A classic car connaisseur adresses the weird and problematic trend of redesigning logos in the auto industry. They all turn into black oversimplified designs with no identity, uniqueness and originality. What is going on?

There is an old saying in the ad business: "Everybody wants the same type of different." I've been working in the ad business as a creative on many of the biggest global brands, and while many people think there is some great conspiracy or masterplan behind why companies choose similar design or brand strategies, the main reason is much simpler: Fear. Fear of not being modern/following the trend and fear of losing market share by being too different. I worked for Coca-Cola for several years, and they always asked us to come up with something "never seen before". After many many iterations and proposals it always ended the same way: They'd pick something almost identical to last year's (effective) campaign and tweak it ever so slightly. Fear drives more branding decisions than you'd think. Just look at Bud Light.

As a former graphic designer, IMO the new KIA logo could have been "saved" by a very simple thing: keep the new Star Trekkie font - the letters have good dynamic flow, BUT... simply decouple them with just a wee bit of space between them (technically called "horizontal character spacing"). For people who didn't like kia (a majority of the US population), the new vague logo makes the company less recognizable. I have heard a great deal of people say, "I really like the design of those new KN cars" only then to be shocked after they learn it was actually a Kia. However, for other well established and liked brands, it makes much less sense as they do not need to trick people into liking their brand.

My job was actually feeding into my depression because when I was asked to design posters, boards, labels, UIs, and whatever, the clients always asked for flat tri-tones. White, black, and for variety a "pop" colour like aqua, light blue, or rose gold were the most common palettes they went with. Seeing this stuff over and over again and trying to explain to clients that drop shadows, gradients, and separator elements were indeed ADA compliant and were not "out of date" wore me down. Same goes to Dacia (proving you) but for that brand the new logo and look is waaaaay better than old one. Actually anything could be better than the old one. Here we called that old logo "The Beer Opener". My big sadnesses were the Audi and the Citroën not to mention the Peugeot. The latter is a complete goodbye to the old traditions of the brand. As a former Peugeot owner I definitely loved the "boxing lion" and I cannot relate to this new logo. That is cool lookin' (especially if I compare to new VW or Pontiac or Caddy logos) but a completely different, "floating" brand, with no traditions to connect. For the KIA logo, I don't know... I definitely like it. The old one was just a typography, not a great logo at all. The new one reflects to the new design style of the brand (that I like a lot with all those diagonal lines and almost, but not completely surfaces). And this trend goes even further. For operating system UIs, I am sure they sacrified the usability for being uniform to others. Why? I still use Windows 7 on some of my computers because I can see there which window I use, what is the program I use, where the cursor is, etc. For two computers I use Windows 11 and I always feel lost with those very ugly, flat, dull and merging windows that don't give any visual clue but the most subtle-and make it extremely difficult to tell where I am currently. I really and actively hate all Windows after the 7, though a very tiny improvement is visible on 11, but that is still a piece of er... sheet. "Flat, dark and boring" is even more descriptive for UXs than car logos (and industries). And then... All you might have seen an add that urges you to change your original handwritten signature logo to their uniquely uniform and indistinguishable script logos. As if they say "STOP being unique, stop being you, be invisible among the others to avoid any customer to turn up!" Thanks guys, and sorry for this rant and wall of text. :)

I like (scratch that, LOVE) flat logos, and there is a contingent of people who actually like flat logos. They are just not as vocal or prominent as the negative side though. And I get why. Some say it ruins character, meanwhile I believe logos are a bit of a signature. They symbolize. Period. There were phases where those signatures were a bit complicated, sure, but if you look at it this way, you’d understand why it’s the essentials that count. 3D logos have a bit of gaudiness to them (but can be great when pulled off well, cough cough, Porsche, cough cough), but what the modern brand needs from them now is the essential signature. To reach an understanding with the customer. That’s what these new logos signify.

