I’d honestly like to see how one would preform under the same tests. Started carrying a Ganzo 727m about a year ago and I love it. I beat on it when at work and it’s a great edc knife. If I was to loose or break it I wouldn’t be upset, but if I lost or broke one of my benchmades I’d be upset. Can’t beat the $19.00 price tag.

This test just show me that ganzo is really good edc folder knife. Well made, sharp (also with your test). For the money is a great knife (for daily jobs "cutting"). I dont have any ganzo, but I have some emersons, benchmade or spyderco who cant survive this batoning or tip test.

Folders are more meant for edc and finer tasks. And an axe is meant for splitting wood, if you have both of those there isn't much need for a fixed blade unless it's a small one to replace a folder.

I really like you guys and I watch you a lot, but if you want to be fair then do this same testing with a bunch of other folding knives too, I think you will find that they have the same kinds of problems. Folders were never made for batoning. I can even find a bunch of bushcrafters who say full tang fixed blades are not made for batoning. Hatchets and axes and froe's are made for processing wood, not knives - they will say. After saying all that. I really enjoyed the video, it was fun, just like almost all of your videos are.

Hey mate, We would love to test out some sturdier folders in the future the same way we did this one. I know some people don't like batonning with a knife. However, I think this is a bit outdated. Older knives were almost never full-tang so you wouldn't baton with a knife like that. These days batonning has become popular and knife makers make their knives so they can handle batonning with ease. I really enjoy batonning with my knife next to the camp fire. It's really relaxing and satisfying as long as there are no nasty nots. But of course I knife is not primarily for batonning. - stay sharp!, cheers.

I have been mostly a folder collector for as long as you two have been alive. I don't know of any folders whatsoever that are designed to withstand batoning. My guess is that some, maybe a HUGE Cold Steel with the triad lock, might be able to handle light batoning. You guys know a lot about bushcraft, woodcraft and survival knives but maybe not so much about folders, and I respect what I watch and hear from you in regards to those knives. You need to test a knife for what it is designed to do and judge it on those merits, or lack thereof. This is not to say that a destructive test is bad, not at all, but to expect a folder to perform well with batoning is to ask MUCH more of the knife than it was designed for. I don't know of a single knife maker that will not void a warranty if their folder was used to baton with. Can you show any proof of any folding knife that is designed to withstand batoning, and where the manufacturer will fix it under warranty?
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын
you speak the truth and we have little knowledge when it comes to folders. This video was not intended to show that a folder is bad or anything. Folders are made for a different purpose like you say. However, we get a lot of questions why we don't use folders for our bushcraft or why we don't have many folders in our collection. This video was kinda the answer to that. We don't use folders because they can't handle survival tasks. I carry a Kershaw 18700BLK as EDC together with my higonokami and victorinox, They are all great at what they are made for and I enjoy them a lot. I mostly open cardboard boxes with them or food packagings. Thats also why we say this folder is just fine for EDC in the video. We just had some fun showing why you actually shouldn't do what we did. With the batonning in my previous comment I meant fixed, full-tang blades. I would personally never ever use a folder like we did in this video. I think we are on the same line but the video might be a bit misleading. -Stay sharp!

folders are GREAT for fiddling around with for boredom. I know too many knife nuts on many of the forums love to flick open knives for fun. Ability to conceal and keep a low profile is also nice around sheeple. Most knife guys I'm close with live in the city like me, and we aren't allowed to openly carry fixed blades which also changes circumstances.

i like your way answering almost all questions about a purpose of this video. Next time i wait you to do batoning with a Benchmade Adamas, or the real Heckler & Koch 14715 (original knife of ganzo copy). Because this axis lock is not original, the benchmade is developer of axis lock and owing a patent for it. It'll be much different than Ganzo's axis. And i wish you will do a batoning with a cold steel knives with CTS-XHP steel and most robust locking mechanism for a folder the Tri-Ad Lock in the future.

hi, mates. first i have to thank you for your enjoyable work. i´ve ran across your videos like a week ago, and they are highly inspiring and entertaining as well, as your friendship looks to me. second it´s great to find such an internet popular supporters for moraknives which i´m a great fan myself. and third is i´d be pleased to read your opinion about very possible damage i´m about to cause to my main knife :).. a few years back i decided between f1 and j. v. peltonen´s sissipuukko m07 (if you´re a bit familiar with it), but now i´m a little confused about my previous choice. the supreme leather sheath, a little longer blade and a non-commercial brand were the reasons i prefered the m07. afterall it´s a great worker, but right now i´m thinking about modificating the blade more like the f1 length and shape... what do you guys thing about this kind of "improvement" to a knife in general. i love knives and i sure like to own some more of them, but i don´t like the idea to use one and keep the others in a drawer, and that´s why i´d better modificate it to my preferences before i buy a new one. do you have such an experience of your own to advice in such a way? with best wishes mjk
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын
+m.j.k. A modification is defenitly something that we like to do to our knives. However we also like to buy multiple knives. I would say: if you like your knife as it is, keep it this way. If you're not happy with this knife then it's time for some modification boogy down action. So do it if you don't really like this knife the way that it is now.

