Sometimes, we don't know what we don't know. What you think is abnormal about your denture experience might be totally common. Likewise, there's people out here struggling with things they think are just part of being a denture wearer when they are, in fact, not part of a normal experience at all. I hope this video helps demystify some of that. If there's something I left off, drop a comment!

One thing I've noticed after getting dentures. If you leave the house without your dentures you WILL meet someone that wants to talk. I don't have scientific proof but I'm sure it's a law of the universe.

I had at one time or another almost every procedure known to man done to my teeth. I had an in front partial break in 2019 and my dentist said it's time. There was nothing left to build on. So he refered me to a facial surgeon who removed everything along with some bone (three and a half hours worth). I waited eight weeks for healing then got my first set of teeth then got my permanant ones a year later. Went to work five days after surgery and because I have a full beard no one even noticed. My speech didn't really change. August 22 will mark five years and no problems. I have very little suction on my tops so I use a little powder and they are good for all day. Thought about bottom implants but they cost so much and I am retired now so can't afford them anyway. Like you said everyone is different and I wish the best for anyone who gets them because it is a life changing event. One last thing and that is you have the most beautiful blue eyes and no I am not a dirty old man I just know simple beauty when I see it. You have this. Thank you for what you have done in past and continue to do. Your help is invaluable to people who are going through dentures. Thank you again...

Wow, thank you so much for sharing your experience! It sounds like you've been through a lot, and it's great to hear that things have worked out well for you. Have you heard of Cushion Grip? They sell it on Amazon. Maybe worth looking into for your top denture. I appreciate your kind words and encouragement. Also, thank you for the compliment-that's very kind of you! I'm glad to be able to help. Take care and all the best to you!

@@kalinjax Aspen Dental has been a nightmare! I had my remaining 5 front lower teeth extracted 9 months ago and the Aspen dentist did not put in any sutures, he had no mammal free sutures in the office even though I had informed him of my AlphaGal mammal allergy a month prior to surgical extractions. I paid in full for the best, Comfilytes package. My permanent dentures do not fit, I cannot get them in and they look like Halloween prop plastic. They look nothing like what is advertised and I was given only 3 tooth shade choices...not the 20 choices advertised. The gums are bubblegum pink. Any advice? I paid a LOT for quality dentures and what they gave me look like two dollar novelty teeth.

I experienced a lot of the same issues too, thinking that everything’s wrong, they’re too big, they don’t look right etc. Let me encourage all of you to not give up. Yes it’s quite difficult and painful but I promise if your dentures were made correctly everything will work out. I never thought I’d be able to handle it, but after a while it becomes normal.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great video. One of the things that drove me crazy was biting my inside cheeks constantly at the beginning. Plus I had to learn all over again how to speak, because every now & then I would hear a low whistle at the beginning. The best part of the entire ordeal was that I lost a lot of weight, since I was eating soft meals & soups, at the beginning.

I am 40 and had 25 teeth pulled in April and have been wearing my upper plate adhesive free this whole time. My bottom denture I was only able to wear for 2 days before it started digging a hole in my gums. My dentist is remaking a lower denture for me because of how different things were post-op. So that has left me with a hybrid healing adventure which has been challenging. I had terrible dental hygiene before this but now I love the ability to thoroughly clean everything. So twice a day I pop them out for a good scrubbing and I clean my mouth as if I had teeth. One thing that surprised me was the changes in my skin through the healing process. I started to get acne pretty badly for a couple weeks. Now my skin is becoming really clear and looking younger. I went through the depression of thinking I would never enjoy food again for the first six weeks or so due to the healing/learning process. Then one day I just started chewing again and since then every meal has been a bit better. I'm at the point now where my diet is returning to normal and I am learning how to eat sandwiches again! I go in 3 days to get my new bottom plate and I'm pushing myself to eat a steak within a couple days lol. Just last night I was able to eat chicken wings without issue and slowly tackle a burger with no glue on top and no teeth on the bottom.

