A Denver family says it has lost three cars in hit-and-run crashes after the city reconfigured a nearby cul-de-sac. The Johnson family moved into their house in the Green Valley Ranch neighborhood in 1999. Their home used to be located next to a cul-de-sac. The City of Denver opened up the cul-de-sac and put in a road about two years ago, according to the Johnsons. Since then, the family says they've had to deal with a lot of traffic and frequent car crashes in the area. Elvin Johnson said his family has lost three vehicles to hit-and-run crashes. Two of the cars were hit while parked in the driveway. The third car was hit when it was parked on the street in front of his home. “My biggest concerns is my property and, you know, the things that I'm losing, you know, when no one's being accountable for it. It’s just coming out of my pocket," said Johnson.

Although it would require extra expense on his part, if the city does not do anything, just build a 2-foot high retaining wall. There are many decorative mortar-less concrete retaining wall bricks in various colors and styles that stack and lock together. Give the retaining wall an elegant curve to it and your car and home are now protected from stupid drivers!

@@gmfitzg HOAs are *HIGHLY* variable in how restrictive they are. He lives in Green Valley Ranch. I have heard of snobby HOAs in Highlands Ranch that require homeowners to have lush green grass all over their front yards, instead of putting in a large xeriscape garden bed or letting the grass go more dormant and brown during a drought year. But judging by how there are small dead trees and adjacent fields that are never mowed, his neighborhood looks like there either is no HOA or the HOA is very lax and loose with restrictions lol. With most HOAs that are not as restrictive as some areas of Highlands Ranch, you can submit a proposal to add a retaining wall to your front yard and they will allow it. A neatly-installed curved retaining wall looks a lot better than that unmown field right next to his fence. If that street is paying HOA dues, they are not getting their money's worth of neighborhood upkeep!

Hi! I’m the daughter of the guy in the video. This is a good idea and I can say that I’ll put it on my parents radar. Not 100% sure how strict our HOA is but the worst they can tell us is no, so it’s worth a shot!

@@Ramonagummibearzz Hi Rachel! Yes, it would be even better if the HOA or city installed a metal guard rail along the street that extends beyond where the dip is at the intersection and goes past that yellow fire hydrant. It is not just property damage to your home's cars and fencing, but it may be just a matter of time before a human or kids walking towards the intersection get run over by a car that speeds onto the grass and sidewalk, and your father needs to emphasize that to your HOA or city officials!!!! Whether it is your father shoveling snow during winter and (as he mentioned in the video) the cars may be spinning off the road toward him or an unsuspecting pedestrian is walking along that sidewalk or children happen to be playing in the street, your intersection is a bad car-hits-human tragedy waiting to happen! The fact that your father has had hit-and-runs happen to his cars and property is likely the combination of 3 factors: (1) that drainage dip in the road at the intersection meant to direct rainwater causing people to lose control of their car when they turn the corner too fast, (2) excessive speed by the drivers, and (3) the high likelihood that most or all of the drivers were drunk when they sped off the road across your lawn and hit your cars. Having police crackdowns on speeders along that road is only a very temporary solution. The city could also install one or two speed bumps molded along that road (E 38th Ave?) on both sides of that intersection along with a "Speed bump and Dip at Intersection" sign right before the turn. At the very least, a "Slow - Dip Ahead" sign needs to be posted right before the turn into your street (even though a drunk driver would not pay attention to such warning signs anyway). So ideally the city or HOA should build a guard rail as I described above. If the city or HOA refuses to build a guard rail (again, your father should emphasize to the city/HOA that the next accident may involve a drunk speeder hitting a human instead of just hitting his cars), your father can check with the HOA about building a 2-foot high retaining wall on his property lining the sidewalk and curving left to his fence. Lots of hardware stores like Home Depot and gardening stores carry a variety of styles of retaining wall bricks that you just stack on top of each other. It would likely take your father less than 2 hours to build a curved retaining wall that looks stylish. If you build a 1-foot high retaining wall or install some large landscaping boulders to act as barriers, some larger trucks and cars may still speed over a low barrier like that. But a 2-foot high retaining wall would have enough height to clog up the underside and tires of cars before they reach your home and driveway! So these hit-and-run drivers would knock over your retaining wall bricks and damage their own car, and you just need to stack the bricks together again after each IDIOT speeder drives off the road towards your home! smdh
