It seems like no one makes an oil filter with all of the right stuff-"best of the best". The Purolator Boss I think comes the closest. If I could get the Ford Performance oil filter with the Purolator Boss filter media, that would be the most awesome best oil filter for me. Keep up the good work and reviews coming.

A02 is a good filter. It does the job for those who will follow 3000-7000k mile oil change. Plenty of A02 filters cut open with variable mileage from 3000 -10000 miles have been seen. There is one on youtube here that looks great at 7000miles. Looks even better when it is all saturated with oil.

@bigwilliearmitage

Yep. People, like this guy, just look at visuals of the construction and pick a winner. That might be good when reviewing a hammer, but, does an oil filter that LOOKS better actually meet factory specs for bypass pressure, flow rate, micron filtration, filter media area, etc? They have no idea, but it sure does LOOK better. Honda specs a filter to meet the needs of the engine and those specs are based on testing and experience. The Honda OEM filter above is used throughout their lineup, and has been for MANY years, in millions of engines. I trust the engineers who build their renowned engines and wrote the specs. I have no problem choosing the proven Honda filter over another brand that just looks better.

Nice comparison! Honda actually suggests changing the oil filter every other oil change and they recommend 1 year/10K mile oil changes for normal use on many models, so Honda apparently has confidence in their filters lasting up to 20K miles and 2 years. I wouldn't take it that nearly far either, but I don't see 5K miles or 1 year as a risk at all on either filter. For what it's worth, I have cut open the OEM A02 filters after about a year of use and they still seemed totally intact with no noticeable deterioration or weakening of the paper or the end caps. If you want to see an actually great OEM Honda filter, look up Whip City Wrencher's review of the European market Purflux made 15400-RBA-F01, it looks nicer than this filter in every way imaginable and would be my number one choice for my Hondas if they were available here for a decent price.

@@benchmark3332 That's true, good point. However, if the oil filter that they have been using on almost everything they ever made for about the last 20 years was actually failing at the recommended service intervals, I would think that would have been proven by now instead of still being argued about with absolutely no actual evidence of any problems. Also, Honda probably didn't earn their reputation for building some of the greatest engines in the industry (and other industries) by using terrible oil filters. They never really were known for good automatic transmissions lol.

Great video. My 2000 Lexus SUV had what I believe to be the original (denso) 3 spark plugs in the back...the ones that are hard to reach..when they were all changed at 210000 miles. Someone had just changed the 3 in the front at some point. Those densos really didn't look all that bad. Sure.they we're worn..but no real major change in performance after all the plugs were changed. Just incredible. It was 20 years old at the time. Still on the road.

Look into Union Sangyo filters, they are built like OEM (Japanese style Toko Roki). Same style can, end caps and sealing gaskets. It's possible they manufacture OEM oil filters for the Asian market. Like we have Fram making Honda and Subaru filters. * If you wanna really look into it I saw a filter that looks like a Honda A01 and made in Japan. It has a diffrent number as it is geared towards power equipment. Most likely they bring in Japan made ones for Marine and Power Equipment stuff. I Honda cutting cost instead of bringing Japanese filters.

The filter media on the honda filter looks much better (thcker) than the denso filter. Did you actually test the filters in the field? I bet you would find that the honda filter does a better job considering the more robust and thicker filter media. Honda (Fram) spends more money on what's important like filter media than what isn't important like end caps. Nothing wrong with cardboard endcaps. They seal very well and can be glued to the filter media better that to metal. Glue will adhere to cardboard endcaps better than metal.

David N, there’s a reason 95% of the oil filters out there use metal end caps. It doesn’t matter how robust the filter media is if it collapses/distorts and leaks oil past its robust filter media. Just look at all the oil filters cut open to prove this fact. Even Fram uses metal end caps on their “better” Titanium oil filters. U should tell Fram about your cardboard glue theory so maybe they’ll use it on their better (metal end cap) Titanium Fram filters.

Toyota doesn’t use end caps because they really aren’t that important! What matters more is the anti drainback valve and the bypass valve because one keeps the oil in the filter and the other one opens up if the oil is too thick so it can go straight to the engine without being filtered 🤷🏻‍♂️ but yet people get there panties in bunches over cardboard end caps lol Toyota knows what they are doing they are not stupid