Thank you for all your videos. They were a big help to me over a year and a half ago when I was going in to get dentures. I had a front tooth break (root canal finally gave out) and several other upper teeth that were on the verge. Watching your videos and a few others helped me to know what to expect. It helped me to prepare physically (getting soft foods, Ensure, etc) and mentally for the process. I knew what to expect for the impressions, so it wasn't scary (my husband who was with me nearly passed out). I started with the upper denture and only had 7 teeth left up there to extract so my post op was much easier than yours. My dentist and denturist (in the same office) were terrific in letting me know what to expect post extraction and sent me home with written and verbal instructions as well as a good supply of towels which I later understood was for all the drooling on the way home (1 1/2 hours away). I did have mild gag reflex the first day but was gone by day 2. Extra Strength Tylenol and Advil worked great and only needed it til the end of the 2nd day (again, I only had 7 teeth extracted). The only other thing I should mention is that with all extractions there is a possibility of little pieces of bone working their way out through your gums up to a month or so after the extractions. The dentist told me it was a possibility and if it happened to come in and they would get it the rest of the way out. I did have a couple shards poke through (felt like a sharp pinpoint pain-not horrible). When I touched it with my fingernail, I could tell that it was a piece of bone and that I could move it. I was able to work it out with my fingernail and remove it. The second one a week or so later came out just as easy so no need to drive 1 1/2 hours to the dentist. Keep up the good work of making these videos. They are a big help to so many people! 🙂

1.05pm Adelaide. South Australia. Monday 24th June 2024. Thank you so much for making this informative video 🙂 You appeared in my KZfaq - Recommended to watch section today and I am so glad I watched your video. After a number of years struggling to be comfortable wearing my new smile and eating without almost choking on dislodged lower teeth, your video has given me the confidence to make the call to do something about it. I never realised that bone could disappear and I ran my finger along where my dentures sit and discovered my back upper and lower left jaw hasn't got anything there for the denture to hold on to. It explains why they dislodge every time my tongue moves when putting a small amount of food in my mouth. I just about choked on the lower denture when at a restaurant and it was both scary and embarrassing. There is so much we are not told before getting dentures. Thank you for providing such a valuable public service and showing us how, with practice and patience, we can achieve this goal ♥️

I had the All on 4 done back in March of 2023. I've had 1 anchor fail to integrate and may be looking at a 2nd anchor placement and am still in my immediates over a year later. When i got my immediates, it was a shock after not having upper teeth for about 4 years. You have to re-learn everything. It just takes time and patience and practice. It's not a quick process if you've not had teeth for a while.

I had my extractions and received my immediate partials nearly a year ago. I was obsessed with the healing status of the extraction sites. I had to know every day what they were supposed to look like. I lucked out by not having bruising and very little swelling. The healing takes patience for sure. I should be getting my permanent partials soon, and it’s nice to know that I won’t have to endure the healing process.

Everything you have mentioned is what I am going through now! I had my extractions done about three weeks ago and am STILL trying to get used to my "Immediate Dentures" I feel like I have a mouthful of marbles and yes, the saliva is getting better now! I am still trying to learn to talk better by reading stories out loud, saying the alphabet etc. Eating is still a challenge but with persistence hopefully I will get that mastered! I will go for my permanent Dentures at the first of the year and pray to God they fit better than these cumbersome things!!

You are doing such good work coming forward and sharing your experiences. I'm a firm believer that isolation and being misinformed is the worst thing for the human experiment. I'm now 58 and have 30 years of extensive dental work. I now have Type 2 diabetes. (normal thing due to my family DNA). Long story short I was ready to replace all of my teeth with dentures. Not only from the cost (ongoing) but your body heals slower and you have a higher risk of infection from type 1 or 2 diabetes. My grandfather died at a young age for his gingivitis turned into pyuria and then turned into throat cancer. That was in the early 40's. I'm now wearing my training top plate and I feel so fortunate that my dentist is a perfectionist.

