Destiny 2's lore and story is pivoting to a foreboding place with the Into The Light update. In the latest Bungie developer livestream it was revealed that the Last City will be need to be defended against the Pyramid Fleet. The activity in which we'll do this is Onslaught and we'll be getting a helping hand from Lord Shaxx who will be in charge of the city's defense.

Interesting note: With the Hive being part of this, from what I recall this marks the first time where all 4 of the main enemy factions (Fallen, Cabal, Vex, Hive) have attacked the Last City at some point. Neat.

@@JPOG7TV9/10 times I would agree with this sentiment but it’s honestly a much better way to go this route. Hype is built up over time. Plus every aspect of the update gets its own dedicated time slot. For example, the weapons/loot getting its own dedicated live stream. Which also might hint at other content coming with the update. If Shaxx’s arsenal and the Black Armory are dropping from this new activity, the Midnight Coup is likely dropping from something different. Too many hand cannons to come from one activity. Luna’s Howl and or Not Forgotten, and Kindled Orchid are practically confirmed to drop from the activity. 3/4 hand cannons in one loot pool is a bit extreme.

I know when speaking about Shaxx working with old allies getting us weapons, and we immediately think of Ada-1 because of the Black Armory weapons. I also hope we get Shiro-4 to return as well since he was a master at weapon crafting hense Tresspasser.

The red war had the benefit of being the main part of a campaign. ITL is being added to the game as filler content that can’t take too much manpower from final shape.

Honestly I don’t think it would make sense to do that again from a narrative view as the red war really should mean the city is more prepared for breaches of the walls and able to evacuate areas accordingly. Basically it would be dumb if nothing has changed since the last time as the city was totally taken over whereas this time we are actually making a defence.

At first I was like “Wait, I thought the Witness couldn’t see what we were doing while it was inside the Traveler.” But I suppose it doesn’t need to see us to hinder us. I imagine it relayed one simple order to its minions while in the Pale Heart. Something akin to “Keep them busy. Or “Slow them down.”

It would have been crazy if they made the old tower the only social space, placing every vendor there and turn the actual tower into one of the new gamemode map. It would have been really impactful, the Witness actually hitting hight value target zones and would make sense for the convenient timing for the old tower being repaired. Also as a bonus, non vendor key characters should also be placed in the new tower, old tower or HELM at least as backround (mithrax, eido, sloane, ana bray ...)

They should also bring back the last mission from vanilla destiny 2 that took place in the last city, the one where you killed Ghoul, change the order, remove his ship and the cabal and just make it another map. Many actual destiny 2 players didn't get to play it and for some of us veterans it would be a nice call back to the first moments of destiny 2, even if those were not the best, that mission specifically was.

My biggest gripe here, is that if its all PvPs map doesn't make it feel like "defending the Last City" It just feels like defending a PvP zone given so far the ADU positions seem to be placed at A, B, C zones

With onslaught taking place on PvP maps this makes me wish we at least had more pvp maps in the city. If I’m correct Midtown & Bannerfall are the only maps in the city, so the rest will either be on other earth locations or somewhere else in sol. I am hoping the new pvp maps coming in May are part of Onslaught.

The Eliksnee Quarter, or whatever it was in... the raid, it was taken from? Anyway, that could also be a good place narratively to defend, as it's where our two species became allies and fought along side each other against the Vex.

I’m no expert here, but tactically speaking it makes no sense to leave Neomuna alone. They’re a big ally of ours and they have the Veil. It makes a lot of sense if the Witness attacks Earth and Neomuna seeing as how both cities control key elements of accessing the portal.

I liked this reveal. I'm always up for another hoard mode in Destiny. They're my favorite way to relax with the game. It also takes care of a key story point so that our battle with the Witness can be the sole focus of TFS.

If they ever update onslaught post TFS, one mission has to be rebuilding Insurrection Prime. Imagine having a _friendly_ Brig during a boss fight. Or hive wizards trying to figure out the APC mechanic.

I wonder if the hand cannon we see is Tex Mechanica? Personally, I just really want new and old Black Armory weapons and armor, Daito, more Tex Mechanica, MIDA, and Crux/Lomar weapons added to the loot pool. Ada offering new and old BA weapons and armor would give us more incentive to visit her.

