What I'm really curious about is how a pro painter would approach painting an entire army or squad. What techniques to use, what will achieve the best finish in the shortest amount of time, etc. Would you have any interest in doing something like this? I think that would be a very relatable video, and to me at least, very instructive. Regardless, exceptional video.

I just feel like you are working against the clock with these GW washes. Just use Enamel or oil washes, then you don't have the staining issue. You can remove it as you like.
