Destiny 2's Lore and Story from the Ghosts of the Deep Dungeon tells us about Xivu Arath. The Calcified Fragments from the new dungeon in the Season of the Deep contain the memories of the Hive god of war. These memories show us not only what Xivu thought about the death of Oryx and the betrayal of Savathun but also it gives us a glimpse at Xivu's potential weaknesses.

@@inquisitorichijou883 It was while Savathun was inhabiting Osiris' body, watching Crow and the Guardian act like fools around a campfire together. The reason is a direct quote is because Xivu is experiencing the exact same shock of nostalgia that Savathun felt in that moment. What they feel, borne from the doubt and nostalgia, reflection and grief of their choices and actions over the millennia, is _guilt._

it's interesting, because this implies Xivu's dedication to the Sword Logic doesn't extend from fanaticism, but love for her brother. That "truth" was his gift to her, so by preserving it, she's preserving the memory of Oryx and expressing her love for him even after death.

For the Hive God we know the least about, this dungeon has probably done the best job of introducing the important elements of her chatacter out of any like it. @everythingincorporated4597

@Chance I see Caital as moreso Calus' greatest regret. He truly regrets that he's made her hate him so much, he truly did wish she would stay by his side. Remember, most nightmares are created through regrets commonly. For example, back in Season of the Haunted, we found out that Ikora's nightmare was Cayde. Not only did Crow fear becoming like Uldren again, but he regretted what Uldren did, he regretted how much he's still like Uldren. Going back to Calus, he's regretful of what he did to Caital. Killing her Warbeast out of jealousy for the beast, pushing her so hard, causing so much animosity that she was one of the main players in the coup. Yes, he is scared of his daughter. She has so much unbridled rage towards her father, and now? She has so much power on her side. She has an Iron Lord amongst her ranks. Ultimately, he's a father who regrets what he has done to his daughter to make her hate him so much, because he thought he was doing the right thing.
@Andrew-ry9be
@Andrew-ry9be Жыл бұрын
From what I’ve read, the grand scheme of Duality was to delve into his mind to find some sort of weakness in Calus, some sort of Achilles heel. Killing his nightmare of Caiatl as the boss inadvertently removed the emotional connection that Calus had for Caiatl going into Lightfall. This was supposedly proven in “The Downfall” mission where Caiatl busts us out and Calus had no emotional affinity for her, making him a greater threat to both the guardian and Caiatl. I have no other way to prove that, so feel free to take that with a whole shaker of salt.

Root of Nightmares wasn't made to show that she is his greatest fear or his greatest regret. We understood that by his words throughout the season. No, Root of Nightmares was meant to show why she is his greatest fear and regret. It was meant to show many of the things he had done to create such hatred to him.

It’s love and loss, twisted in such a way that they don’t understand. Seeing humans, Guardians, Eliksni, Awoken and Cabal be….joyous, merry, it hurts them deeply, reopening old memories. To feel a fond remembrance for each other. They don’t want it, they deny it because it goes against what they believe….but deep down, that’s what they truly desire. Some people seem to think she'll rebel against the witness, but I'm hoping for Xivu going further into the darkness and madness it'd be a great dark mirror to Savathûn who's doubt caused her to seek light. Instead, Xivu doubles down and, in the process, becomes more insane than she clearly is now, and a truly insane villain is just so unique as we only have ego maniacs as main villains it seems.
@moonlitmortician6694

That actually sounds pretty cool. And if they bring Savathun back, she and Xivu could have this big confrontation, two sister's lead down different paths but from the same motivation. You could even show a conflicted Xivu, desperate to have her family back, but also hating Savathun for her betrayal.

I don't personally think she's going to double-down, I do think she'll turn on the Witness. However, instead of her becoming an ally, I agree that she's going to lose her mind. I think that she's going to eventually go on a complete warpath, destroying everything in her path because she can't trust anything anymore. Part of me buys into this simply because I’m not sure where we would actually defeat Xivu. She’s gotta be a raid boss you would think, I guess it could be a dungeon, but assuming raid it won’t be next season because it’s a reprised, and it won’t be final shape (most likely) because you would think that would be the Witness. I guess fighting Xivu could be what happens post final shape but I feel like we’d have to fight her before the witness.

I will say that Xivu's voice is not what I was expecting. And I really didn't like it at first. I felt like the multi-layered whispering background voices made more sense for Savathun, being the god of deception and trickery. For Xivu, the god of WAR, I expected something more powerful and booming. Like everything would sound as if she were in a massive echoing cavern. It's started to grow on me with these more nuanced memories, though. And I think the voice actress absolutely knocked it out of the park with what they gave her. It's the design/direction choice itself that I'm not overly fond of.