You can do that and the engine will still survive through the warranty period but shortly thereafter you will start having excessive wear issues such as high oil consumption, exhaust smoke, vibrations, etc which of course will mean having to purchase Honda replacement parts. With margins being very slim now on actual auto sales, nearly all auto manufacturers have re-focused their profit goals towards replacement parts sales, thus we have seen recommended motor oil and trans fluid change intervals getting ridiculously long even in the face of clear evidence that what appears in the manual is leading to serious mechanical issues down the road (after the warranty has expired) and the manufacturers are more than happy to suggest those exaggerated service intervals since it makes their vehicles look like they have very low maintenance costs which automotive journalists and consumer buying guides then award more points/stars to that brand or model because of the low maintenance costs and then pronounce that model to be a "Best Buy" so yeah... there are many motives behind suggesting these ridiculously exaggerated service intervals but anyone who has been in the automotive repair industry for decades and has been able to eyewitness what happens LONG TERM to vehicles that follow the exaggerated service intervals will tell you that those intervals are based on absolute "best case scenario" which practically don't exist for 90% of drivers and will lead to mechanical issues down the road, once the car owner is responsible for repairs and the warranty has expired. Even if you have a car that is under warranty and you have a service agreement with the dealership OR oil changes are included for the first 3 years and the dealer tells you they can only change the oil every 10,000 miles, you can still take the car to the dealer for the 10,000 mile free oil change BUT get that oil changed half way in between the 10,000 miles, you can do it yourself and even if you have minimal mechanical skills and don't want to get under the car you can even get an oil pump which has a hose that just slides down the dipstick tube and suctions the used oil out and then you can add new oil halfway through that 10,000 mile interval (at the 5000 mile mark) and you will be making a big difference in the long term life of that engine. Same goes for the transmission, many manufacturers are now claiming "life time trans fluid which will last the life time of the transmission". What the manufacturer is not telling you though is that they consider the "lifetime" of that transmission to be the length of the warranty. Again, if you want that transmission to last with no issues for as long as that car is on the road, change out that trans fluid every 60k miles MAX. If you do any towing, a lot of mountain driving, soft-roading/off-roading, etc, then seriously consider 30k to 40k trans fluid change-outs. Every competent automotive technician will tell you the same (except for the corporate employed techs that are being paid to play dumb) based on the reality that they see every day. Unfortunately every major car manufacturer has fallen in to this "post-warrantly" replacement parts profitability machine game and it's now up to the customer to read through the deceptive "maintenance schedules" and do what is right for longevity of the car rather than what is right for post-warranty replacement parts sales.

@@fomoco300k The prices on Amazon will vary quite a bit since each vendor (many times just some joe blow who set up an Amazon sellers account while sitting on his bed) on Amazon can prices things (such as oil filters) as they wish. Usually the best deals or less common oil filters (such as Denso) will be where Ford Boss Me got his, that is, Rock Auto. Because of Rock Auto's deep discounting and shipping fee, it makes most sense to order in quantity which is what most people do when ordering from Rock Auto since the shipping fee only goes up slightly for when ordering for example 6 oil filters versus just 1 so that in turn splits the shipping fee per filter to a reasonable amount which in most cases will still be much cheaper than either Amazon or local auto supply stores. Because Rock Auto also carries a mind boggling supply of other automotive parts and supplies, it's very easy to find other things you might need for your vehicle(s) and then just add some oil filters in along with the order.

They are able to purchase these Honeywell (Fram) filters at less than half the price of what they were paying for the Japanese Subaru filter so made a lot of sense from the profitability standpoint of the Subaru service centers. People love to hate on these filters for the fiber end caps and leaf spring (vs coil spring) but these filters do get the job done and are fine for daily drivers. I've seen people put 350,000+ miles on their cars using exclusively these Honeywell filters (when changed every 3K miles) with no issues. There just a visual issue, yeah metal end caps look better and our brains still operate in caveman mode so we think metal strong , fiber weak, metal better! (enter caveman holler here) but I've seen oil filter failures in practically every design include those with metal end caps and actually have noticed more filter media failures with metal end caps versus fiber end caps, especially in higher output engines and/or higher oil pressure because most filters with metal end caps have the filter media glued to the end caps and that glue is like an epoxy, very hard and non-flexible and that lack of flexibility at the point where the filter media meets the end cap has lead to the filter media ripping at that spot since the filter media wants to flex but the glued part will now. In the case of the fiber end caps, they do not use glue, the fiber end cap are ultrasonically fused to the filter media which allows for the fiber end cap flex with the filter media as well. That's precisely why Honeywell developed the fiber end caps and the fusing process in the first place, it was precisely because of the issues with rips/tears in filter media due to non-flexible, hard glued metal end caps. That being said, it's less of an issue nowadays as filter manufacturers have developed better/stronger filter media but even so, it does still occur and much more often than any issues with the fiber end caps. Your Honda Honeywell filter is still good for 96% filtration at 20 microns (better than many metal end cap filters) so that fact coupled with your 3k to 5k oil changes will keep your engine happy for hundreds of thousands of miles bar any other unrelated issues.

Do you have any recommendations for what to do about a $4k dealer quote on a DPF replacement? 2018 transit, 5 cylinder turbodiesel. Seems kinda pricey for a fancy cat.

Pops is hoping to get something back from Ford, there was an egr recall, and ours mightve f*ed with the dpf, idk, I just think its double what it should cost. $1k part, $1k labor right?

I know its not the same fancy vehicle, but I just spent the last 7 months rebuilding my Nissan hardbody from the frame up for less than $2k. Sure I did most of it on my own, but it really makes me not want to get my own transit.

I dont get why the dpf is so tightly tucked up in there. Of course they couldn't just put it in an easily accessible spot. Ive f*ed with enough tight spaces in the last 7 months for the rest of my life. I may have to get rid of my belongings and head off to monastic life if we're just gonna keep charging each other more and more to live on God's free giant garden.

I guess thats new England for you though. We got no problem making debtors of our neighbors up here. I remember I got a muffler done in Louisiana once, and the guy chuckled bc I didn't even wince at his price.

I thought there was some kind of provision in the recall if the EGR cooler does mess up the DPF there's some kind of coverage there

Thanks for bringing up that it's an A02, I don't know if you listened to me or not but they're totally different. See if you can track down HAMP, Honda use to make performance filters but it was just a rebadged something else. www.icbmotorsport.com/jdmhohasysmo.html one of this brand, but not this one specifically, they came on the Civic Type R when you got it from the lot.
