This video is geared toward the person who has never worked with CAD or CAM in the Vectric Software before.
In this video, I’ll show you how to design and calculate the toolpaths to create a custom monogram wall hanging in VCarve Desktop, VCarve Pro, and Aspire.
I’ll show you how I laid out the outside dimensions of the project, then added text, along with a couple of other design elements. Then with that artwork created, I’ll show you how to use just one tool to trim and close the various vectors. We’ll get into how to go about trimming those vectors, some things to watch out for, and an easy way to decide which vectors to trim, and which to leave alone. Then we’ll Calculate the toolpaths, and Preview them all. I’ll show you a few things to watch out for when calculating those toolpaths. You’ll quickly see that it’s not as difficult to design a monogram wall hanging of your own as you may have thought.

Mark another home run. thanks for clarifying this procedure so well. I followed along step by step and ran into open vectors along the way. i looked back through the steps and of course there were trim cuts that I missed in some very small areas. But your great advice to take it slow and zoom way in and go one letter/area at a time made all the difference! I hope to get the piece run today. I think it will make my wife happy... thank you again for all you do for the cnc community.

Made your monogram project. Great instructions, thanks. Had to make it half size because I was unable to locate 25" x25"x1/4" stock. Care to share your source?

Thank you! Glad it turned out good for you. I use 1/4 inch thick plywood from my local hardwood supplier, and cut the sheets to size on my table saw. Thy regularly carry birch, maple, and cherry plywood in that thickness, and I pick it up as I need it.

Save that vector for later, do all you can, then close the trim tool. Select the vector that won't trim and go into Node Editing. Right click along the vector and select Delete Span. That should take care of it. Thanks for checking out the video!

Mark: doing the inside profile with a 1/16" em for that large a project is really stressful for that em. Wouldn't it be better to perform the inside cut with a 1/8"em and then do a last pass with the 1/16" em /

You could certainly do that - it's totally up to you. If you go for a shallow depth of cut per pass and watch your feed rate, it'll be fine.

It's designed to use 1/4 inch thick hardwood plywood. I usually use birch, but maple (or any other hardwood plywood for that matter,) would look just as nice.

Hi mark great video, sometimes when I make this and I got to pocket it says I have open contours and the vectors aren’t joined but than I go to join open vectors and it doesn’t show any. Why would this be? Thanks

They are most likely grouped, but not joined. You'll have to ungroup those vectors, join them, then group them again. I did a video on this a while back. Here's a link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mr1zZLSW2K7IpYk.html

Great video. Is there a simple way to use a 1/4" endmill to cut the majority of the waste and then profile with the 1/16" bit? Or would you have to make 2 separate toolpaths and just let the software decide where the 1/4" bit won't fit?

You would have to create 2 toolpaths to do that, unless you used a pocket toolpath. That would take longer than just using the smaller bit to begin with.

Great video as always and thanks.I have a question I know will be tough without seeing but,I did 2 monograms the same and on each one I can't trim out a line in 2 different spots which will not let me close out all the vectors.

Mark, another very informative video. I just have a couple of questions, what material are you cutting, and will a 1/16" bit with a 3/16" LOC as per your amazon link cut through the material. Again, keep up the great videos you provide. Thanks

Good eye! I got the wrong bit - oops... Technically, it will cut through 1/4 inch material because of the geometry, but it's better to have at least 1/4" LOC. I'll get that link fixed. Thank you!

My project is brass sheet, 1/64” thick, from which pieces are cut out, much like yours. But the design needs sharp inside corners, so I planned to try a 30 degree V bit that has a 0.005” tip. Are there better ways? Advice?

Mark one question When you use the painters tape and ca glue what do you add to the depth of cut to account for the thickness of the glue.and tape. Also cover all of the tape with glue it the monogram you just did. Jeff

No, I don't add to the depth. I already go .005 deeper than the material thickness. It's not necessary to go any deeper. I also don't cover the entire back with tape - you'd never get it off the table without breaking it. I use 1 piece in the center, another piece about half way between the center and the outer edge (both top and bottom) and another piece along the top and bottom edge. Thanks, Jeff!

great videos. very helpful. but im struggling with the polyline tool. im trying the monogram in aspire but keep getting issues when i create offsets of the lines i create. when i do the double offset of a line it joins the lines at one end with a half circle. hope this makes sense. id love to show you a pic but cant upload one here.