Xivu's voice actor is incredible. Really sells just how fanatical, distressed, and enraged she is. Hearing about her past, talking about telling stories in the 'garden' makes me wish there was a "happy ending" like, alternate universe. Where instead of slaughtering entire species, the siblings walk around Fundament together and eat muffins or something. I imagine Oryx as like, the optimistic one with wide eyes, chasing animals and inviting their sisters out to spend the day by the water. Savathun 'reluctantly' agrees, pretends to be annoyed with Oryx's constant thrill for adventure, and tries to make the trip interesting with magic tricks and silly pranks, like sticking out her leg when Oryx runs circles around her. Xivu is the big sister who stays a step behind, and she would thump Savathun on her forehead, scold her for being mean, and just smile and nod to whatever Oryx suggests, because she thinks it's endearing and not annoying. I can see it all so clearly! Ah well. Maybe another life. Unfortunate that we'll probably have to fight her soon.

The character exploration is fascinating here, in just a few audio logs, we learn of Xivu's love for her brother, her motivatuons, her insecurities, here relationship to Savathûn, and her tactical brilliance. Savathûn was a great villain, but she was never particually sympathetic because she was too busy being so delightfully evil. Savathûn is interesting because she really was the cause of all the issues the siblings faced, she lead them into the deep, she killed Aurix, she tried to imprison Oryx in the deep, she announced her desire to part from Oryx. She used a gift from him to steal his power from where it rightfully belonged after his death, she defied the sword logic, she embraced the light and she tried to forcefully ressurect Oryx in the ultimate act of heracy. When Xivu learns of what the luscent tried to do here, her fury will be boundless, Savathûn is Xivu's nemasis and when Savathûn eventually returns, one of them will have to die because Savathûn represents everything Xivu hates. In these entries, Xivu truly becomes the protagonist in a way that Calus never was, Savathûn was and is the ultimate villain of the hive gods and that's as true for Xivu as for us, I kinda want to see Xivu kill Savathûn just to get closure, or to finally reconcile with her (though that's less likely since Savathûn is pretty damn evil, depends on whether she got all of her memories back in the Witch Queen.)
@Lightna

It also helps paint a picture of how the three sisters were before they descended into the Deep then rose from it. If Xivu's faith has been shaken to its very foundations laid personally by Oryx, then one cannot help but imagine how it will turn out should Xivu and Savathun meet in current day. However do bear in mind, when the Hive gods killed each other it was how they expressed love to one another. The big shocker would be that one of them turns and walks away, refusing to kill. That would be the for sure sign that the love is lost and there is only conflict.

"What is this feeling? I do not want it." Savathun says this in the Hawkmoom lore tab when watching The Guardian (us) and Crow celebrating, having friendship and camaraderie. Seeing us like that reminds her of her sisters and thua states this. Xivu Arath says this upon reflecting on the time of being with her sisters. They've turned so far away from being "human" that anything that reminds them of being that way repulses them. But I can't help but feel that the repulsion is a mask and, as Byf briefly touched upon here, they may have regrets of turning to the Darkness.

I can't help but think that Bungie will make Xivu Arath a dungeon boss in a future season and that she is out ultimate enemy of Lightfall. I would want Xivu to be a raid boss so maybe it'll be Final Shape that has us dealing with both Xivu and The Witness but how Bungie shaped up Calus's return only to have us defeat him so easily in Lightfalls Campaign. I don't know if Bungie is going to make a quick write off of Xivu. Hopefully not though.

I loved all of these audio logs it shows xivu’s love for her siblings especially oryx… but it’s so sad that they did all of this for a lie… that reaction to oryx being killed was just heartbreaking to hear it goes from complete agony and pain to unbridled rage that we left his kingship bare… maannn just great in game lore

I hope that when she finds out, instead of joining or doubling down on a side she goes AWOL until the next saga where she can act as a big bad but much more crazy considering from the sounds of it she's spiraling into madness also amazing work from Kimberly Brooks she did an outstanding job portraying all the emotions running through Xivu's heart

This dungeon really paints the picture for Xivu's character and I like how she isn't just some war mongering God, she acts human and expresses her emotions thoroughly. What I find interesting in her family dynamic is that Oryx is seen as the big brother and is praised highly, but fell and followed the sword logic to the end. Then Savanthun, who follows her own agenda and path-which in turn lead her to becoming a guardian and rebelling against the witness, making her an outcast. Then there's Xivu, she's the last of her siblings and has heard/watched her bloodline, her family be slaughtered one by one and this has left her with rage and unhinged. You could view Xivu as the sibling that was left behind and forced to follow the path laid out before her because she has no where left to go, no purpose left other than the role she was groomed for eons by the witness. I feel for Xivu's pain and love the direction Bungie has taken with her character, but as much as people may see her rebelling, I think the truth is she'll stick to the sword logic and scum to the darkness, to rage more and more-because she has no one left to go to that could help her and perhaps Savanthun's returning could shape that-but only the story ahead will tell.

