"Deportation, not relocation!" Poland votes on illegal migration

Poland is at a political crossroads: On Sunday voters will decide on both the future of the conservative Law and Justice Party government and whether to accept migrant quotas from the European Union.
The latter vote will be held in the form of a referendum, where Poles are asked: “Do you support the admission of thousands of illegal immigrants from the Middle East and Africa under the forced relocation mechanism imposed by European bureaucracy?”. The question may be biased - many in the opposition parties have pledged to boycott the vote. But it will serve as a weather vane for Polish attitudes both on Brussels and migration.
In a film for The Telegraph, Steven Edginton went to the Polish-Belarusian border to find out how locals plan to vote in the upcoming referendum.

Im voting against illegal immigration, but I fully support people, who want to come here by a legal means, study our language and culture, integrate, commit to our laws and work for our shared future. I have many Ukrainian friends, neighbours and I know many more. Their example is a model on how a nearly ideal immigation and integation process should look like. They aer mostly hard working people, learning our language, helping to eliminate the slight barriers in undestanding between our nations. Im sure majority of people in Poland made similar observations, we all know how big of a burden a mass, illegal immigration can be.

I am a LEGAL immigrant in Canada. I came here to get my posgraduate degree. I had to proof my English proficiency, undergo health and financial checks, provide professional recommendations, validate all my diplomas, undergo interviews with the university. Once I came here, I had to study and work hard, save money to afford all my necessities, I rejected the financial aid Trudeau was giving when COVID happened because I didn't need it in reality. I graduated and got a job, I work hard and prove myself worthy of being in this country. When I see the crazy amount of refugees and people who are easily accepted to enter the country without any requirement... without basic English, no education, nothing of value to give to the country, I feel angry! It is unfair. I give value to this country, I pay taxes, I respect and I am grateful. But to see people just bringing their poor behaviours and mindset into Canada it's just sad. I support Poland.

Law and Justice Party government ruled in Poland for 8 years and destroyed almost all democratic institutions and the rule of law. Like in Orban's Hungary. They are extreme populists, and hate EU, Germany, the West, and recently Ukraine. Their leaders act in Russia's interest. There are 4 biased questions in the referendum held together with parlamentary elections just to mobilise their voters and allow to spend unlimited money of state owned companies on ads promoting the ruling party and spreading unbilivable hate towards the main opposition party and its leader.

Poland has had this stance for years and was heavily criticized for this for “islamophobia”. But the recent events has proven to the world that Poland was right all along. That’s one of the few good things this war has brought us, a heightened awareness on the dangers of radicalization and the threat of illegal immigration. I went on a trip to Paris with the school in 2015 just after the attacks. Every tourist attraction was filled with immigrants selling crap on the streets, and there were multiple times where they harassed and grabbed our classmates

As a Chinese person who legally immigrated to Australia I agree with Poland. I'm very grateful Australia is an island nation which certainly helps as a passive defence from threats and I think if anyone wants to leave their country should do it legally. I watched my own mother study for the citizenship test on the train with me and even abandoned teaching me our native written language all so I could assimilate well and have a better life away from the political, social and now economic troubles of our home.

I'm an immigrant myself, living in the UK for the last 16 years. I did not come here by my own choice; my parents left Poland to find a better life for me and my siblings. We adapted to this culture and its people, and this is how it should be, not the opposite way where the UK nation should adapt to immigrants. My parents were always working here and not draining the benefit system. Also, how did those immigrants from the Middle East end up in Belarus in the first place? I am a Pole and I completely agree with these people. I'm currently studying in the UK and travelling quite a lot. I can see what's happening in western countries. Go to Poland and check it out how clean and safe the country is. We don't mind travellers and hard working people from abroad living in Poland, but these waves of migrants are ridiculous.

I have visited poland twice, and stayed in sopot and went to krakow, Warsaw, Gdańsk etc. as an American, I was amazed by how clean your country is and how safe I felt in every major city. While I still feel safe visiting Chicago or milwaukee(where I live) there’s still that caution I have in the back of my head to be fully aware of my surroundings or that something could happen out of nowhere - that I never felt in poland. Truly a great and beautiful country