Hmmm... I've not had that happen. You may have to offset to the outside, then the inside separately. Also, shoot an email to Vectric Support and tell them about it. It may be an issue they're not aware of.

Great tutorial Mark. I followed along using my name and everything worked out except when I went to clear the scrap areas after carving. When I double click on one piece most of the remaining letters disappear. The section that causes the problem appears to have closed vectors, so I'm stuck. Is there any way I could email the file to you for some help? Thanks Roger

This doesn't have anything to do with your vectors. If the preview cut otherwise looked fine, the issue is in the Preview Window itself. Sometimes you have to zoom in real close on a waste piece before double clicking on it. This is especially true of it's a very small piece. I'll mention it in this Sunday's video, as I'll be sharing some Preview Window tips and tricks.

i FOLLOWED THE VIDEO BUT WHEN I WENT TO CREATE A TOOL PATH I GOT A MESSAGE THAT IT HAVE OPEN CONTOURS IN SEPARTE GROUPS THAT MUST BE JOINED WITH THE JOIN FORM

Ungroup the vectors, join them, then regroup them.

I’m stuck on the font. I downloaded it, but it does not show up on available fonts when I click the drop down menu

You have to install the font. Navigate to where you downloaded it to, right click it, and click INSTALL. You might have to restart VCarve or Aspire to see it.

I'm having trouble with mine, while cutting the profile of part of the name it isn't cutting in the correct place. Vcarve is showing the toolpath as going on the correct path in the preview but it isn't. It is cutttng high under the LIN as if both lines under those letters are the same line, but on the following letters it cuts correctly.

It sounds like there's still an open vector in that area. Do a Box Select from Left to Right along that vector and see if anything gets highlighted. If so, delete it or join it to create a closed vector, then recalculate the toolpath and Preview.

Hey. I just followed this tutorial and it was great. I have run into one problem. When I do the inside toolpath it says there is an open vector but when I check for open it doesn't say there is one. If I ungroup them and look for open ones it shows up but the Join button isn't highlighted. It is grayed out. How do I get this vector to be apart of the others. I can't zoom in far enough to find it.

Edit: I found it by hitting the join open vectors button in draw part but now when I go to punch out the cut out parts it makes over half of the picture disappear. I am curious why that may be happening.

Look for overlaps. What I mean is, look for areas where vectors may be laying on top of one another. Select one of those open vectors and type N on the keyboard to go into Node Editing mode. Identify the end points of that vector, then select the vector you're trying to join it to. You may have to move those end points so that they're on top of one another. Then you can join them.

Off topic question. VcarvePro 8.5 has a utility named “do separate last pass” and you specify how much to take off and if you want to go in a reverse direction. I tried several different amounts to remove thinking there may be a certain amount it is looking for. . However I have have never been able to activate it, and yes I do check the box. What’s the trick to get it to work? Thanks

There's no trick to activating Separate Last Pass, other than checking the box. I use it all the time to remove the step marks left behind when cutting through the material. You do have to be making multiple passes to cut through the material, however. If you're cutting through the material in a single pass, there is no "last pass."

Hi Mark, I've been enjoying your videos as a "sort of newbee" and working along as I begin my Aspire learning curve. Following along on this video and I got to the Tool pathing, and previewed The Monogram Toolpath. Following your lead I double clicked on the Drops, but them most of the preview disappeared. As I attempted to work through it, I even got a Warning saying that all the Material will be deleted. I'm sure that I've got something awry, but haven't found it yet. It all looks good until I get rid of the drops. No open vectors. Material at .25, depthj of cut .255, etc. Thoughts?

Zoom in a bit closer when you go to double click a piece of scrap. Sometimes the software thinks you're clicking on something still attached to the main piece.

@@MarkLindsayCNC Thanks for the quick reply, Mark! But no, it is the same waste areas that trigger the rest of the sign disappearing. I've zoomed in as far as I can and see no lines or pixels touching. I have screen shots of the Preview window, showing the stages of waste removal.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DELETE A LINE AND HAVE TO RETREAVE IT

You either go up to the EDIT menu and click UNDO, or hold down the CTRL button and tap the letter Z to undo the delete. That only works if you haven't done anything else since the delete. If you have done a bunch of other editing since that line was deleted, you'll have to draw another one.
