Since his television debut with Derren Brown: Mind Control in 2000 he’s produced multiple series and specials, winning two Laurence Olivier Awards. I think Derren must be so clever. I would guess that most of his tricks involve being able to subtly alter the social expectations of people in a room. Like, people in a group generally want to be agreeable, professional, understanding, friendly etc. He can play on these expectations to predict what a person might do next. He would also have an excellent memory and be able to know just enough about someone to make them think he knew everything. I expect he alternates between cold reading and hot reading so fast it's hard to figure out which is which. I wonder if he'd find it harder to work with people who have social disabilities/disorders. I think that psychics, etc could definitely learn how to do all of these techniques, but it's a hard skill and most of them aren't that clever! Derren's not magic, he's skilled, and it's even more impressive!

Think the "which hand" game was done genuinely, there's a psychological aspect to it as well as the air moving as the "test subjects" raises their hands in an implied quick and mannered fasion. Note "test subjects" and that the conditions are controlled. You can look up your "test subjects" beforehand with minimal effort. That he got it "wrong" was probably part of the trick just to lead to the last part where he read up the "test subjects" own blog or what have you, aloud. How he identified him - might've been the watch?

@@counterfeit1148 No. At 00:58 Derren is talking about the healer (him) "... and all the healer had to do was say if he thought the girl's hand was above his left hand or his right hand". So the R and L clearly relate to the "healer's" hand (Derren's). And at 1:30, Derren says, "Now I wriggled my right hand on purpose..." and that was the hand in the hole with the R over it. So, there can be no argument that the R and L relate to Derren's Right and Left hands.

I believe what he was saying about his guesses was true for the first part, but when he got one wrong he did it on purpose. He'd memorised some facts about that one guy and knew when he would step up in the line. Still really impressive!

Hey, it’s just a THEORY, not saying it is the case. IF, I mean IF, it was entirely scripted with paid actors OR with any smart device of communication like those used to cheat in casinos, the exact same can be achieved. That’s the elephant in the room explanation - but people find ways to deny themselves of an answer.

seems like a repeat of the race horse betting trick...i.e. he has done this with multiple groups and different researchers (whilst using some pattern predictability to minimise wrong guesses as much as possible) until he achieve a favourable enough result, and then presenting this instance to those present and the audience as being the only instance...with the awkward ending of "i can guess all about you" being a simple research on all the participants and remembering a few keys points about each

Possible I suppose but I don't think it was the case. That system can work well with a large number of single people but soon becomes very unwieldy with a similarly large number of groups of people as he has here. The research and remembering of details on each of the people would work ... if he had a way of discovering which of the six males he was actually touching.

@@grahamyates2490 but pattern/human predictability helps tons in this particular instance, it's worlds away from the type of randomness of flipping a coin or race horse betting, so i don't think it's unmanageable. because in fact each group that gets "tested" (probably not even by derren brown at first) will accumulate data which can then be used to find which pattern is the most popular/likely when the exact same dialog is performed every single time to the participants. then derren tries the most popular pattern and repeats the same dialog with more groups until a good enough result comes out figuring out which participant is which, is fairly simple (as well as optional, since he didn't say he'd do that and therefore could just omit it if unsure). he just has to observe their hands earlier at the lobby/reception (in person or just get staff video footage) when they first turn up to fill in participant paperwork and wait for everyone to be there/ready and for the show/trick to actually start, then memory "male big hands = joe, male skinny hands = tom, male two rings = sam etc"

Hello Derren…utterly fascinating! I know you probably already know this? Entanglement is what Einstein referred to as "spooky action at a distance." It's a phenomenon by which one particle can effectively "know" something about another particle instantaneously, even if those two particles are separated by a great distance. Since Einstein we’ve discovered (not me) that particles don’t exist, that everything is energy. So in theory based on what I understand to be true about psychics and your abilities of mind…? I would hypothesize that you could expect the same results no matter what the distance?