Had to have all teeth extracted 4 at a time due to our wonderful medical community. (Long story) Finished up 8 months ago. Went back to the dentist for dentures not the $35, - $40,000 implants! Of course after 8 months everything has healed up completely and I've learned what I can and cannot eat. Dentist said I had a very good upper and lower ridge line and they took molds. Now I guess the biggest battle will be trying to get used to having two hockey pucks in my mouth and to practice leaving them in sufficiently to get acclimated to them. Thank you very much for all of your hard work and effort in putting out your videos. You do a great service to thousands of people desperate for much needed info and support. 🫶 ✌️😎

I just had my remaining teeth pulled this morning and have elected regular dentures as opposed to immediate dentures. I just can't imagine putting teeth in my mouth until after I am completely healed. It has taken me over 2 years to finally get my dentist to realize it was time to do this. I had a permanent bridge replaced after I retired to AZ, then within a few years it had to be replaced again. The third time (all within 8 years) decay did damage yet again and I put my foot down and said no more throwing good money after bad. Old fillings were coming out, gums were receding, teeth were chipping and shaling and I had enough. It took 2 years of my dentist refusing to pull "good teeth" until he finally realized what I was living with. Every tooth that needed more than a tiny filling came out. I stood firm. I am nearly 71 and wanted to do this before it would be harder to bounce back. I have 4 complete joint replacements SO FAR, and my fear is that I will end up with a dental abcess that infects a joint, which could mean a revision. As it was my dental insurance authorized 4 cleanings per year due to my history of problems, and I am maniacal about brushing and flossing, so when my dentist did my exam after my last cleaning he said "it's time". I literally cried. I was tired of having only 2 opposing teeth to try to chew with (bicuspids) and a terrible bite alignment from having teeth pulled as they needed work. Everything in my mouth was shifting. Now I will get used to going without teeth for about 6 months before we do impressions. I don't go out much due to other health issues, and I am not bothered by the toothless state so I can get a good fitting set of dentures. I left the office about 1:00 this afternoon, and 15 hours later most of the swelling has gone down, bleeding is reduced to almost zero, and I am entertaining myself as I try to speak. I had to write notes to communicate with my hubby or let my Sicilian gesturing get me through today. Sorry, I am rambling. I will blame it on me having been stifled all day! Tomorrow I get to do gentle rinses with salt water, and my ice packs (frozen veggies) will help with the rest of the swelling. Most of the pain was from the injection sites for the local anesthesia, and there were a lot of injections. I did ask for nitrous before the injections because all teeth except one were in front. Those injections really do hurt. I think that was the worst part! I really appreciate your videos. You are a great source for real life information. There is a lot of good information on KZfaq that has helped me to lay out a plan. I think I will turn in now. I am bushed! Good night, and thanks again!

Thanks for watching! If I had the money, I would definitely get implants. First, because they preserve the jaw bone. Next, because the palate isn't covered. Lastly, because they are secure. No movement, whatsoever. So I don't need any relines, nor do I need to spend money on adhesives to keep them in place. They have very much become a part of my mouth and the only time I think about them not being my teeth is when I am at the dentist or talking about them.