Plus, because many human beings are now considered "surplus population" (all credit to Charles Dickens and his Ebenezer Scrooge), what corporation even has any trace of thinking "that the customer is always right?" Who cares about what customers think when we few crony capitalist companies control what's available through most of the world for those fewer and fewer humans who can afford innovative and individualistic products? Does anyone reading this remember those "Sux" cars of the first "Robocop" movie? It was set in a supposedly "future" dystopian Detroit. Well, it seems that they were almost depicting reality news reports of their time, but that have become all too real nowadays!

Ed, this is your best review I saw and your every word is gold. This trend (not only in car industry and logos) makes me absolutely furious. This era could have the motto "Don't be yourself, merge into the masses!" and this tendency of blending in is a major device to create mindless herd from even those few people who still are able to think, have an own opinion and understand others. Because these abilities are dangerous, these make them less controllable and harder to scam (either by criminal people or governments and sometimes I am not sure what is the difference between the two. Especially here in Hungary.)

Graphic designer in motorsport here. A monochromatic logo is easier to work with with regards to what background you place it on. If it's a dark background you make the logo white, a light background you make the logo black. If you have a detailed logo with chrome and shine but then you need to place it on a chrome/light grey background...you can't make the chrome black and thus the logo becomes hard to see against the background. Smaller point, it's easier to print, uses less ink and photocopies far more cleanly.

I think when companies say they're redesigned their logos to be more modern, they're not saying or designing the logo considering how it looks on the Car like in the older days, but on how it looks on a Screen. Think for a second, car brands are trying to been seen as not a company that services cars, but services, and for them, making the logo look good and presentable and changeable on Mobile screen or on a Web page takes priority when designing a new logo. Basically, that's the reason why all new logos are black and white, is just a monotone version, so when they put a picture profile or change the color of the background, they don't have to think if it meshes well with the logo, if it doesn't look good they just change the color, for me, that focus on social media and internet is why carmakers logos are getting flat and rid of their colors, so they can look good on a screen and have any color the company wants at the time for the presentation of something with their brand attached to it.

I like the minimalism. I always thought the shiny logos with the depth perception thing looked cheap and plasticky and became outdated very fast. They had this 90's feel of being overloaded with bright colors and bling-bling, like an upcoming rapper in the late 90s who just got his first 500k paycheck from the studio and is going on a cocaine fuelled 48 hour non-stop party night at the club until the facade of wealth and power falls apart when it inevitably ends in someone overdosing. By the way, Opel just announced a new logo like last week or so, which is kind of a simplified design, but not a simplification of the current logo, which is already just flat black. It looks a little retro but also futuristic at the same time, I quite like it. The same goes for the Citroen logo, which is based on the original logo from 100 years ago, combining heritage and history with progress and modernity, as well as the Peugeot logo which is based on a 1960s design. Lotus is also an example for simplification well done. Getting rid of the bling, but keeping the colors, giving it a very early to mid- 20th century look. Some brands indeed went too far with the minimalism though, Cadillac without the colors just looks a bit weird and combining Jaguar and Land Rover, two brands known for making two types of vehicles on the complete opposite of the spectrum, makes little sense (though I believe it's only the parent company that got the new logo, Jags will still be Jags and Landrovers will be Landrovers). But I think one of the worst updates was made by GM. They already had a simple, kinda minimalistic logo, their new one looks like an app icon for the 250th Chinese ebay clone.

What I see is that most brands are undoing that 3D-ness they added to their logos in the 90s or around, something I saw as ugly at the time. Think for instance about the Fiat logo. I don't think that the later ones are superior to those they had in the late seventies or 80s. I think many of them are trying to get back to a basic or earlier instance of their logo. Sometimes for the best and sometimes not so much. For example the new Peugeot logo is a lion head like they had in the 60s but I think they got it really ugly this time. And one that got better is actually the Kia logo even if its unreadable ( do you read mercedes in their logo?) the old ones were completely forgettable.

The chromey 3D logos were modern 20 years ago, replacing old flat ones. But the whole history of each company emblem is also interesting. For example the Cadillac one had more details like rows of ducks and several colors, and Peugeot had various versions of the whole lion body and I guess it's now down to the head. Ford didn't use the Ford script version much for many years but used an invented multicolor family crest and lettering, then brought back the old time script version in a blue oval.

