I just received one TODAY for FREE For our 17 year old grand daughter. Her name is Megan, & the machine came from Mary Jane. This one is a lovely light green! Mary Jane has passed away, & her son's are cleaning her adorable home. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this video!!! My late mother-in-law would be pleased, too. She taught community ed sewing in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

This model Kenmore was one of the very last of the "All Metal" sewing machines! An excellent machine that will last for decades.

I LOVE these old "Kennies"; I have several. They are dependable, smooth running and easy to use. If you have the right attachments and/or presser feet, the late '60's and 1970's models can do as much as today's modern machines, albeit just not automatically. And if you take good care of them, keeping them clean and lubricated, they'll never give you trouble. As a kid, I had a 158-14000 that I beat the s**t out of (I didn't know any better back then) and like the old Timex commercial, it "kept on tickin'". They are a joy to use.

S G can you please tell me how to,zigzag? I have a similar model and many years ago i thought I just switched from red dot to a numbered width and that switched to zigzag. But I’ve tried ever combination I can think of and it won’t zigzag!

Hi! Has it been a while since you used the machine? It might need oil and/or lube. To rule out a problem with your machine, have you moved the variegator lever to the white dot and tried some of those stitches? Have you changed your stitch width to something wider than 1? 3 or 4 would be a good test. Make sure you have the appropriate foot on your machine so you don't break a needle, and try a white dot zig zag. If this does not work, we'll go to Plan B. Is there a way to reach you 'offline' if we need to talk more in-depth?

I am so happy I have this machine now! Any tips when looking for presser feet? I see many of the snap feet attachments that say they’re not for vintage machines even if they are low shank. I’d love to buy a good variety of snap on feet and have lots to play with!

Hi Deanna, There are many snap-foot adapters available that will work with your machine and allow you to use all kinds of snap-on presser feet. I have one on my 148-14000 and it works perfectly. Visit www.sewingmachinesplus.com and type in "Low Shank 11 Piece Snap-on Foot kit". This kit includes the adapter and some very useful presser feet. You'll receive a blind-hem foot, a button sewing foot, a rolled hem foot, a zipper foot, zig-zag foot and more, plus it costs less than $25.00. It's on sale right now, so don't wait. You can also buy just the adapter if you wish. And if you have any other particular foot in mind such as a pin-tuck or ruffling foot, you'll find them there too. SMP is a VERY reputable dealer in machines and accessories. They even provide compatibility lists so you can be certain what you buy is appropriate for your machine. I buy from them regularly and have never been disappointed or had to send anything back. Buy this kit and you'll be able to use all the snap-on feet your heart desires. Enjoy your "new" Kennie. They are truly wonderful machines and will serve you well.

It's been a few years since you made this video, but I just showed my wife. She bought one yesterday at a flea market with a big box of attachments for $10. Apparently, she got a great deal. It needs a bobbin case, but I've found a bunch online. It costs more than the whole machine. Hahahaha. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much for this video! I grew up in a home where we sewed everything, but after getting married I think I kinda rebelled against "handmade" for a while :( I even sold my machine. Then along come my daughters and they want to learn how to sew! It took me a while, but i finally decided it was time to buy a machine and I found this exact model on a yard sale site on Facebook. Then I got it home and realized I had no idea how to use this particular machine. So i decided to check KZfaq and viola! I came across this video! Thank you so much! We'll be off and running with sewing projects right after Christmas!

Thanks so much for the video, I don't have a manual and my mom gave me this machine, I was going to spend $800+ on a sailrite but I have been sewing canvas for my boat at it's a dream, had to make a little wood bar for the reverse since it was broken. I had no idea what all the features were, it's working so well I just spend $20 on a new reverse switch. It is funny when I walk in the sewing store, I always get great help, just bought fabric for curtains for my sailboat, on to the next project. Steve

Thank you! I have had this machine for 6 years and have only made one project on it because I was scared and had no exprience. My mom and aunt picked it out at a consignment store while on a visit here where I live in WA they are in CA. I come from a lineage of 3 generations of garment makers and didn’t care to learn growing up. I was a total brat and took them for granted. Now as a result of COVID I am learning how to make face coverings and have received good feedback on my masks so far. Any tidbits of information on how to maneuver this machine are very much welcome, so thank you!

