I traveled to Kansas to get this M151A2 "MUTT" Can it be made to run and move under its own power again?

My dad was in Korea in 1967 before going to Vietnam. I have a picture of him somewhere at the Korean DMZ stand beside one of these things. I never knew what it was, just that it wasn’t a jeep with the horizontal grill. The thing I’m most impressed by is that transmission coming back to life! I’d for sure written that off as scrap metal!

And it was totally quiet as well. I was expecting some kind of growling noise due to some rust pitting
@michaelranasinghe37747 ай бұрын
I worked with a old vet that worked on these. He told me alot of the m151 Mutts met their fate at the end of an oxy torch but some were crushed with military dozers. He said they would take these rigs out of storage with 200 hours on the clock and drive them into the shop to be folded up like an accordion by the end of the day.

@@misfittoys8883- It's even more idiotic than that. They did surplus off a fair number of the 1st generation M151s through the DRMO in the 60s, releasing the version most susceptible to roll over. They only mandated destruction of the safer improved M151A2, leaving the unsafe ones on the road. Blithering idiocy. People did reweld them or brought them in from the Philippines or other countries. Also, there was a company in the 90s that made new bodies, using original engines and transmissions plus other NOS parts, assembling and selling new M151s. Parts are still fairly easy to get, as are original whole vics if you hunt around.

I am impressed with how you were able to revive that crusty transmission. Shows how stout old stuff was made and shows the skills that many have forgotten that you still possess. The fact that you were able to make it work
@misfittoys88837 ай бұрын
And it really didnt take as much effort as one would think to get that trans functioning again
@CPthetooladdict6 ай бұрын
If you would have told me that thing would run and drive by the end of the video I would have called you a liar lol I'm impressed this was one of the best revivals on KZfaq! Definitely love to see you make this a wheeling rig!

Old military equipment always fascinated me. I can honestly say I’ve never known what these were. Pretty cool man. I’m impressed that trans freed up.

Man you really put some time and effort into that transmission. With all the rest I'm amazed that it's working, and quite well 👍 you really do some awesome work. Keep it up buddy and looking forward to seeing what becomes of the Mutt 👍✌️🇺🇲

The old beast literally fired right up, that was awesome. I was wondering today on my Lunch break if you were ever going to post again, then magically 2 hours later you release this excellent video.

I really enjoyed this video. You took something that most people wouldn’t even consider but with persistence and not a lot of expense got a vehicle that looks like a lot of fun. It would be a great vehicle to take to car shows as it is , it would get a lot of attention 👍😁🎩

We got one of these at St. John's Military Academy, all original. Man are they cool, and hauls pretty good for the little inline 4 it's got.

My Dad and I completely built a M151A2 from surplus parents my grandfather collected before he passed away. If you have any questions, let me know and we would be happy to help. Great reliable truck.

Awesome man, i just bought an A1 and got it going. i bought some 7.00 x 16 deestone detrack 506 ebay specials for 67 bucks a piece and they really have an agressive old school tread pattern. i found parts easy to find way easier than my unimog 404. you have the good carb with the pressure relief valve going back to tank. so id recommend an amazon 24-12 converter (epbowpt) 12 bucks and a clack clack pump and filter set up. i was going to sell mine but i love it . keep us posted man love the videos and you really showed that tire who is running shit lol. merry christmas
@misfittoys88837 ай бұрын
I have a 404 as well. Parts scarcity and cost have kept me from building it. Parts are definitely out there for these M151's. Some are reasonably priced, but others are scary expensive- like ignition parts. Thats part of the reason why I would like to convert it to 12v

You use your eyecrometer to check straightness of the front axle. You surprised me with that rusty transmission. Cool video 👍🇺🇸✌️

Man, i would love to see your channel get as big as you want it to be. You make great videos now and I would love to see what you would do on a bigger scale. That little thing had some snort to it, pretty impressive. Very cool to see you get the transmission going again. A little set of swampers or tractor lugs and maybe a way to soften the suspension a bit and locked up, that thing would climb trees.
@misfittoys88837 ай бұрын
We will find out sometime in the future. Now that I have it running and evaluated, I will start collecting stuff for the build

It helps if you get the fuel in the carb or better yet get the carb off and cleaned with a gravity fed gas tank!

Got my first military driver's license on the M151. Somehow, I managed to pass the part of the test where we had to do a reverse serpentine course with the 1/4 ton trailer!
@misfittoys88837 ай бұрын
That test sounds challenging. How tight were the turns and was there a time limit?
@willscott857 ай бұрын
Looks fun bud, would be a fun little project, just to show that you don't "need" solid axles too go out and have a good time.
@misfittoys88837 ай бұрын
Or big tires. A good spotter definitely gets more important though.
@allensnook77607 ай бұрын
Must have open differentials because i noticed when u got hung up some tires were just hanging out in air not turning.if you could put lockers or weldup spiders to make it permanant lock driveshaft then better tires and bobs ur uncle.
@misfittoys88837 ай бұрын
Yes, open diffs. I think the tires were holding it back more than the open diffs though.
@jimschafer91967 ай бұрын
Well that was quite the revival project, great content on how too - I would have used some of the newer rust destroyer with diesel fuel. It would be interesting after the run through in the world famous "Misfit Toys Proving Grounds" how the gears looked after the supreme load testing. LOL
@misfittoys88837 ай бұрын
That is a great idea. When I get down to building it as a true wheeling rig, I will pull the top off the trans again to see how well the gears cleaned up due to being ran.
@mikewilliams20727 ай бұрын
I see you are testing the axel you welded back together!
@misfittoys88837 ай бұрын
The axle repair was always on my mind when wheeling it!
@craigbowley67836 ай бұрын
It would work a whole lot better if you cleaned up the teeth on the gears and the moving parts in the housing with a wire wheel then sprayed it down with actual penatrating oil. ( WD 40 isn't penatrating oil. ) PB blaster or kroil 👌🇺🇸
@misfittoys88836 ай бұрын
Was using what I happened to have on hand because I was very skeptical it was going to work out anyway. Really coulnt have worked better anyway. Trans worked just fine and didnt even make any noise either.
@mikewilliams20727 ай бұрын
If you are bound and determined to break something you are doing a good job seems to me!!!

timeing out or a vacume leak is probably whats causeing the backfires. there r parts for mutts quite freely available from germany and denmark ,but sometimes its cheaper useing u.s ebay for used or n.o.stock
@mikewilliams20727 ай бұрын
With the way it is backfiring might want to check for vacuum leak or may be timing issue!!

What are you trying to do it's a 4x4 not a logging skidder! Just sitting there and burning the tire down is smart , it will burn down or break, give her hell!!!!

For the Ford 300 straight six in it
@misfittoys88837 ай бұрын
That would be a chore getting that long of an engine in it!! Honestly, the people that engineered it did a great job in my opinion. The 4 popper in it does a great job with the axle gearing and the weight of rig

I'd like one for a sidexside. Change the tires, a good cage, and a hunting we will go.