It may be worth looking at how these logos are used in practice, that is, in the context of brochures, websites, ads and on the cars themselves. I strongly suspect one of the reasons for a monochrome-black logo is to allow for more colorful rest of the media. If you for example look at old videos uploaded by Cadillac, their thumbnails had to include a white triangle to put the logo into, while the new logo can omit the triangle and stay legible - or, as legible as the Cadillac logo gets. Because even without color, it still is a very complicated shape which I for sure couldn't draw from memory. Also, small mistake at 1:50, what you are showing there is not the new logo of the Firefox Browser but rather the umbrella brand. Under this umbrella you find the browser, but also Firefox Monitor, Firefox Send and Firefox Lockwise, each with their own logos.

Weird how car brands choose to silhouette their car brand logos, but when you see their latest cars, you see the same silver (some are LED). The future is lame, because it make cars not only to worry about designing a complex car design, but it turns cars black, white, or even silver, just like today. Why can't the car brands make their cars with many different color patterns, like 50s cars? Do they think eye-catching colors are just too immature for their cars, and thought black, white, and silver are mature colors for a car? That's so bland. And they should also make their logos colorful, too. Imagine all the identities car brands have if they made their logos and cars colorful? Why do people want the future to happen immediately, if everything's gonna be white, black, and silver?

If someone had a similar logo, but yours is very detailed, they may point out that theirs is different enough. 2. Easy to see at a distance. A lot of auto makers especially BMW used the front grill design as part of their brand. The move to Electric Automobiles, means the Grill is no longer a functional part, but a liability in airodynanics. Do you can be like BMW and try to simulate a kidney Grill design, with a fake monkey butt plastic grill, or you can make sure your logo can be seen from a distance. While I don't like Kia's new logo. It's old one was much harder to spot from a distance. Which was Ok when Kia made boring cars that blended in with everyone else. But they are now trying to stand out especially with their Electric Platform which in my area is second only to Tesla.

(Similar, but different: when cars had model names, it was easy to figure out what it was, and where in the marked it was placed. Pretty sure the proliferation of numbered cars, { like T1000, j2000}, and just letters {STS, MKT, MKS, etc} made it so nobody could figure out what you were buying). Lincoln was one of the worst.

Depends aswell tho any modern Fiat that literally just spells out "FIAT" in gigantic letters over the entire front and back just looks absolutely terrible. Wish they'd kept their red ring that said Fiat honestly looked much better on cars. Atleast the Abarth logo still looks good. If done right just letters can look really really good but Fiat completely missed.

I hate with all my guts all the simplified and flat design. It is soulless and boring

Lancia (which, believe it or not, still makes cars) recently updated its logo. It's oversimplified but at least it retains the blue background

This needs to be a t-shirt or a poster of some sort. Haha. If that ever happens I’d have to get it signed. Lol.

It is just like I've said about all utility companies for the last bunch of years. A television cable company has nothing in the name that let you know it is TV cable. Electricity supply companies such as encore says nothing about that they are Electric providers. Before RadioShack went out of business they were calling themselves The Shack. Pizza Hut corporation changed their name to The Hut. It is obvious that all the corporations don't want you to know who is who and who owns what. It is the most irritating stupidity that I've ever seen in my life. 🤨

This might be your best, most insightful video yet, 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Today’s auto companies are facing an existential threat from both regulators and disrupters such as Tesla. This silly new fad wiping out the unique character of their brand logos perfectly illustrates the destructive course these companies are blind to correct. It’s really quite depressing to see the groupthink into which they all have fallen. 😢 Who is crazy enough to think it is a good idea to introduce a new boring Ferrari logo??? 😂

An excellent commentary on the race to the lowest common denotator in logo design. Thank you for speaking out!

It’s kind of funny how the 1920s logo could pretty much fit within the modern design when it comes to Ford.