Great video! I brought this exact model home today to repair it for a lady member of the church that I attend. Thankfully, the only things that I found wrong was that the bobbin was inserted into the bobbin case with its thread coming off of it in a counter-clockwise direction instead of clockwise, and the presser foot pressure was totally relaxed.

This machine is a vintage? I didn't know that. I have one bought it off a friend when my Singer died because of one little plastic part. I hate plastic! I posted to Facebook about the death of my sewing machine after 25 years of good use and how I wished for an all metal machine. And that is how I got this one. My sewing room is decorated with a vintage theme so hearing this machine is also vintage makes that just perfect.

I think this is more middle 1960's. In the 70's, Kenmore was putting its stitch dials in front on the top facing you, rather than on the left side of the machine. Also, in the 70's plastic was replacing a lot of metal. I had two new 70's Kenmores and loved them. granny albuquerque

Really enjoyed this video. I inherited two sewing machines, one of which is this very model. I have not ever sewed with a sewing machine before but I’d really like to learn how to. Although I must admit that after watching this video I’m a little intimidated. Reason being is that one of the things you did (I think it was during the threading process) was a multi step process that you described as being very basic and being that I was lost after just a few steps then I hear you say how basic this procedure was and I was left thinking: F*ck me, I’ve gotta lot to learn here before I’m gonna be able have any hope of running this thing lol... Again, great video and keep up the good work!

GREAT VIDEO. I have this exact same machine, and it works like a charm. It used to be housed in the wooden stand that you could purchase it with back in the 1970's. We got rid of this wooden cabinet/stand. But now, the machine has a few protruding metal pieces at the bottom (that used to go into the wooden stand in some fashion)... so now it doesn't sit nice and sturdy when placed alone on a table. But I see that you have some sort of matching metal base for it. ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND THIS BASE or this sort of thing for this sewing machine?

Only one thing you got wrong here. The thread does not go through both guides at the needle location, not unless you are using a double needle. Otherwise you thread through the left guide. So the main reason this machine has a second spool pin up top is for double-spool sewing, not for bobbin filling.

I found my mom's 158.7300 Sears Kenmore sewing machine and no manual instructions to follow so I've been watching how to videos, but none had a sewing machine similar to mine, but yours did. My problem is threading a bobbin so that the needle is stopped from going up and down while threading and I tried moving the wheel towards me to initiate the lock but it doesn't move. Is there a different way to lock the needle from moving while I thread a bobbin? I wish I could find a manual, but it appears there aren't any available. Can you help?

Is it necessary to thread that bottom bobbin for the machine to thread or can you just thread the top and it still work?

Late to video. I have this one as a 14001 but pretty much the same but cannot find anyone saying what that silver lever under bobbin case is.

I have an old Kenmore sewing machine I'm learning about and the problem I'm having is what you left out, putting more thread on the bobbing. How to get the spin thread on bobbing to turn on.

I just bought what looks like this same machine on eBay, except it doesn’t have a base like this one does. Is that a problem? Or does it just mean it’s a different model or something? Any info would be appreciated!

The flat side of the needle needs to face the back of the machine.

Thanks for the video. I inherited one of these machines. Everything works fine, except that it only sews a straight stitch, no zigzag or other stitches. As nearly as I can figure out, the problem (or part of it) is in making the stitch wider. Is this likely to be a fixable problem? Is there any way my handy husband can further evaluate this?

Paula Derry did you ever find out how to,zigzag? I have a similar model and many years ago i thought I just switched from red dot to a numbered width and that switched to zigzag. But I’ve tried ever combination I can think of and it won’t zigzag!
