He’s an ok director. I think he’s very overrated. Especially in todays current climate of cinema. He tends to use a lot of long drawn out shots, that feel like a commercial and his storytelling relies on actors emoting. Lots of style, very little substance. Dune has been the most overrated, boring adaption and really doesn’t capture the essence of the source material. He uses a great cinematographer but the storytelling is lackluster.

There is a small group of people who grew up with this universe. It was like another star wars to me. The 80s movie was a favorite. And the magic of it is that the story has new depths and levels of meaning every time I revisit it. The books show me something fresh every time I read them. I always knew in my mind how epic dune could be. But Denis has surpassed even my imagination. He puts as much care and detail into his work as Frank did.

In the early 1990s, I saw the David Lynch movie before reading the books. Despite its flaws, I was blown away, it was so different from every other SF movie. But, when I read book 1, I was blown away again, it was so much better than even the film, and so different even from all the other hard SF books. I went on to read the rest of the books, but had a mixed view: all the even-numbered ones seemed to be a bit of a mess. After Denis Villeneuve's excellent new adaptation, I started to re-read the books, and I see now that I was a bit immature back in the 1990s and missed some of the subtext.

His vision of Dune is a watered down, trope filled version that doesn’t capture the essence of the source material. He didn’t “take it there” like he could have. It’s very lackluster and disappointing. His reimagined version is more a tune to star wars tropes or other Hollywood rehashes. It’s safe and doesn’t push boundaries. It’s boring sci-fi, doesn’t ask any questions or makes you think. It’s like a video game commercial. These films will be collected but forgotten. Someone will do a better version in 10 years or so that actually dives into the material.

Thank you for that last part! It clears up what's been driving me crazy about how people interpreted it from past interviews. It's not that Denis actively "doesn't want" do more Dune movies after Messiah, it's that he doesn't allow himself to dream more than one ridiculously ambitious complex movie project at a time. Realistically he still likely won't make more Dune movies beyond Messiah (he obviously also wants to see that actually work out well first), but if that's the case, it will be due to all sorts of factors (like whether it would even be greenlit, what other projects would be on Denis' mind, how much potential would a screenplay for it have etc.) as opposed to him "not wanting to" do more Dune movies (because he is a fan of all 6 of Frank Herbert's Dune novels). It's a subtle distinction, but a distinction nonetheless. But then the fact that you got him to also contemplate the hypothetical of another filmmaker continuing with the series and himself implying that he'd be very involved in the process, is a cherry on top.

I just remembered an interview with Villeneuve back in 2017, just before '2049' came out, and he mentioned that his dream project would be to make 'Dune', but he didn't think he'd ever be able to get the rights. I know he's talked about doing a version of 'Cleopatra', and I think he should pursue a variety of narrative genre. But he has such a passion for the kind of challenging, thought-provoking science fiction that I love and he does it such justice. I hope he can help start a renaissance of science fiction and show that there's so much more to it that space battles and giant robots fighting.

I can't imagine the sense of shared artistic prowess Denis must experience when working with Timothée. Timothée's capacity to convey volumes of intensity and meaning through the subtlety and nuance of facial control is too powerful to be exquisite; it's borderline magic. And every one of his films is a masterpiece, maybe it doesn't always show at the box office (Like Blade Runner) but the sense of style and execution is always lovingly made and looks like its director. Nolan And Villeneuve are today's "big" movie makers, I always look forward to theyr movies. And I think it's pointless to argue which one is better or more skilled, both have proven themselves to be the top names in their field, I look at both with equal pleasure.

Also, a director has to have a personal vision, not just copying.

I read the first 4 books of frank Herbert's dune in high school. Dune messiah is a sad part of the series in which you will see the begining of Muad'dib's demise. he becomes a victim of his own prophesy and greatness.

The crowning book of the entire Dune series is NOT Dune or even Dune Messiah ... the literary apex of the series is actually God Emperor of Dune.

Why on earth would Denis call Christopher Walken's 'walk without rhythm' a 'furious coincidence' when he could've called it a 'terrible purpose'?

It's funny bc going off the movies he makes you'd think Denis would be some harsh, pretentious Kubrik-type bur dude is always grinning and so humble and light in conversation
