I've spoken with several people about psychosis and I've found that most have experienced a massive depression after their experience. In this video, I wanted to talk a little bit more about the depression following a psychosis, why it happens, and what we can do to cope with it. I hope it is helpful to some who may have experienced it or are experiencing it.

Yes, I went through this and really feel it was worse than being psychotic. I lost all functionality and things started to break down like my car because I just stayed in bed for three years. I stopped everything and basically had one meal a day, that being all I did. I finally told my mom and she said she had no idea. She started getting together with me twice a day to keep me out of bed. Slowly, I got my car working, fixed several broken things in my house and started to shower and clean my house again. I’m still doing these things but a year later, I still get urges to go to bed. Hopefully, now that I’m getting ready to start volunteer work, I can finally return to my DJ job that I left because of the psychosis 10 years ago.

Thank you for this video. I was in a 4 year psychosis with synchronicities and spirituality. I’ve come to terms with reality vs delusion, and all that’s left is the depression of the wasted time and the feelings of stupidity for the delusions. There are very few videos online that talk about the depression after psychosis, so thank you posting both your advice and experience.

I just want to mention that while I say that it is normal or common for people to experience depression after psychosis I do not mean to say that treatment is not necessary. After my psychosis, I was in therapy and on medication to help me stabilize. It is important to have a support network and professionals in your life to help you through experiences like these. Also if you are feeling suicidal please reach out for help to a medical professional or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255 (for the US) or your respective hotline for your given country. Wishing you all the best. Thanks for watching. 🙂

A little less than two years ago I had a burnout, and then I smoked a large dose of cannabis, after that I had anxiety followed by panic attacks, deep suicidal depression, extreme sleep problems, with my eyes closed I would see disturbing vivid images and much more... 10 mg of olanzapine was my dose after 10 months the doctor stopped the therapy And all the symptoms came back I was so bad I lost hope that it would get better. Back on 5mg olanzapine I was stable. At that time I watched your videos which helped me a lot, and thanks for that! I'm feeling much better now, I'm back at work and hitting the gym also socializing again. I am currently on 2.5 mg of olanzapine before bed and the doctor should take me off therapy in a month, I am still afraid that the symptoms might return. as you say, it is better to stay on the medication as long as it takes and be functional than to rush off the medication. Your videos are very helpful. Greetings from Germany

@@SimpleBach Hi Brian, I'm doing much better thank you, sorry to hear that you are depressed, I have been taking anti-depressants for about 5 months now and they have made a huge difference in my life, the difference between having the motivation to get out of bed in the morning and not having it. They essentially allow you to function relatively well in the circumstances. I think the depression as the result of psychosis will definitely pass as having a psychotic episode is a very traumatic event on the mind. Recovery time for psychosis is usually 6 months to a year depending on the severity of the episode but I reckon you will start to feel more like your old self towards the 6 months mark. It might be worth considering anti-depressants to get through that recovery time, although I suggest you discuss with your doctor if you think it a good idea. If you have any questions about it, I'll be happy to answer to the best of my knowledge. Hang in there, things will go back to normal. Cheers Nic

Nicholas Westmoreland hey Nic, thanks so much for the reply. I’m really glad you are feeling better/found a helpful drug. Did they put you on any antipsychotics as well? I’m on olanzapine and really want to come off due to many side effects, I’ve wondered how much of the depression could be from this drug. My doc recommended adding an antidepressant, but I was too scared of more side effects etc...I’m almost off the antipsychotic now...I wonder if an antidepressant would be safe once I’m off? Would you mind sharing which antidepressant worked for you? Thanks.

@@SimpleBach Hey Brian, no problem, thank you very much. Yes, I was initially put on a high dose of Risperidone(4mg) to get it quickly into my system, but that has now been reduced to 2mg, I know what you mean about side effects although I don't have many, I have what is called emotional flatness or maybe anhedonia(inability to experience pleasure). It's possible the drug could be a cause of your depression, I'm not sure, but I do know that depression is a common symptom after psychosis so I think the psychosis itself could be a big part of it. As far as anti-depressants go, I think it more a case of it either working or not working rather than a case of crazy side effects, I'm on both an anti-psychotic and an anti-depressant and I haven't noticed any new side effects since I went on the anti-depressant, besides being able to cope better with life :) If you compare the two I think anti-psychotics are much more likely to have side effects than anti-depressants, but your Doc would be able to give you a much better idea than me there. The anti-depressant I am on is called Sentraline, it's a fairly common one. There's a slight chance that you might need to try a couple types before you find one that works, but hopefully not, I was lucky there. In my personal experience, it was a very good decision to go on them, there's a world of difference between how I feel now and how I felt just a few weeks after the psychotic episode, part of that is natural recovery of course. If you decide to go on them you will know if it is working in two weeks. Anyways sorry for the long message, I really hope that helps, If you have any more questions I'll be happy to answer them. Cheers Nic

