Ajahn Brahm devotes this talk on the Buddhist attitude towards depression. Ajahn breaks this talk into what he believes are the three major causes of depression in our modern world:
1. Inherit negativity and fault-finding
2. Over indulgence in cravings
3. Some of the nature of our existence can be depressing
Ajahn kindly gives us the goods to help us overcome depression; our negative mind states.

Negative thinking is a major cause of my depression. My life sucks, my job sucks. But I have my health, a roof over my head, and I never worry about going hungry. Sometimes just changing our perspective can change things.

I've had depression off and on for years. People could say do this or do that but somehow, Ajahn Braham's examples and maybe the way he teaches, really get the point across. Things like having people tell me, "Be strong", "Pull yourself up", "Don't think about it", "We all get down & out, just get over it", "Don't focus on the negative".....none of that works. I finally realize that it is my focus and I was always worrying about way too much (negative state). I focused on the past with all the bad stuff (negative state)....forgetting all the good (positive state). I see now that was not the way. Thank you Ajahn Brahm.

Four months ago, I befriended someone. The first month was terrific. We had fun when we were together. It was a match made in Heaven. By the second month, he began to criticize me finding faults in everything I did. In the third month, his criticisms were down right abusive. I started seeing him les and less. By the end of the fourth month I terminated our friendship and haven’t spoken to him since. Who needs these kinds if people ... I certainly don’t. So if you want to be my friend, treat me with respect and dignity ... otherwise, get off my boat!!

Concerning the "two bad bricks", it reminds me of a LOGIC 101 professor I had in college. I filled out many boxes (there must have been at least 50 or so), with 48 of my responses being correct. He wound up giving me 80%, which I thought was unfair. For every error, one must (logically) count every correct response as well. So my score should have been 96% because I nailed 48 out of 50. And yes, I could tell (generally) that the professor was extremely negative; he had negative vibes, tending to be quite fault-finding.

I agree. People try harder and harder to change. But what they don't understand is that they first have to let go. Change comes almost naturally then. You still have to put work in but you don't do it anymore to get away from sth. You are just in the moment. If you try to force change, it almost always gets worse.

I'd like to add-(I just saw the part where he talked about fault-finding in modern society) don't underestimate the effects of media and advertising in the fault-finding phenomenon. They unconsciously and perpetually are sending us the message that we are not good enough in order to fuel our desires to buy products.

The thing with Buddhism that I struggle with is that there's all this talk of nibanna, joyful blissful states, jhanas, peace, happiness etc but then youre told you musnt desire any of those things. If youre human then obviously you will desire them. Its a carrot on a stick much like Christianity in the way they tell you that youre not praying hard enough or that your faith isnt strong enough. Personally i have experienced some very mind blowing states meditating but only on retreat and experiencing such states made me want them even more! Its true that we must keep letting go but its a very difficult paradix to grasp especially for the uninitiated.

I still can’t get over my ex who ghosted me because he had depression and put me through terrible stuff like blocking and lies over egg before finally leaving me to sort his stuff out. He is happy with out me now (yeah I gave him so much…) but I just depressed I loved him etc. I didn’t know at the time to get out quick and listening to this amazing monk helps me start to forgive my younger self in her ignorance. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Hopefully I will stop feeling depressed soon.

As Ajahn Brahm states at the beginning of the talk it depends how severe your depression is. I also speak from personal experience and have been meditating for 49 years. No doubt meditation has greatly helped me but without proper medication and treatment from a qualified doctor I probably would not even be alive today. For some more serious depressions professional help is necessary and wiser. If not properly treated serious depression can be fatal and meditating till you turn blue in the face will not be sufficient. Peace my friend...

@MrVoid77: Certain ways of thinking & viewing the world predispose people to depression. As such ways of thinking become habitual, the chances of suffering depression increase. It is best to prevent depression by not getting into such patterns. "The dude there" (Ajahn Brahm) was trying to point out a few such patterns of thought. People with mild depression can hopefully avoid getting severe depression using his ideas. He was not trying to describe some instant cure for depression