The stream was far longer than it needed to be. Everyone I've talked to about it has agreed that all three livestreams should have been combined into a single1-1.5 hour livestream. I really hope next week isn't just a whole hour of talking about a handful of new weapons.

You know what they should have done, based on your description in the first few minutes? To make this feel worth the time investment, is having a city defense rank/level, and based on what it is when the final shape drops, you get a percentage boost of exp or drops. Because the final shape is a ways away, youd want to make the levels hard to attain for the higher ranks, but there's the player incentive and it makes sense in the world of the game. Come on Bungo.

What if that old rumor of the kalishnakov rifle you first got becoming an exotic finally happens. During your first revival outside the wall, in some sort of “moment of weakness” fight against the witness. All before the arena has phases marking key phases in your own and the history of the universe. (Like how depending on your save data and the beginning of 2)

I've been playing for a few years and I enjoy the game. Never been a big fan of pvp stuff though. Lost my interest back in the day with CoD type games becoming overrun with cheaters. Haven't been playing Destiny as much as I'd like recently, but I'm looking forward to Into The Light. Games with a lot of lore, history, stories, and world building are my favorite. Destiny is a gem to me in that regard since it's also a great FPS. Nice timing for the stream with today being my birthday. I consider it a gift to get a little info drop into what's coming. 😁

I imagine there will be another mission to the tower (if ZH doesn’t return) because we spent decades or centuries in-universe and have acquired numerous powerful artifacts and at least denying us the chance to get to said artifacts would be paramount to the Witness (we had Savathun there at one point, parts of the Traveller’s Cage are scattered amongst the City, and the Crown is MIA)

I love everything about Onslaught except the timing. This should’ve been what defiance was about. Ever since the witness went into the portal, it makes sense he’d be doing everything to keep us out. Defiance, according to the devs was about how the war was finally on the home front and Onslaught sells that really well. I’m willing to accept that the witness has maybe upped its game having maybe sensed that Crow is on his way in but besides that it feels like the best activity ever at a different time. It’s a minor criticism but overall this is what I want to see from Bungie, as far as the activity goes, considering stream delivery only, it is very good!

Taken are able to be in the laylines? What if the witness has them searching for and blocking off the laylines physically against crow. As a way tonblock the bridge we are attempting to build?

I don't think this is a return to the old tower yet as a new social space. It's probably similar to Xurs social space for Dares - a space used to prep for Onslaught with Shaxx, etc. Best not to get our hopes up on that

The lack of a new enemy race to make up the Witness’s main forces has really left a negative impact on the game. It’s obvious there was meant to be one, as they teased an entire fleet of Pyramid ships for several years. Making the Witness the entire race merged into one entity is a clear excuse for the giant fleet of ships to not have its own forces, and having random Fallen and Hive occupy the ships just really feels off.

Honestly, if I feel there's one thing missing from Onslaught. It's that this would be a great vehicle to introduce Subjugators. Bannerfall was my first thought for maps, hadn't considered Twilight Gap. Though I must say Twilight Gap is all rusted out, with maybe functional weapons, so who knows how defensible it'd be. Pie in the sky, I'd love to see a Land Tank and Cabal emplacements defending a location, Cosmodrome? Somewhere entirely new? It really doesn't matter. It has far reaching ramifications for civilians to see a Land Tank that would otherwise be used as some kind of invasion staging point. Absolutely not gonna happen, but it'd be nice to see Cabal/House Light involvement beyond just Guards and Engineers in The Tower, and Ships in the sky.

From the remains of mass fields of solar panels to the now desertified agri-district, from the great capital to the further ancient ruins of pre-iron egypt, there is no shortage of fascinating golden-age to bronze-age artefacts to be found. However, it seems that aside from the hardlight technology that pushed egyptian industry and research, another sort of Light was well studied and enhanced... one we are all well aquainted with. A pyramid ship was spotted burying itself next to the ancient tombs famous to the region, adding a 3rd behemoth to the drying landscape. We believe it has found something the scientists of old used to enhance and shape the Light, without being Guardians. I don't think the old tower is our new social space. The presenter uses the phrase "down there" when he mentions the new space. I think it's somewhere down in the Last City.

