Support the channel and buy my ultimate Desi Delhi food guide here: maxmcfarlin.gumroad.com/l/24h... 🇮🇳 After staying in Paharganj for 2 nights, I wanted to switch it up and try staying in a different part of Delhi. So I checked out of my hotel and hopped on the metro to return to a place oh so familiar to me - Lajpat Nagar.
This time in Lajpat Nagar I booked a hotel room at a place by the name of FabHotel F9. I paid around $35 USD for the hotel which isn't crazy expensive, but it's kind of a sketchy place. I booked it on Booking.com, which typically either asks you to pay in advance, or doesn't require it if the hotel sets up their profile in such a way on the Booking.com site. But this hotel does it differently. They allow you to book a hotel on Booking.com with no payment, and then send you an email saying your reservation is "temporarily reserved", and that you can fully reserve it by paying. I opted to just show up and see if the room was still available, which luckily it was.
The people were fairly nice upon checkin, but the room was pretty dirty. Grimy floors, opened water bottle, disgusting kitchen. Bathroom wasn't half bad, but not ideal. Definitely don't think it was up to par for $35 a night. But it would work for the next few nights.
After checking in and resting, I went down to the central market in Lajpat Nagar to try some foods and drinks. It was extremely crowded, and since I had everything in my pockets, I opted to buy a small sling bag to put everything in so I wouldn't have to worry so much about pitpocketers. I got a fake Nike one for 200 INR, or roughly $2.40 USD.
After that, I wandered around looking for drinks. It was really hot on this day so I had to try 2-3 drinks to get myself rehydrated. I had a lemon drink and a coconut, which were both good and had friendly people.
After the drinks, I was ready for some food, and so I walked back towards the entrance of the market where I saw a giant crowd of people standing around a momo shop called "Dolma Aunty Momos". This is the same shop the nice people at the store that sold me the Coke the other day recommended.
It was busy, but the workers were patient and friendly with me. I opted to try the paneer steamed momo. They were honestly really dry and just coming out of a pot that had probably been sitting for a while. Not good. My friend Max said he got there early to try them, and they were much better, so if you want to eat them, plan on getting there earlier.
While eating, a young child came up asking for help. Honestly guys, I really struggle with whether or not to film and post these interactions, but in the end this is my job, and this is the reality of traveling. I rarely give money to people who come up asking me, and instead opt to give them fresh food they can buy. The kid was fairly nice, but there were some red flags that kept me on alert, such as the fact that he wanted me to buy chocolate from a certain stall. This is a common trick people use to get money. They have you buy stuff from a stall they are connected to, and then return the product after you leave and split the money with the shop owner. Anyways, that's why I always opt for fresh food they have to eat. If someone's hungry I have no problem helping out and feeding them.
Unfortunately after feeding him, he kept following me and started asking me for money, just about anything he thought I would get for him. I had to start being a bit firm and tell him to leave. Not everyone is like this, and obviously he's just a kid in a tough situation, but this is the reality of these situations. You do your best to help, and that's all you can do.

See, according to census and data, even the "poor" in the city donot represent how real poor people live in India. In cities, the poor are lazy, arrogant people. You shouldn't help them. Delhi is one of the largest cities in the world, they have everything they need yet they choose to beg. If you really want to help poor people in India, visit states like Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odishha etc. They work hard that's why they are satisfied with their life even if they are poor. And so, when you help them, they are grateful. This kid needs to go to school. Delhi has free school education, free food at school...Don't spend a single penny on them, not even on food.