I first of all really wanna thank you for making this video, I am a person who’s been dealing with psychosis several times, I had my last episode past Christmas and am currently at home in the exact feeling as many describe and relate, it’s horrible! And I pray for every single person that has to go to the process. Since my last episode I have to forcibly take Olanzepine and that’s something that is bothering me every single day. I feel like as a person who has experienced psychosis you have to be free as what you do want and don’t. I rather believe in a natural healing process with lot’s of mind-full activities such as meditation and working out in the gym. But unfortunately in some cases being free to chose isn’t optional. As my previous episodes I can surely guarantee that it’s a fase and the depression part is temporary. (but every scenario is different.) I just really wonder if it’s the antipsychotic’s that make most of us feel this way or just the aftermath of the psychosis. Etherway all a fase. Much love and blessings to everyone dealing with this your much stronger than you think.

Hey Hayden, so to answer your question, yes in psychiatry there is a theory called "The Primacy of Mania" (Koukopoulos 2006), which says "mania is the fire, depression is the ash". That is, depression is what happens when your brain is exhausted from mania. However this theory is controversial. In my own case, every mania I have had has been followed by depression, but I have also had depressions that were not preceded by a mania. And there are reportedly people who experience mania and then just come back down to normal, without getting depressed. So it can't be the whole story.
@justbeinghayden9451
@justbeinghayden9451 4 жыл бұрын
That is interesting. It makes sense that the brain would be tired after a mania. Yeah, I have also experienced depression without mania, it something I struggle with off and on. I know there is also depressive psychosis, which is a whole other thing that I do not have any experience with I don't think. And yeah it seems that there are always exceptions to rules or patterns. I'm sorry to hear you are going through that. Depression can be really challenging and isolating so it good you are reaching out and sharing how you feel. There were a few things that helped me during depression. Most of them involve finding a way to change the thought or emotional patterns of depression. One way I found helpful is to get out of the place I normally spent my time in. Going for a walk, hanging out with friends, or doing something outside of the house always helped me feel a little better. Another way is finding something to do to get your mind in a different space, maybe reading a book, playing a game, doing some chores, etc. I also find it helpful to focus on the things I accomplish or can do instead of focusing on the things I can't or didn't do. Another super helpful thing is having a coach or counselor to help navigate through the depression. It can be pretty hard to tackle on your own. Hope some of those are helpful for you. Thank you for sharing. I hope you feel better soon.

It depends on a lot of things. If it was the medication then is should come back with time, but we can also numb ourselves psychologically as well. There can be a lot of reasons why we feel numb and it is very dependent on each individual. If there is an issue with medication then you should talk to your doctor about it as they will know more about how long it takes the the medication to leave your system. Best wishes to you.

My friend who went through psychosis 3 different times for months at a time before a specific antipsychotic brought him out became suicidal after the last 2 times. He admitted himself into the hospital for a 3 day treatment. An antidepressant really helped. I had one friend that swears by Zoloft or Lexapro and another friend who likes Effexor. There’s so many that help now. In my friend’s case an antidepressant was definitely needed-natural remedies such as light therapy, vitamin D, etc--wouldn’t touch his depression.