For the maps, i was really hoping they'd reuse the old Red War city locations and maybe that location from when we entered the city to see the traveler awaken. It's really disappointing we're getting midtown when Last City assests do exist. But maybe I'll be proven wrong in the next two live streams...

I don't know...if turrets, trip mines, and sweeper bots are the best we can come up with to protect humanity while we are in the Traveler, i need the best narrative sell on this for me to go along, because I think humanity is going to be dead before we reach the Witness, and if not, than the forces of the Witness don't seem particularly fearsome to me. And I have no trust what so ever in the Bungie's narrative team anymore and this stream made me feel like we are going to be getting a whole lot more of the last year which was a lot of nothing in the end because it was all filler, and I think only die hard lore people that will take anything will be interested, but most people are going to forget about all of this or not be sold on it, narratively speaking.

I hope we see all six Towers get rebuilt. I’d love to see each Tower house its own group: one for Cabal, one for Eliksni, one for Awoken. Then maybe one for each Guardian class?

If bungie were to have added more of these free updates between seasons i think people wouldn’t have gotten so fatigued with the game or the seasonal model for that part. The free updates dont always have to be new gamemodes or whatever but it would give them a chance to revisit old modes like gambit, crucible and strikes and invest some more love into them keeping them fresh for the community. People like new things and the seasons would provide (except i would tweak the repetitiveness of each season so they could stand out more) while the free updates could exist to improve the foundations already in place in the game while also making the game feel fresh and unique once again. This update i predict is gonna do well for the game. Not on large scale terms but it might bring the buzz back up right before final shape.

Shadow Legion seems to have aligned purpose with taken given that both lacks sentience and follows order of witness without question. Copium as it may be, I need to see the Psion conclave, aligned with Shadow Legion in action and giving some serious lore, giving a cherry on top for this moment and strengthening the Witness cause of attempt.

So…I’m assuming Red Death will come back. Banned weapon was very very specific. Also Raze Lighter maybe??? Maybe we’ll get D1 exotic armor too? If they don’t bring back the D1 tower or only for the activity and is temporary…that’d be one of the biggest L’s ever.

I'm excited for this. It would have been interesting if they had something like this developing over the course of the year, rather than the Witness's forces invading like a year after it went into the Traveler. Imagine if we had people being abducted during Defiance, then it turns out that was somehow related to the pyramid ships gaining access to and terraforming Earth somehow. Then in Deep, instead of Salvage we got a base version of this to go alongside Deep Dives. So while we're communing with Ahsa and all that, we're constantly reminded that Earth is under siege and there's a sense of urgency. Then in Witch (though I wouldn't trade any of Witch's activities, as that season was excellent), imagine new locations and/or mechanics are introduced, and the overall state of the locations is more destroyed and decrepit. Then this season, instead of re-running Forsaken/DC content, still further new locations and/or mechanics are introduced. I know it's fruitless to wonder about what could have been (and I've been critical of Byf and others for knocking good developments because "this should have been in Lightfall"), and I know this was probably was a year of content that had less dev time because it was sort of a filler to buy time for TFS, and i know this likely wasn't in development early enough to implement what I lay out above (and I'm sure learnings from Deep Dives and such have played into its development), but it would have been really cool to have something like this building throughout the year, giving an actual sense of peril and urgency.

I am very wary of the words they used in the livestream, hopefully they will clarify. They haven't said it'll be free, only that it will be "available to all players", which is a rather cagey way of saying it. When they have been this vague in the past, it was because they were planning some sort of rug pull

honestly if these updated/recycled/whatever-the-fuck-you-want-to-call-it come as alternate PvP maps that would be kind of interesting! The map they are playing on has some interesting map layout changes, especially around the carpet shop at the top of Midtown

If the taken and scorn are the witness’ personal forces, i’m guessing it would want to redeploy them to the pale heart if we make enough progress in pushing back the disposable grunts in the form of the hive and fallen
