I love how you used 3d to make sure you had the perspective nailed. There are a lot of artists and teachers who believe that using 3d is cheating, but I think its just another great tool. Like you said, since the perspective and proportion are already nailed it gives you more time to focus on the design, details, and eventually color. I used 3d while doing my drawings as well since i started my art career doing wood sculpture. Even before I picked up 3d software i used to care a rough shape from wood or clay and take pictures. You can say its cheating all you want, but I feel its just efficient and allows for greater focus on things that matter like design. Imagine if you had to spend hours trying to free hand those tentacles, and make sure it had correct proportion and perspective. To me using 3d is like using a calculator in math. Yes its good to know the basics but eventually the device just makes more sense.
@Montinovich
@Montinovich 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Who exactly benefits from spending hours and hours drawing out something meticulous when there is a faster way to do it? Especially in a production it's the final result that matters, and while it's always best that you don't rely on 3D etc to skip learning the fundamentals, it's up to you to decide if you're doing something to learn or to get to a result and there is no such thing as cheating in my mind except for straight up stealing and copying someone else's work of course. There is no art police that will come and arrest anyone ^^
@DrDemolition
@DrDemolition 2 жыл бұрын
How is that cheating 🤣 It's quite an incredible tool and I never would've thought of combining 3d to make 2d look amazing quickly if it wasn't for Morten! It's similar to when some people say programmers who use google are cheaters 😭

If you're a beginner, learn how to draw manual perspective first and learn the 3d programs second. Studios are aware that some artists go straight to learning 3d before learning the fundamentals, saw a couple of 'em botched the skill tests cause they don't know how to draw complicated objects in perspective, doesn't know how camera lenses, angles work etc. Having knowledge on manual perspective will greatly increase your knowledge in using 3d softwares. Good luck on what you want to pursue.

Thank you so much! For this project I kinda just decided on a general theme and didn't put too many rules and restrictions on myself. Unless there is something really specific that you are trying to achieve I think it's really important to keep it open and let yourself have fun and explore. Other than that I pretty much did like in the video and looked at a ton of references and made some thoughts before even starting any drawing. I would think of broad things like where is the city located, what type of weather do they have, what do the citizens do everyday, what kind of society do they have etc.. and for more specific things I love to make lists, like what kind of fish can I think of to take design elements from, what items could they have in their house, what are the materials they would have access too etc. Its a balance between how broad and specific you wanna get. Hope that helps!

How do you come up with just the black shadows from the final render image? i didn't understand that part
@Montinovich
@Montinovich 2 жыл бұрын
In blender, if you go under renderpasses, make sure that "shadow" is turned on, and then render out in multilayer EXR format. You can then open that render in photoshop with the free plugin Exr-io, and there you will have a layer with each render pass including the shadow pass which you can then copy over in your working file and manipulate how you want :) hope that made sort of sense! You can also preview the shadow render pass in the blender viewport and do a render of just that pass and save out

Hey really great and intriquit video I personally like to come up with my ideas through brain storming in the beginning, I have my drawing Tablett for a entirety of 6 days and I am an aspiring Artist so you think it is necessary to use references or 3D Modeling?
@Montinovich
@Montinovich 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! References are super important to use, it only helps make designs more interesting and believable. 3D depends, if you are starting out, just focus on drawing and learning the fundamentals first, and then play a bit with 3d as you go and learn where it can make your life easier, such as blocking a scene in to get quick perspective. But the dangerous thing is when you rely on 3D too much and use it as an "excuse" to not learn the basics, so just keep an eye out for that! If you learn how the different techniques can complement each other it can be very powerful!

@@test4fun118 You mean if I could do a video? That's a good idea actually, I haven't thought about that but that is definitely something that I could do in the future maybe!

are you using tablet with stylus for blender work?

Sometimes, but mostly I prefer using keyboard+mouse for Blender. I use stylus for any sculpting and sometimes for weight painting etc.

Dear Morten. I would like to ask a favor from you. Can you do a disco elysium interior drawing, blender to photoshop. Like the hotel room Hanry wakes up in the game. They used several techniques including special shadow pass in blender and applied that to their painterly style. I practically begging you since your style quite close what they achieved in their game
