So here are the things that will happen when Final Shape releases: Onslaught and Pantheon will stay, all Lightfall seasonal content (battlegrounds, salvage, deep dive, altars, Savathun's spire, Riven's lair and Coil) go away. Correct me if I'm wrong.

They already basically have with the amount of stops they’ve been doing with the New Into the light update that came around in April. It’s been one of Bungie’s most successful updates alongside Pantheon! The final shape looks insane, I wouldn’t be surprised if they absolutely pull every stop in the expansion and the episode dlcs after, I could see Destiny 2 getting a nomination for game of the year

The player base has been back. They didn't really leave at all either. Live-service games you should take breaks and due to the expansion delay many people took that oppurtunity. The recent Into the Light update was free and very good and Final Shape looks promising.
