You completely nailed it. Very observant of you. He kept saying "fall" in the exact ways that you described. I noticed it too. Then when he touches the student first, he sets the anchor of physical contact to the stomach. Then when he backs away, he's reassuring the student that he can still feel it because the student is already in that mental state (as you have already revealed). Then when behind him, the student can still hear him make the swinging motion, however subtle. My opinion.

Brilliant demonstration, i do believe he chose kung fu students for a reason, the chances of choosing some susceptible to these "techniques" are much greater in this environment (due to the teaching of "QI" or "CHI" within the arts foundation). You can find many other demonstrations like this, most are in the martial arts and are always demonstrated on the masters own students or on students within the art. Darren is not trying to debunk the one inch punch, its a proven skill.

To all that don't understand, the reason why it works is because the person the move is being performed on 'thinks' that these people have superhuman powers to knock someone out with a 1 inch punch or a 'force'. In Derren's case, the guy he used had preconceived ideas in his mind that Derren would be able to knock him down using a force, therefore when Derren gestured that he was outputting this force, the guy responded in pain. It's all in the mind.

The one inch punch is a pretty extreme example of this. Also worth noting is that the distance traveled by his fist prior to impact is hardly "one inch." A more appropriate name might be the "no hip push." It's worth noting that certain schools of karate are actually very keenly aware of the importance of "penetrating" rather than "pushing" strikes, but people keep putting importance on circus tricks rather than sound fighting methods.

I've only come across Derren Brown in the last week or so and I'm fascinated. I've seen different views on how he does his act. It seems even he admits that sometimes he pretends he's doing some kind of suggestion but isn't. I think that's a mistake. If at times he *is* achieving his effects through suggestion or subliminal techniques etc.,and sometimes he pretends to (and either stages it, or uses a more conventional "trick," ) then he casts suspicion on the times he is genuinely doing it.

I really wonder how he gets in their mind like that, especially to the point where he can knock a person down without facing them. He's on another level with mentalism. #derrenbrown #kungfu #students #mentalism

1 inch punch does not involve elbow-shoulder dynamics and is typically performed within few INCHES, preferably 1.
@PhobiaGuy
@PhobiaGuy 12 жыл бұрын
@lilogden because the first guy does a punch, derren has the next guy expecting something similar. He builds tension "can you feel that?" (suggestion that there is some force to be felt) derren throws the punch and in the guys mind, he receives derrens 'impact'. Derren takes in a breath as he is about to 'punch', therefore the behind one is part sound of movement, and he punches after his breath. It's suggestion. Try pretend punching someone but pull short the punch, they will crumple up too!

Derren typically picks the more suggestible people from a crowd; he has techniques to decipher who is the most susceptible to suggestion and uses them. Further more, it has been widely agreed that hypnosis in front of a TV camera or an audience is more effective than a one on one session as the audience acts as a peer group that pressurises the volunteer to conform in ways they normally wouldn't. In this case the audience expects one to be hypnotised and that pressurises people into it more.

If I may interrupt, Derren did an interivew on a programme called "Frost Over The World", and the interviewer volunteered for one of Derren's tricks. Derren asked him to think of an object, and Derren didn't get it spot on. The interviewer told him so, but the next try, he got it spot on. People do 'take the fun out of it' sometimes, much like when he payed for stuff with fake money. One of the guys caught him out when he tried to pay for a hotdog, so it kind of proves it isn't staged.

to me it seems more like combination of anchoring and nlp. the "can you feel this" anchors the point where the punch will land, and programs the target to "feel" his touch even when there's no physical contact. also, the master's showcase is, as you say, a "template" for the expected effect. ...but how could the target respond when hit from behind,I have no idea to this day... probably by hearing derren's hand moving? or the delay would suggest he actually felt a burst of air from the movement?

This Wing Chun guy isn't really doing a strict one inch punch per say, and the response of the person being punched looked a little fake too, the falling over part wasn't natural. As for people comparing this to the famous Bruce Lee one inch punch, sure he had less distance but one need to also realize that the person being punched was standing with 2 feet under the shoulders in a left to right fashion, not front and back, which means there are no support against a force pushing the person back which is why the person fell over, just try pushing a friend standing like that lightly and you will see how easy it is to fall over. As for Derren Brown's demo its very impressive indeed.

Ive seen this video alot and this time when i watched It i finally understand what derren did. Hypnotism, the master does a display of a punch, you watch the guy get hit. Then derren gets a student. He does 3 hypnotic suggestions. The handshake, positioning the persons body and the shoulder rest. He has done many vid before when he puts someone under that will react to someone moving from behind them. Notice he imitates the masters punch even so his mind thinks it has the same effect.

Could be, but I don't think so. It sure doesn't look like it to me. An avalanche can knock down trees before it contacts them--a shock wave of compressed air builds up in front of the wall of moving snow, and it is the air that knocks down the trees. I think it's just the shock wave of his fist that puts out the candle. I can't do it, but I don't find it that impressive.

when he comes in hes says "fank you, fank you" then a little he says "you folunteered to get hit" then "fank you for falunteering", this serves as some sort of trigger to set off his trick when he then says "can you feel this?". also i think he asked the teacher to show him his technique so that would set an anchor in the students mind, and letting him CHOOSE the student, this would associate the punch with the master, thus the mind trick. i think thats what happens here but im cant be SURE !

isnt the point of what he's doing is that it's all in the individual's mind? so if the participant hears derren's movement behind them, then they're going to react because the punch is created in their subconscious from what they heard. derren is just very good at the art suggestion. doesn't mean it's fake.

To all the kids screaming fake. Derren Brown uses many techniques, but has never done tricks on actors. When he speaks he uses suggestion, making sure everyone has the idea in their head, then they have to do what he wants because it's impossible for them not to. This technique makes people think of the animal he wants them to, makes people hide a coin in the hand he wants them to, and, in this case, react how he wants them to. I wouldn't be surprised if before this scene Derren gave a speech, convincing everyone how powerful and dangerous some (mythical) martial arts techniques are. I bet when the students applied Derrens team made them fill out all sorts of unnecessary forms so by the time the students were in the class, they were convinced something borderline supernatural would happen, and in that way, they all made it happen. EDIT: Furthermore, the one inch punch part COULD be staged by Derren, both participants being actors. Derren would then use this example to convince the student to feel pain when there was none. Derren has used actors in this way before, to further convince a real audience.

I just watched the video again to see if you had a point. I saw that the guy the instructor chose(he didn't call him with his name though which is weird) was in the start of the video doing some kungfu moves, and the reason Derren laughed was because he said ''thanks for volunteering'' as a joke, cause he didn't, he was picked by the instructor. So your argument is invalid.

It's likely, that he DID hypnotise him. However, if he did, it happened ON the video (look up "handshake induction", it's not precisely that, but it will show you there are extremely quick, effective (and unexpected) ways to hypnotise people). However, I think not much hypnosis was involved, to me it seems to be more about anchoring and NLP.
