We have plenty of sunshine though, so this little trick will come in handy. We keep refigerators on generator so there will be ice! Your videos are awesome! I was acctually thinking of doing some of your "projects" with my 10 year old. He loves all the survival/prep stuff.

Very Smart. I recommend also adding salt to the water bottles because it will freeze colder and stay frozen longer.

Fuck you for this advice, my water didnt freeze over night because of you : when salt is added to your ice it will melt earlier because it's melting temperature is lower. This means salt ice won't stay frozen as long as regular water ice.

Jeff Myers I'm a roofer and at roofing supply stores they sell stirafom (for a cricket system )that redirects the water to the drains.Im not going to get too technical but they have inso that is 12 inches thick (1/4"to12"+)I'm sure you can think of something to make out of that. I've made whole coolers out of it. A cold beer is nice to have after a hard day on the roof.

Salt Water has a lower freezing point. Hence salt ice is colder and thus takes a little longer to melt. If I did this, I would full it with salt ice every time.

Dave XB Salt water ice does not take longer to melt because it does not take more energy to melt. Adding salt to water will lower the freezing point, which will cause it to absorb more energy from a certain temperature air, which will cause it to melt faster. The air coming out of the ice chest will be cooler but the ice will melt faster.

So, Barbara, I just wanted to know if this thing would really work and I think according to your comment that is does. Thank you. I will try with a cheaper styrofoam cooler from the dollar store and a fan that plugs into usb in my car in Florida with an a/c that blows hot air!

@@AppAccess123 good point i hadn't noticed that. i'm sure there's some way to remedy this at least by doing something like laying down a tarp and/or using desiccant beads in the general area also it seems like he had his running mostly on uncovered ice but he suggests using closed bottles as well which would probably reduce the amount of residual condensation desiccant beads + closed water bottles + tarp, would probably = much lower condensation

+Luke Lionheart This is not a swamp cooler. A swamp cooler only works in dry environments with low humidity. Swamp coolers run dry air over cooler water to lower the temp. If you live some place where the humidity is 60% + then running the air over water only makes it hotter. He is running the air over a block of ice, so the ice will actually condense some of the humidity back into water which means this setup will work in either a humid or non humid environment. I only comment because I live in South Florida and I hate the heat!!! I have probably researched every method possible to keep cool in the summer. South Florida summers are like northern winters... We board everything up and try not to go outside if possible.

Adding salt to the ice chest will make the ice melt faster, not slower. This actually will make the air coming out colder but at the expense of making the ice last less long. Adding salt to the ice (salt ice cube) will allow the ice to absorb more heat, but a smaller amount of ice with salt, or a larger amount of ice with no salt. Same cost. Think in terms of physics. The salt will basically allow you to have a smaller cooler. To use less ice for a given amount of cooling. But it will not save money.

hi. i've done that before. it works great when the humidity is below 50 or 60%. another trick is to use a 'chill its' evap cooling towel. start by putting a small desk fan next to the bed blowing on you. then take the cooling towel, wet it down and lay it over you. the air from the fan hits the towel and evap cooling takes place. you can get super cool doing that. often i will get so cold that i have to place a sheet or light blanket between me and the towel because the towel gets so cold it's ridiculous. the good thing about using a chill'its evap cooling towel is that you and the blanket stay totally dry. the water stays in the towel and will not get you or the blanket wet at all. the towel can stay wet 3 or 4 hours at a time. i just wish they made full body cooling towels.

David Battle Yep. Scanned the replies and you beat me to it. Most people don't realize that in order to freeze the water bottle, the heat is *removed* (not cold added). The removed heat is pumped into the room that the freezer is in, plus the heat that the freezer generates to perform this. The only way to benefit from this type of air cooler is to have the freezer out of the cooled area.

Some lose 1.5% in temps above 32 C/90 F and increase 1.5% for every increase of 1 Celsius. At 32 C the loss of a 15W cell would be a staggering 0.225W, at 37C / 100 F would be a loss of 1.125W. The better ones don't start losing their efficiency until 35C. So there you go, you may weep now.

Not nearly as well. The tinsel protects the cool air from gamma radiation. So the air stays cooler for longer. It is a key feature of this invention.

Maybe use 2 or 3 smaller PVC pipes for outflow. One directed at the fan intake and the other 1 or 2 directed out into the room. Yes it would reduce the amount of cold air going out but the ice would melt slower because of the cold air intake. You might get around that by using a slightly stronger fan. That's just a thought. I'm going to try making one of these and test my idea. I love the general idea. Thank you!
