Wonderful Gord. I would have been glad to start my foray into segmenting work with some nice rings, but I'm lacking the tools at the moment to rip and cut and sand wood flat like you did. But it's a good lesson for when a time will come that I will be able to do so. Thank you for sharing your wonderful work as alway! Yuval.

Way to go. Again your attention to detail amazes me. I'm going to build a stop block like you have on your table saw. I've seen several similar, but not as sturdy as yours. I've built several of the segment cutters. The guy's see how great they work and they all want one. I finally built a couple extra and just show them how to put the runner on it and how to adjust everything. Haven't sold any, but everyone I've given one too sure enjoys using it. Haven't made a feature ring yet but some of the guys at the local club have made some that are pretty impressive. Keep up the good work.

@@GordonRock1 Hi again, When gluing up the laminations are there any concerns about glue set-up time? About how much time do you have to glue up the laminations?I know this differs with what type of glue you use.I've been using Titebond III and it sets up pretty fast when doing this type of glue-up.
@GordonRock1
@GordonRock1 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas, There is a limit to how long you have before the glue sets up. I don’t know what the time is for each different glue. I use Titebond Original most of the time. I try to get my rings glued and clamped within 20 minutes and have never had any problems. Occasionally I have taken longer than that with rings that have more segments or are more complex but still haven’t had any problems. I just checked their website and they claim the assembly time for Original is 4 - 6 minutes. Titebond III is 8 - 10 minutes. I guess I might be pushing my luck!! Oh well, so far so good! 👍👍🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Happy turning, .....Gord

@@GordonRock1 Not knowing a thing about woodworking I just bought Titebond III because it was the only one on the rack! LOL As you found on their site they claim you have 8-10 minutes work time.Even when only doing 12 segments I still find it difficult to move the segments.They start setting up much faster then the time they state!

I accidently pushed the do-not-like button but that's the exact opposite of what I meant:) I much enjoyed how with a simple jig and a disk sander you were able to achieve nice and repeatable units to make up your segmented ring. Excellent ring! That is a boatload of sanding. I wonder if you could reduce it some by cutting the pieces with a chop/miter saw. Still have to sand, but maybe less.
@GordonRock1
@GordonRock1 7 жыл бұрын
+Mark Hazlewood I'm glad you liked it, Mark. If you used a miter saw and cut closer to the lines it would certainly save a bit of time on the sander but the sander is so quick that I wouldn't bother involving another machine in the process. Going from one tool to another also takes a bit of time so I don't know if it would save much anyway. Thanks for watching & commenting, Mark. Take care, .....Gord

Hi again Gord. I'm making a segmented bowl from some 100+ year old poplar wood salvaged from the organ at my church...it finally was beyond repair..As poplar is kind of a plain grained wood, I want to make a feature ring that has crosses in it. I've looked at all of your videos to see if perhaps you might have done this, but I can't see where you have. If you have a moment and could give me a few ideas as to how to construct the cross design into a blank, I sure would appreciate it. I've tried, but so far, I have just made a mess...very frustrating...This will be my first bowl using your floating bottom. Thanks again for that video.

Instead of drawing each consequtive block in opposed direction, why not saw all in the same direction (long edges of rectangular touching another) and then flip every other block upside down? that would save you a tremendous amount of sawing and sanding as you could do all on your table saw.