"What is this feeling? I do not want it" from Xivu here parallels Savathun's own thoughts from her time as Osiris, thinking and feeling soft things she hasn't felt in so long that she doesn't even have the words for them, and does not want them. I really, really hope we get more on this.

I really wish Byf would show off more of Xivu Araths Canon apperance, rather than his fan-made version. Its gonna confuse new players why Xivu Arath is in the Kings Fall Raid. Plus, Xivu Araths Canon appearance just looks cooler to me. Much more unique and demonic than a Warpriest with red paint and chains. :/

That last line on the last calcified fragment, "What is this feeling? I do not want it." seems like a callback to Hawkmoon's lore tab to me... The contexts and emotions are very different, but what then, could be the resemblance here? Longing?
@S3Cs4uN8
@S3Cs4uN8 Жыл бұрын
For Savathun I think it was a mix of Longing and Regret, Longing for the family she once had and Regret for the path and logic that had pulled them apart. For Xivu-Arath I think she's carried on with the Sword Logic as both a way of holding on to the memory of her brother as well as a sort of 'I'll finish what you started' type motivation. With the end of that path in sight she's realized she is alone, she's made it to the end of her Brother's path but he is not there to see it.

I really love Bungie's wrtiting. I was listening to 16:17 "Screams like a choir as their mountains trembled. Screams like a choir as their seas boiled." They could've written about any facet of nature that can be atributed to planetary destruction. But they chose mountains and seas. Why? Because that is what IS Cabal. "They Eat the Mountains, Drink the Seas" She's basically reveling in destroying what they hold most dear in a sense. Also a cool play on words in the next line "Theory in (practice) Praxis"

I still can't get this out of this my head but I post it here. What if Oryx does come back ether way? If Xixv her Achiles heel is her family. Then it could be her famliy that can help us. Imagine Savathun is back. But Xixv won't listen to her. But we know she values and trusts her brother Oryx and with little options left he comes back. With a Ghost and us to explain what has happened. God that would be epic.

I just imagine somewhere a fragment of Toland is chilling with Xivu "You're mad cause they squandered the throne, huh? Me too." Honestly, this dungeon was definitely a trip filled with sorrow for me. Hearing Xivus struggle. Her rage, her sorrow, her doubt. I do wonder, if the dungeon isn't just pointing toward Xivus arrival, if it's also pointing us to how we bring back Savathun, or even by extension, Cayde.

What a fascinating dive into the lore of Xivu Arath....previously I figured that she would be the most loyal, dedicated, and fanatical of all of the Witness' remaining servants. That a resurrected and reasonably cooperative Savathûn would have to throw the entire Lucent Brood at Xivu's forces to take them off the board, so to speak, in our final push against the Witness at the end of Final Shape. Now? I'm not so sure. There is now some context to her motivations and an opportunity for more than just Hive-on-Lucent-Hive slaughter to aid in a final push against the Witness. Rather than simply tying up the Hive or even convincing them to go away, maybe, just maybe, Xivu Arath will turn on the Witness as Eramis has been turning? I see a window, however small it may be, to having some kind of truce between Alliance forces and the Hive. (I still think that Destiny 3, whenever it eventually comes out, would naturally have playable alien races...some of that groundwork is already being laid, with Caiatl asking Osiris to help teach Cabal forces about the Darkness, and it would only take some story finagling to have some Lucent Hive - perhaps under Fynch's direction - stick around and help out with future events.) Either way, there is now a lot of added depth to Xivu Arath's character that make her that much more compelling and interesting as a villain. Bungie may be mistakenly slow-playing us on the Veil, but I'd say they're hitting other parts of the story like this one out of the park. As an aside, does anyone else get really amused at how KZfaq's auto-subtitling function 1) struggles to pick up Byf's accent, and 2) inconsistently misspells Xivu's name?

The "feeling" line callback is also an incredible mirror to Savathun's feeling that she wanted to reject. Both feelings, while different, may mirror what they've rejected with their nature's they've adapted to for so long. Savathun felt longing for companionship, companionship that can never be achieved living a life of deceit. Xivu might be in a place where her feeling of loss is the sacrifice she makes by taking her nature of war. Both saw the parts that they did not like about their way of life. Both of them may reject these feelings, however much these differ from each other.

23:56 Super interesting choice of words there; word for word what Savathùn said when she was still Osiris observing us and Crow in the Hawkmoon loretab, where she starts to experience longing for the simpler times, her home, her siblings...etc; First she said: "What is this feeling? I did not ask for it. I do not understand it. I do not want it." Then she said: "What is this feeling? I do not understand it. I do not want it." Then she said: "What is this feeling? I do not want it." Then finally: "What is this feeling?". notice the missing "I do not want it" implying she likes it. If Xivu is going through the same emotional dilemma as her sister was before she did forsake her past self then it stands to reason that Xivu will probably go through the same.