I went through my extractions process almost a year ago. All I can say is that my dentist was double charging us. Once I switched from HMO to PPO she got mad. She then started to treat me like a transaction vs a person. I had my teeth taken out in batches due to my blood pressure. I was never given dentures until everything was out. When I finally got my teeth they were ok. Midline was slightly off and the bottom didn’t fit at all. When I went back for a follow up visit they said that they couldn’t see me due to my insurance. Yet we were paying out of pocket for them. I finally got another appointment and yet again they couldn’t see me. I didn’t go back until 2 months later. This dentist put impression material onto my denture and took an impression like that. I thought it was definitely weird but I trust the process. My teeth got sent to the lab and when I ask the dentist when we would be starting the process for my permanent set. She turned to me and said these are you permanent teeth. I will have them adjusted and they will fit great. I did not get my teeth back for three weeks when I finally went back for my teeth my bottoms, which were perfectly fine just didn’t fit. They were now slanted and crooked. Then, when I told the dentist about that mind you, I wasn’t given a mirror to even see my dentures how they looked. Her response was you remember when you came here you remember how your teeth looked well it is not the teeth. It’s your jaw your jaw made your teeth that way and I told her but the bottoms didn’t do that before and she said it’s your jaw. It’s not the teeth. It’s your jaw all that matters is that you can eat. Almost a year later my bottoms were never fixed. I was never offered a new set for their poor work. Still paying on them and was told if I want my permanent set I will need to pay an additional $8000. When that wasn’t told to me prior. I am grateful that I have trained myself how to eat again (only wearing the tops). What happened to me isn’t everyone’s story but this has been very frustrating for me as I told this dentist my fear was having something non functional like what happened to my mom. She assured me and promised me something that she couldn’t deliver.

@16:42 if you are getting implants and you have healing abutments, you have to clean them too! I'm awaiting permanent restorations, still in partial denture, but I'm now brushing my abutments. There's nothing there to floss but I can feel the metal with my toothbrush so I know I'm hitting the spots. My perio says he's seeing more and more infections around implants, it's never too early to start cleaning around implants.

Great video!!!! Thank you! I haven’t been able to eat with my temporary dentures in since my extraction surgery in April. I’ve been back to the dentist three times, but only see the technicians 🤨, and I’ve told them I’m unable to eat with my dentures in because they’re not fitting correctly and they move and slide everywhere. They always tell me that’s normal and the permanent ones will be wonderful and look great and will fit. What about right now when I need to eat??? I’m glad you addressed this situation. My mind was telling me this wasn’t normal even though the techs continued to tell me everything it’s all normal. So, my question is: can I change dentists even though someone else has done all the initial work?
@kalinjax
@kalinjax 13 күн бұрын
Yes, this is totally normal, unfortunately. I know it's frustrating. I think a lot of people think it will either come naturally or that it won't be as challenging as it is. You have to practice to build up muscle memory and the best way to do this is without adhesive. Let them flop allover. Of course, do this at home. But the more you allow yourself to fail with them, the more you will get used to utilizing your tongue, cheeks, and facial muscles in general to keep them in. You have not used your mouth his way prior to getting dentures. It's a unique experience. I think it's like playing a guitar. You watch people move their fingers all over the fretboard with ease but if you've never played, your fingers aren't going to be able to stretch so far and it's going to be uncomfortable and feel impossible. It just takes a LOT of practice.

I got a new pair of dentures and they don’t fit right. I couldn’t talk right and it looked like I had buck teeth. I couldn’t eat anything with them. I took them back to the dentist to get an adjustment and they still didn’t fit right. They weren’t gonna remake them so I ended up putting my old dentures back in my mouth even though I know I need new dentures cause I get sores on my gums every once in awhile. I am 59 years old and have had dentures since I was 35 years old. I would like to get implant dentures on the bottom but not on top. My insurance will pay for the denture implants for the whole bottom dentures but I don’t know what I should look for in implants

I was definitely lucky as I barely had any swelling. I had 26 teeth extraxted at once wide awake. I wore a facial ice back 20 minutes on 20 minutes off. I also did salt (pink) water rinses. The true test though is if I'll even be able to wear dentures. I already had an underbite and overbite. I recently found out I also have a small palate and some bone loss too.