I currently am experiencing this. I sleep 10 or more hours a day and am super tired all day with no motivation to do anything. This is causing me to be depressed. I have a couple questions. Do you think this is an after effect from psychosis or does it have to do with the antipsychotics (resperadol). What was your taper schedule for this drug. Also how long till you felt better? Currently I am a little over 2 months out of the hospital. I was there for 1 month for psychosis. And lastly did you recover from the depression without antidepressants?
@justbeinghayden9451
@justbeinghayden9451 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your experience. I know what you mean. I also experienced the same kind of thing when I came out of psychosis. It gradually got better over time I can't tell you exactly when the depression lifted since it was gradual, but I would guess that is noticeably eased up for me after 4 months or so? (That was my first one). For me it was not the anti psychotics that were causing it, because I am currently on the same or higher dose than where I was when I came out of psychosis and I have not been experiencing depression or increased sleep, etc. I am only on 0.5 mg of Risperidal. 2 months is still pretty fresh. Remember during psychosis your mind and body are bombarded with different biochemistry, its going to take a while for that to balance out again. I'm not a doctor, but that is my understanding and that was my experience. It is a little different for everybody. Just be patient though and make sure you have people to talk with about how you feel and keep a good health and support network in general. As far as tapering the medication talk to your doctor about that. Be sure to think about why you want to reduce the medication. Medication is not a bad thing its just a tool, but if it is creating negative side effects its worth talking with your doctor about. Like I said I still take medication. I did go off after my first psychosis, but I have chosen to stay on it after the second time. I feel it helps me stay more balanced. You have to decide what is right for you and the people around you, but please do it with your doctor. And yes I did get over my depression without antidepressants, I had a lot of counseling and support from my family and I slowly worked at it day by day :) Hope that helps. Feel free to reach out on Instagram or E-mail if you would like to talk more or schedule a session. Wish you the best! I know it's not easy! Hang in there!

@@H4NFCross Yes. I don't take medication anymore for a year and a half and over time the depression got less and less. It was really strong for the first 6 months. IDK if it is even depression I would describe it as sitting down and not wanting to do anything. Taking a shower brushing teeth doing anything seemed like a huge accomplishment lol. I remember eating at a restaurant on vacation at the Smokey Mountains and getting anxiety and frustration that I couldn't feel any joy or anything positive. I really think the medication makes you feel this way and puts you in a sort of marching like state. Marching through the day with no emotions while trying to feel them. I weened off very slowly with advice that I should at least take the medication for 6 months with no symptoms. I started weening off around 4-5 months and slowely went till about 8 months after I started to 0. I am glad I did and took the leap to not taking the medication and so far that was around April of 2022. I feel a lot better and normal now and started doing the things I used to do like playing poker video games hanging out with friends again. It felt like I was doomed a couple of years ago but so far things got better. It seemed like it wouldn't and was impossible because even after stopping the medication I felt depressed still at first but over time I kind of started to forget the feeling of being a zombie on a march and started to laugh while gaming and went to start playing poker jamming with my friends and etc etc till I eventually started feeling better. Are you asking out of curiosity or are you going through something similar? This was a good video to by the way. This guy responding to my comment was awesome as well.

I had a psychosis break 2 years and 8 months ago and jumped out my 2cnd floor window and sustained serious injuries. I developed ptsd afterwards and Im only slowly getting out of ptsd now. For me, the worst part was how people treated me afterwards and how people still treat me because I had a psychosis break. Psychosis has the worst stigma out of all mental illnesses.

Sounds like an intense experience. I can't imagine having to deal with physical injuries on top of the psychosis. And I agree psychosis is highly stigmatized. I wish it was something that was better understood, which is the hope with some of my videos. Thanks for sharing!

@@justbeinghayden9451 yes being in a bad psychosis on top of breaking 10 bones and collapsing a lung left me with ptsd. It was very traumatising. Its a good thing that you are trying to spread some awareness. My experience with strangers is that as soon as I mention I had psychosis, is that they stop talking to me. As if that doesn't do my head in more than what the trauma already did. I even had friends abandon me because I had psychosis.

Thanks for sharing. The depression took a while for me. I had depression before psychosis and after. It took me a while to work through it all. I had to work on self-esteem and the ability to accept and be myself. It's an ongoing journey, but I would say that my general experience is much more positive than it used to be. I talk about it in my most recent video if you want to check that out. Hope all is well, sorry for the late reply.