I am Indian/American and living in California USA. We also have the same experience when we visit in India.I do help poor people who work hard and don't begg.One thing is bothering me that everyone is calling this "annoying kid" poor people.They are not poor but they choose to beg.This annoying kid maybe 11 years old and already begging and may be That's what he is gonna do for rest of his life, because he is not in the school where high school Education is free with free food. Man selling coconut is working 15 hours a day, and he came from Bihar to work. That's what poor people do. They work hard and don't beg and are satisfied with their earnings. "Auto rikshaw" man, Chris gave him 200 rupees, and his face lit up after getting 200 rupees instead of 70, and he came from outer state to work.I think he deserves 200 rupees because he is working hard. Poor people are working hard 12 to 15 hours a day. This annoying kid was also ungrateful eventhogh Chris paid for his paneer roti and lassi, and didn't say thanks but kept saying that you didn't help me because he was aspecting cash.Chris was smart enough to not to go with him. Visitors feel so frustrated when these beggers follow you long period of time.

This happened to me one time. Two girls were selling pen and they were in need. I purchased a pen for 4 times the price to help one girl but then next girl also started using the same tactic to sell me another pen. I told her humbly that I cannot buy another pen so she abused me verbally in public even though I had helped her friend. I walked minding my own business. I thought may be it was best not to help poor people but I just shrugged it off. I think helping poor people is a good thing but we should also be ready for some bad experiences and whenever it happens just shrug it off. That kid put a bit of a dampener on your whole experience there, and he didnt look particularly sad about it either, he was laughing about it as if it was some sort of game he was playing to extract money from you, and if you did give him money, would he have gone away? I doubt it.
@Krakaet

The sad reality is that it becomes a form of "art" for them as opposed to legitimately wanting a stranger's help. Like you said, they look to extract as much as you can. It's difficult when you're a foreigner in a different country with a very different culture: you don't necessarily want to make a scene because then you'll look like the mean ugly American who is accosting a local kid. However, when someone has been told NO and they keep persisting, then I think it is universal to have to get angry with them and tell them more directly to get the hell away from you. In New York, I can tell you firsthand that 95% of us do NOT engage and just keep walking.

Dude Chris, just avoid these beggar/nagging folks bothering you. Just ignore them completely, if you utter a single word, they'll click onto you and hassle you. If they do not go away even after ignoring then shout at them and make a little scene, they'll scram. Don't let them take advantage of your goodness. That kid looked like a thoroughbred swindler.

This is what I have observed there are some good people among well off and some bad people among poor ones. Poverty is not a hallmark of humbleness or simplicity neither affluence is hallmark of arrogance. It’s better we understand human nature without putting on the lens of seeing them as poor of rich. Chris be safe be attentive 😉

Thank you for showing an omnipresent slice of ordinary interaction on many streets of India. Unlike anywhere else in the world, India challenge the traveler to confront the contradictions and failure of modern economic and social development. It does this on a spectacularly personal level, challenging us to examine not only who we are as humans, but the state of the world for others. Here, the impulse was to treat this kid with kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness. But where there are blatant inequities, a struggle for financial solvency and a future with no social or economic mobility, other rules apply. And who can blame them? I used to think that global travel, international social media and the internet would help. But no, globalization has has had a mixed record. Travelers from wealthy nations, especially white skinned travelers, face the contradictions and moral hazards of travel, especially in India. I, like Chris, love to travel and reach out to everyone, but I also try to be mindful of the fact that I am one of thousands alien passengers, to be fed, entertained and enjoyed, but in the end, forgotten in the parade of the next one in ine. I think the best way to help others is to allow India to put a mirror to yourself, your behavior, and how best to be a mindful visitor. The depressing and sad truth is, that there are economic, class, cultural and societal hurdles far too challenging for visitors. . So travelers will learn this lesson while maintaining their own norms. I shall always love India for its sights, hospitality, food and culture. But most of all India can be a personal journey of self awareness, of a lesson uncomfortable truths, and for many, a unique spiritual escape.

Anyway you keep going, see I know English, but you can speak Hindi way better than I speak English, I live here in New Zealand, I am from India, and Have you visited Gujarat western state of India?Do visit sometime, we Gujarati people are also so down to earth, I am sure you would feel a lifetime memorable experience,
