Every story is told based off one idea - not a hundred ideas. As drummers, we have a story to tell. In this lesson, Dave DiCenso talks about taking one idea and diversifying it with multiple creative devices to expand your repertoire, as well as create practical grooves and fills.
Dave DiCenso is a Boston-area drummer whose talent and diverse musicality have scored him a wide range of drumming achievements. Having performed with artists such as Josh Groban, Steve Morse Band, Hiromi, John Petrucci, and Duran Duran, Dave is a widely sought-after player. In addition to his performing abilities, Dave is also a Professor of Percussion at Berklee College of Music.

DD eats, lives and breaths drumming. His expressions are not only real but demonstrate a deep passion for what he's doing. Nothing fake about this guy - even in his early days with TTS, he was always expressive and became one with the music.

It's absolutely hilarious reading the posts/threads about how, in essence a) Dave apparently doesn't show true emotion, like it's all some kind contrived vibe being emitted from his soul, and b) Dave can't keep, or at best, has trouble keeping time. I've seen him play in several configurations, including the Jon Finn Group back in the 90's and in solo clinics over the years. Let me give you MY impression of Dave, as someone who actually knows the man, as opposed to those who think they are somehow blessed with the uncanny ability to read someone, from all of 60 minutes of a KZfaq video: 1. This cat POURS OUT EMOTION from EVERY FIBER OF HIS BEING. I've seen him with buckets of sweat pouring down his face, after giving everything he has during a cut/solo/whatever. 2. This cat absolutely LOVES what he does. He's an extremely accomplished musician whose catalog speaks for itself. Dave's arrival at Berklee as a teacher ushered in the first rock drumming program, at what has traditionally been primarily a Jazz college. 3. In a world of other 'Drumming Gods' being worshiped and compared, in countless and countless other videos where everyone has to speak about how awesome their favorite drummer is, and use that as some sort of platform of mental masturbation with which to denigrate other drummers, Dave is the exact polar opposite of that. Speak to him IN PERSON, about other drummers, and you'll get that from him right out of the gate. He exudes respect for his colleagues and for the art form he's spent his entire life learning. He's about the music, not about music being some sort of sporting event or competition. 4. He keeps amazing time! He is totally jacked into the groove and where the pocket is, whether he's playing outside it or so deep inside it that, if you were to enter it, you'd never be able to escape ;) I've seen/heard him do some of the most amazing things, and I'm like "YES, that grooves so damn hard (like at 1:01:47-1:01:57, and yet it's so tasteful and on point with what the tune/jam is calling for at that moment." 5. He's a good friend and is one of the most approachable and humble cats you'll ever meet. In short: Dave is the real deal. Peace.

Exactly. It's amazing how some of these dolts managed to get it EXACTLY WRONG. If you watched this video and came to the conclusion Dave isn't an expressive pocket player from hell, you're not listening, or you don't have a mind for music. This performance was incredible, and Dave is an absolutely astounding player who can play, and feel, any kind of music he chooses to take on. Not only that, the exercise he was teaching in this video is fantastic, and totally practical/useful.

Dave's musical mind is astonishing. The speed that his mind works is very special. He's such a real cat, man. So advanced. So fluid. So natural. Watch his motions and how his body translates and absorbs his ideas as he executes his ability to make music while telling a story behind the drumkit.

"Every exercise you do should groove." Good advice there. I think sometimes it's easy to tell yourself you're just playing an exercise, so it doesn't matter if it doesn't groove.... but that's not gonna help us learn musicality. Great video Dave + Drumeo.

Dave is amazing, thanks for bringing him! My favourite part was probably his thoughts on how drummers/musicians are storytellers, and how it's much more useful and interesting to have few ideas and explore them in many ways, than to have a ton (two ton :) ) of them. A book or a movie mostly is built off one main idea.