@Jeffrey Human My best advice for you would be to look at treatment holistically. Look at counseling, nutrition, medication, excercise, mindfulness practice, support group, support system, etc. The more different angles you approach wellness from the better chance for recovery. And take everything one step at a time, change and healing takes time. Wishing you all the best 🙏

Does the psychosis fully go away? Or is the meds keeping it quite ? I know someone that went through it , will they ever be the same? It’s like they are disconnected at times not able to focus on tasks... is it the meds? Weening off the meds slowly bring on the psychosis..could this be a life time thing for certain ppl??
@justbeinghayden9451
@justbeinghayden9451 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your questions, I'll do my best to answer them to the best of my knowledge. Does psychosis fully go away? It depends. Some people do fully recover from psychosis and do not have any lingering symptoms of psychosis, while other people may have symptoms of psychosis that linger for months, years, or possibly the rest of their lives. I could not find a specific number for recovery rate after a first psychosis but it ranged from 40 to 60% from a variety of sources, I would need to do more research though. Some people have more serious psychotic disorders like schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder which have multiple psychotic episodes that persist over the course of their lifetime. Generally, only 3 out of 100 people experience psychosis in their lives and psychotic disorders, mental health conditions that involve chronic psychotic symptoms, are far less common. Does medication help? Yes, medication does help manage symptoms, but it is not the only thing that needs to be addressed in someone's recovery from psychosis. Some people need to stay on medication their whole lives and others do not, it depends on their situation. Will they ever be the same? When you go through something like psychosis it changes you. They may fully recover and live a normal life, but they will not forget their experiences and what they went through. But if the recover from their experience they could live a normal life and be perfectly functional. There is hope! Disconnection It could be a lot of different things, but yes the meds could have that side effect but so can the psychosis or a number of other things. Talk to your doctor about it if it something you are concerned about they will be able to give you more information. Could life-long medication be a reality? Yes, some people stay on medication their whole lives. But if a medication is not working well for them encourage them to speak with their doctors about finding a medication that might work better for them. It's important to communicate with the doctors about how they are feeling. I hope this helps let me know if you have any other questions.

You‘re describing psychosis as something that has to be overcome. But don‘t you feel that there was something behind those enriching experiences? That the feeling that you understand everything maybe is not so wrong and you just can‘t handle all the bad stuff that is going on in this world from a higher perspective, because you‘ve become so conscious about everything. Maybe it is in fact not a „bad thing“ and medicine just doesn‘t let you be that conscious anymore?!
@justbeinghayden9451
@justbeinghayden9451 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know why my comment got deleted so I'll write it again. Basically I agree with you there is some truth to these experiences, but there are also some big risks and dangers involved. Having people at risk to themselves or others is never a good thing and staying in these states for long periods of time can be very damaging to the brain. Medication is just one tool out of many things to help people live their lives. Some people need it some people don't, but at first it helps people to come down from their experience so they can reintegrate into society. Could treatment be better for these sort of things? Absolutely, there is a lack of listening involved to people who have psychosis and a focus on only medication. Once someone is grounded then they can look back on their experience and some of the positives and lessons they learned, but they need to have a stable worldview in order to do that. I talk about this in my Psychosis or Spiritual Awakening video if you want to check that out. Thanks for the comment.

informal inquiry I absolutely agree that it can be so overwhelming that you can‘t handle yourself at this point of your life anymore. I went through it myself while quarantine started and it was so unbelievably hard to not go crazy. But my intuition was so strong telling me that I have to go through it no matter what, and since I started to surrender to it I realised that everything that happens with me is just my higher self giving me such strong messages my logical brain could not understand. But the moment I realised that these messages are for my best I started to look different at things and it really got better. I started to see that my logical overthinking mind was the reason I suffer and yes I agree that when you are at a point where you can‘t handle the situation anymore medicine may bring you back, but also it really doesn’t bring you forward and this is what your higher self really wants from you. So I guess until you don’t understand the message behind all the stuff that is happening it will continue to come again and again. Thanks for your answer, I also appreciate your engagement on KZfaq. Keep it up!

I had the best time of my life during my psychosis, now after 6 months never been so depressed, there’s something so primitive to it, seems like this modern society is trying to keep us on a certain line which some of us can’t really fit. I felt connected to my spiritual being and everything made sense (even though i had some crazy conspiracy theories I wasn’t breaking any law or whatsoever) we are forced to be on this materialistic world and if you are more sensitive to the “other side” you are put in isolation, to this day I thrive to have those feelings again
