Whittier Alaska, is not quite like any other place I have visited in my life. In fact, my life paths have now crossed in Whittier Alaska. My last contract working on cruise ships ended here, before a re-position to Panama, but I spent many turn-around days exploring the buildings of this abandoned Cold War Base. When the Pandemic hit, that was the end of my life onboard cruise ships, but it was by no means the end of my adventures. It has taken me nearly three years to get back here, but I am back and I am able to explore this area better than ever.
Though this adventures destination is Whittier, the road did not start here. Leaving from Dawson City, I was blessed with a beautiful passage over the Top of the World Highway. This is a route that I have been almost equally as nervous for as I have been excited. Few places in the world can you take a motorhome into the alpine, but it of course comes with some risks and challenges. This route contains several hundred kilometres of rough dirt road, and with that comes the risk of breakdowns and damage, especially to a motorhome. I am well aware of, and prepared, for these risks before entering into any passage, but this time they got the best of me. A bad brake failure was unexpected, and lead to a substantial repair, but it was again a repair I could handle.
Passing through Anchorage, and into Whittier, I got to finally pass through the famous train tunnel, crossing one more item off my list, but on the other side, I was not greeted with sunshine. In fact, I was greeted by seven days of horrendous weather, a boat full of water and a broken boat trailer. These are not fun things to deal with, but they did not deter me from my adventure, and on day eight, I got to embark on it. Whittier is famous for its Cold War history, but it is also well known for its proximity to glaciers. I have filmed many of these glaciers during my time on ships, but to do it on my own was a massive goal, and I am so proud to check it off the list. It was a big risk taking my boat out on the frigid waters to the glaciers, but once again it paid off tenfold.

Imagine if US never received Alaska from Russia , I can't even imagine it honestly. So happy things are the way they are and situations like this are possible. We need to cherish Alaska, yeah Fairbanks can continue to involve but the rest of the state needs to remain as is. Anyone visiting, please remember "LEAVE nothing but footprints" ❤ BTW: This mans editing skills is bar none, some of the highest quality videos I've seen on this platform.

Fortunately 222.7 million acres (approximately 60 %) of the total land area of Alaska is federal land. Of Alaskas total area, 20.35% is held by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service , 19.38% by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, 13.98% by the U.S. National Park Service, 5.83% by the U.S. Forest Service and 0.45% by the U.S. Department of Defense. The state government doesn't really have a say in the use of any of that land. The federal government doesn't appear to be engaged in a drive to pave paradise and put in a parking lot, there. While Alaska amounts to 17.53% of the land area of the United States, it only contains 0.22% of the total U.S. population and only produces 0.20% of U.S. GDP. It's huge, but it is also very sparsely populated and very economically undeveloped. . It has 3rd lowest percentage of total population ahead of Vermont and Wyoming and shares last place in contribution to total U.S GDP with Wyoming, Montana and Vermont, which it must be said, have less land between them than Alaska does on its own. Montana at 145,556 square miles plus Wyoming at 97,105 square miles plus Vermont at 9,249 square miles equals 251.910 square miles. Alaska amounts to 570,641 square miles, over double the size of those other three states put together.

This video was the first time I knew why you started this channel and FWIW, I think that your success is inspiring. The Pandemic negated the option to continue with a career that it's apparent you loved, which must have been emotionally gutting. Instead of looking back at what was, you decided to look forward and by chance, found your new passion. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us, it's so interesting. I've enjoyed every single one of your videos thus far, including this one. I feel as if you've invited me to be an unseen guest on your travels. What keeps me engaged with your channel is your storytelling and the way you interact so respectfully and warmly with the people you've encountered on your adventures. What I appreciate most about your interest in forgotten places is that you always bring them to life. Safe journeys to wherever you venture next. :)

This video brought back some great memories from a trip we did in 2013. Crossed the Yukon river from Dawson City end of May. Early Spring up there and the river was near flood levels with all sorts of trees and other things roaring down the river! The ferry was running, but on the far side they had a bulldozer and numerous dump trucks bringing fill to build up the landing as the river was constantly rising. Unfortunately, the drone shots tend to make the drive somewhat less scary than it really was with the hairpin curves and all. You missed a great little bar in Chicken in which I enjoyed a shot and a beer after that drive! Hilarious incident which happened at the crossing. the officer asked where we were going and I said Chicken, He looks at me and says, WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU GO TO CHICKEN! It was priceless! All in all a great trip. Great video Dustin! Keep em coming.

Dustin, having been to Alaska three times and the Yukon too I can honestly say you have helped to catch the spirit for those who have never been. We sailed out of Whittier once, on the Dawn Princess for our honeymoon, and the winds were so strong that he ship delayed it’s departure. The captain said, by the time the ropes would have been dropped the wind would have pushed us to the shore. The power of the wind is amazing. Safe travels and looking forward to more of your adventures, as always.

Just came across The section where you mentioned your appreciation of all the support you’ve been getting from everyone and the ability to keep going from your patrons. By far this is the best film you have produced by far. WOW!!! What an unbelievably amazing post. Thank you for posting this film. That waterfall was absolutely amazing. Great work. We look forward to the next post.

I am so thrilled I caught up on your videos. (I've been moving.) This one was absolutely incredible!! Exhilarating! And I wasn't even there. Thanks for freezing your tail off and facing danger so we can witness the epic-ness of melting glaciers. It's deeply humbling. I can only imagine how powerful it must've been firsthand. Stay safe out there Dustin. We love you!

Thanks for taking us along on your adventure. Years ago I rowed our dingy over to a small ice berg, hammered a peon into the burg and lied off. Then chipped off enough ice to fill our refer. Onward!

We lived in Alaska for 15 years, Anchorage for 3 years, Soldotna for 12 years. When we lived there you had to take the train through the tunnel to Whittier. I drove a tractor trailer onto the train taking a load of ice in, and hauling a load of fish out. Quite the ride! Anyway l really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work, Wally and Susanne Williams

It's incredible that some of these glaciers have ice or I should say water from the time of the Great Flood. That must be some of the purest water anywhere. Maybe that's why the waters are so blue and clear. Well actually the color will be due to the rocks and whatever else is on the bottom of the water. Reflecting and turning color to a blue hue. So beautiful!

Wow Dustin, what a great job on these videos! You really made nice lemonade from the covid lemon. It's been good for you that the cruise gig dried up and got you to do this. You were destined for it. Thanks for taking us along.

Never gets old...... Even though I do. I have been lucky enough to spend a great deal of time as far N.West as BC/Whistler n Blackcomb, West: Hawaii, South: West Indies and East: Austrian Alps. Unfortunately, though the heart is still young and my memories burn bright, I got a lot of miles and some sever damage to the chassis. So, at least to some extent, I forced to live vicariously through other's adventures. So thanks for that.

Mate, Have been having a tough week. Had forgotten about my KZfaq fun. Just picked up the iPad and voila, another new adventure from you. Made me smile and then sit back and enjoy every minute. You have a gift, mate. And there are plenty of us out there who are thankful for it. Thanks again for bringing a smile to my dial. Keep it up. Cheers, Rob, Tasmania, Australia 🇦🇺