My journey starts July 8th whole mouth extraction and implants top and bottom, the intention was only implants on bottom because the Doc said suction is notoriously difficult with the bottom, I thought about it and decided okay. Well, when I went in for my last “last X-ray” the one where they use a hand held and work around every inch of your mouth? They discovered I had quite a large bony ridge on the roof of my mouth and the Doc said it’s okay I can remove that, I looked at him and said nope lolzzz, he said well it goes all the way from the front to the back and suction won’t work. I asked if there was any other way and he said yes you can have a horse shoe which is basically the same as your bottom application. I thought about it and decided let’s do it. Yes I’m very fortunate I have two dental providers and it’s working out well for me. I do have one question I really wanted to get CZ or Porcelain but my Doc said he wouldn’t suggest it only because they are significantly heavier and he would like to see me have them later and make sure my implants heal well with no extra stress. Sorry for the book I’m very anxious, very excited and scared.

I'm almost 2 months post-op immediate upper dentures, I'm healed up nicely and had no issues with that. My denture got super loose by day 10 to the point where they would drop right out of my mouth even with adhesive. I finally was able to be seen three days ago for my first soft reline. They fit a bit better now, but they still start to slide down as soon as I open my mouth. They will stay in with adhesive now but without it they are still falling down. Is that normal? I read that they should be able to stay in without adhesive.

After getting all my teeth out some cut out and stichedand some pulled, I didn't have to much trouble, just thick red blood for about a week. Six months later I go to my dentist and get his best quality dentures. A year in, they still slide around even with adhesive. My teeth also feel like blocks in my mouth like there is to much teeth for the size of my mouth. My dentures spend a lot of time in the container with denture cleaner. I have come to like no teeth vs having my teeth in. With a wet mouth, and using adhesive, I put my dentures in to go out. A quick trip to the convenience store I will often just pop on my covid mask, and now it's 06/_/2024. I am often the only one to have a mask on.

They losen up after about 4 or 5 hours.Also have sore spots that the dentist called spurs. To me it feels like slivers of left over tooth that move up and down left from the extractions. Feels sharp and when i try to see if i can pull them out they slide up into my gums.

@kalinjax
@kalinjax 13 күн бұрын
This is a common problem with the bottom denture. Adapting to dentures, especially bottom ones, involves using your facial muscles differently and building muscle memory. The muscles in your cheeks, tongue, and lips are key to stabilizing the dentures. It's not something that comes naturally at first. With practice, these muscles will learn to work together more effectively, leading to better control and comfort over time. What helped me was practicing with intention without adhesive so I could build that muscle memory. I hope this helps.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I plan on making a video very soon about patients being gaslighted by their dentists because it’s a problem I’m seeing way too often and getting pretty sick of it. Of course there are patients that really do make up reasons to complain or they have very unrealistic expectations but that is not the norm at all. Usually, it’s a patient that is having serious difficulties and the dentist is putting them into averages that just do not apply to them. No accountability either.

Wow! That was a lot of great information in a short time. I think watching videos like this helped to prepare my mind so that I wouldn't be freaked out. I saw you and I thought, if she can do it then, I can do it. Honestly, the biggest problem that I'm having is mourning my teeth. It's hard not to look back and not blame yourself. It's like an amputation. However, I am extremely grateful that my dentist made me temporary ones. I believe in gratitude. It goes a long way toward helping in a bad situation. I'm always aware that if someone knocks at the door that the first thing that I have to do is run and put in my teeth. I know that I will adjust to that idea. I have suffered from depression since I was 20 years old so, I have tried and fought very hard not to let depression be part of the situation. My depression comes and goes and doesn't really depend on my life situation at the time. I look around and I see that there are a lot of people that are suffering emotionally right now even if they don't have something like all their teeth pulled at once. I want to still be able to be there for them. I'm going in a week for my second re line. I noticed from the shrinkage of my gums that the top pallet is now sitting way farther back. I never gagged once and I've been wearing these for a few months. Now, I can't keep it in without gagging immediately. I know that the dentist can fix this situation. Our gums shrink more than we realize and it seems like every week or so, they fit completely differently. I'm still eating nothing but mashed potatoes, overcooked macaroni and different kinds of beans. And, I feel weak. I know I have to add some different nutrition to my diet. My primary physician told me to eat carrots. 😅 I can't believe it's been so long since this journey started for you. I truly am feeling the depression of this and I always am reminded that over 90% of this is mental. If my husband hadn't passed away then, I would be laughing and I wouldn't be alone. I lost my mom a year ago and I've never been this isolated. Then again, the whole world is hurting right now. I'm very sensitive and I feel it. So, I'm not complaining. I find it hard to cry alone in order to let some of the bad feelings out. My husband passed away on our kitchen floor on his birthday. I was alone from that moment on and I didn't cry for 2 months because, I thought if I started crying that I might start screaming and then who would be here to stop me. I thanked someone who does videos for laughing so much because, I started laughing with him and then I start crying and I do feel better. It ended up with him getting attacked over and over for laughing. Today, he barely smiled while he made his videos. People are so mean. Anyway, thanks for listening. You are helping a lot of people to know what to expect. I'm so glad that you're aware that you may be 14 years in but, there are thousands of people that are at day one all over the world. You're making a meaningful difference. 🩷