Poor ganzo.. I love those knives! If I was a rich man I would buy you each a Fällkniven PXL. I bet that would change your philosophy about folders.The blade is almost as thick as my F1 and of similiar lenght. The liner lock is more than twice as thick as most folders and the pivot too. Asif that wasnt enough the blade also rests on a second 3-4mm round steel pin that is welded onto the liner beneath the bolsters (that in turn I believe are friction welded on to the liner). The micarta scales are pretty much indestructable both to blunt force and heat and the laminated 3G blade takes and hold an edge like no bodys business. (To be honest mine was a bit rough out of the box which led to a major argument with fällkniven. But once I got my hands on a good one it quickly became a favorite.) Sadly I'm not a millionaire. And its a €400 knife (but if you see my wife divide that number by 10) so I cant get you one. But it stands to prove, reliable folders excist and the knife most likely to become your survival knife is the one you have on you all the time, a bomb proof folder is a pretty good investment.

This shows the Ganzo 440C heat treat is very decent. Survived such abuse through stone and steel, still cut paper. And even take pellet gun shots. Ive seen other videos you guys done of supersteel break under less abuse. So the ganzo is a great edc. Lose it, wont cry as hard as a 700 knife. Just another 20 bucks. So whar if you got to sharpen everyday. A few passes on the diamond stone, a few strops on chromium oxide leather and then razor sharp. The super steel, imho, as better for firesteel scraping as it doesnt dull due to the high vanadium carbides.

Hi!!! Sorry about my answer, not time. What you say about cs master hunter vg1 and falkniven f1. What better?

Vg1 is not a great steel. Even Vg-10 is not on par with modern steels. Vg-10 still has a good balance but Vg1 is just a plain budget steel so for me definitely the f1

Just subbed to your channel yesterday, great videos! I was wondering how a Cold Steel folder would hold up to bushcrafting? They're always shouting about how tough their folders are. Also, I had a Buck 110 Hunter since I was a kid, and the tip broke just like on your Ganzo. Buck's 440c is supposed to be tougher than most, but I guess it's a bit brittle. I heard that high-carbon steels are more brittle than others, and shouldn't be used for prying, but you said that tip breakage shouldn't happen with any knife. Every time you baton on the tip of a knife, I cringe... but I guess they're made to stand up to that?

Hey mate. We own many knives and their tips can handle the hardest swing with a baton. I have batonned many many hours over the last few years and I never had a good quality knife break on me. even Mora's tips held up great. Modern day knives can withstand a lot. Folders ofcourse are not made for batonning but from a decent fixed blade you might expect that it is sturdy enough to baton fist thick logs . For me cold steel knives are mostly toys. They focus on selling with a coolness factor not with quality. They do have some quality knives but most of them are overpriced for what they are. I do have good experience with there cheap kukri. The sharpened edge was also coated so I had to sharpen it before I could use it but it's good value. their folders are more for teenagers that like big folders I guess. I would love to destroy one hehe.

Folders are fine in the “big city” but if your outback/in the woods you need a fixed blade, as you demonstrate.

Nah, I live in the middle of nowhere and I would rather have a folder and a hatchet then a fixed blade sorry

There is only ONE folding knife worth considering for you two. It is the Battle Horse Knives Tree Frog! A folder that is actually as strong as a fixed blade. I LOVE mine, it is a Super blade! Please look it up. If you need one for testing let me know....as long as you send it back!

did that ones lock fully engage? i find if u buy those knock off axis lock knives u have to check the lock pin engagement and if it is not 100% take it apart and file the blade a little bit so that the pin engages otherwise its not really safe imo.. i bought 4 different elan ones in 8cr23mov and only one came with full lock up.

+natsyrt m the lock was perfectly fine in my opinion but batonning puts so incredibly much stress on the knife, that I wonder if any folder could handle the power.. But that doesn't make it a bad folder. It rather says something about the user using the knife wrongly hahaha

yea folders are not made for that kind of abuse.. maybe a benchmade adamas other then that i dont think many would survive.

Nice video but If it cost $5 shipped than it only cost $.50 to make. Fixed blade or folder is your choice but my Benchmade folder would never fail like that or I would not carry it.

the benchmade will to break as easily as this one but I still wouldn't want to use it for batonning. It's no problem or issue because these are just not made for those jobs.

I agree folders are less than ideal for bushcrafting... but please keep in mind by no means is this cheap chines clone a good representation of what folders are capable of. I would be curious to see the same tests done on something like a Cold Steel Large Voyager or Large Recon one clip. As far as lock strength goes, Cold Steel is among the strongest, at lest production wise. And they aren't all that expensive.