If I were you and unless you have lots of money or really good dental insurance I would pass on immediate dentures. I know what your thinking you don't want people seeing you without teeth. Well your letting people see you now with teeth that must look pretty horrible so what's the difference? A good dentist will recommend not getting immediate dentures because of the swelling, pain shrinkage, fitment and all the trips back to the dentist so much can go wrong. Everything needs time to heal and your mouth is no different. Atleast 8 months to a year is what they recommend to let everything heal and for your permanent dentures to fit good and without much if any pain. And did I mention the cost of getting both. Its best to wait but alot of people care to much about what other people think of their appearance. They aren't the ones paying for everything they aren't the ones going through the pain physically and mentally. I cried the day I had mine pulled because it's a huge change in so many different ways. However I had no choice but to pass on immediate dentures due to not having dental insurance or thousands of dollars. I'm glad I waited though because ive heard of so much trouble with immediate dentures but if you have the best insurance and cash than go for both it's a waste of money though. And regardless of what people think especially your friends and family their going to know you have dentures regardless if there being worn or not

@@dannycolemire2652 I have been fighting all my life to keep my teeth. I have spent 10,000’s and 10 1000s of dollars to try to keep my teeth and that was with insurance. God blessed me with a good husband, even though he is not rich by far. As he was active duty army for 20+ years, he would always find a way. I was fortunate enough to get my top 10 in 2019 right in the nick of time because I was Septic. I started losing my bottom teeth in 2020 when we moved to Fort Hood, Texas, and I was too embarrassed, too scared to see a dentist. I was scared because I could never walk out of the dentist office with the bill less than 4 to 5 grand. I’m lucky enough to have all six on the top, but we just couldn’t afford the lower. I have four implants on the bottom for snap in and to be honest I wish I would’ve waited. To know it’s only been two months and I’m insecure. What am I gonna be like in 3, 4, and 5 months!? I just came back from visiting my oldest son who is 35 and for my 54th birthday he made a dream of mine coming true. I got to swim with dolphins at discovery Cove, and i loved and cherish every single moment. up until I seen the pictures of myself. My lower lip looks like I literally have dip in it. That night, looking at the pictures and album he had made for me. I sat by myself and cried to me the pictures are hideous. To think my husband is paying $15k for this makes me sick to my stomach. I actually can eat less now than I could with five bottom front, broken teeth, and five ready to fall out. It’s really embarrassing and it really takes a toll on your mental health. I honestly think it’s disturbing and disgusting that when people have medical issues that are insurance does not cover any major dental work. Especially when you have spent so much money and time trying to save your teeth. Trust me back in 2019. I’m not only contacted the military insurance company, but also the Dental board and even wrote to the White House. Nobody seems to care and that’s really sad.
