How To Drink

5 жыл бұрын

In Back to the Future Part III Doc Brown is revived using Wake Up Juice, I recreate it, and then develop it into a cocktail!
**********************************
Back to the Future Part III came out in 1990 and it's a movie I've seen... honestly more times than I can count. I'll be blunt: I prefer parts one and two, three is great! It's just not the same as the other two, BUT, It's Part Three that has the ludicrous beverage Wake Up Juice, just begging to be an episode of How to Drink. So this week, that's what I'm doing. I make Wake Up Juice more or less as seen in the movie, and then I rework it a bit into a bourbon morning-after drink. Not bad! Hot and spicy, and not for everyone, but uh, not bad!
I'm collaborating with Curiada.com to make many of the spirits I use on the show available online: bit.ly/H2D-WakeUp-Spirits
Wake Up Juice
One Barspoon Cayenne Powder
One Barspoon Chili Flake
Two or Three Barspoons Onion Powder
Two Barspoons Mustard Seed
Four Barspoons Tabasco Sauce
Muddle & Grind
1 oz. or 30 ml. Olive Brine
2 oz. or 60 ml. Bourbon
Shake over Ice
Pour unstrained into mug
top with seltzer
Garnish with Chili Pepper
Most of the tools and gear I use on the show can be found on my gear page at: bit.ly/H2DGear BUT, here's a couple of links that everyone is almost always asking me about:

You need to develop a drink called 'The Black Hole' - after scientists were able to actually photograph that one recently - it's so huge that it's actually much larger than the distance from the Sun to Pluto, and so powerful that if it were in our solar system it would devour everything in a matter of a few days. If it were just outside our galaxy, the Milky Way, it would devour the entire galaxy in a matter of a few thousand years. Nothing would be left. Now is that inspiration for you or what?!

@J.M Perez That's absolutely ridiculous, right because tabasco has no scoville rating right? It's made with just vinegar. That's why it's one of the greatest selling "HOT sauce"s of all time. They should just serve vinegar in a bottle with a tabasco label on it eh? Maybe YOU don't THINK it's spicy but that is your OPINION, my guy. It is in fact spicy AKA hot, because scientifically it has peppers in it which make it that way. I mean, what you were said is almost the same as saying something stupid like "oh chocolate ice cream isn't cold it's chocolate" just straight dumb. We get it your a badass you don't think Tabasco is spicy, but it IS, regardless of what you THINK.

@@brandonballcheese5704 you are spot on, these guys are just in a KZfaq dick measuring contest of some sort. Tobacco is generally marked at 3750 scoville, right around the other top hot sauce brands. I don't like it because I don't think it is particularly good. I prefer either Cholula or Tapatio. I just think the flavor is better (more complex). There is a bar in the Florida panhandle that makes a sauce that has carrots in its mix. That stuff is my favorite by far.
@JackPorter
@JackPorter 4 жыл бұрын
@@joejoelesh1197 it's a very different product, aged in barrels adds a ton of acidity and sour. the others have much more fresh tastes obviously because it's a very neutral process for making those. just because it's marketed as hot sauce doesn't mean all hotsauces taste the same or give the same experience. hot sauce just means a sauce with a pungency. i'd agree that fresher hotsauces go better with most foods so it doesn't overpower, tabasco on its own tastes great so in bloody marys and other drinks where it's the center player it's totally doable. but for food i generally make my own hotsauce to get that really fresh taste. tabasco to me is like buying pre spiced rum instead of spicing your own rum and controlling what goes in it.

That's pretty much it, I think. It's not actually supposed to magically remove someone's drunkenness, it's supposed to pretend to taste nice long enough for a drunk person to drink a whole bunch. Then, when it's too late to stop it, the "cure" melts every nerve in their face at once and the pain keeps them awake for a while.

Once upon a bar, i once had an interesting alcoholic beverage that was deceptively spicy. The bartender told me to keep thy mouth shut once ingesting the liquid. That should i open my mouth, my tongue would be set ablaze with holy flames. And the drink was good and mildly spicy. Ithink he had a few screws loose but i should've heeded the warning for once i did open my mouth, my tongue did start to burn... and worse, every time I went for a drink(water,milk,juice) any liquid that I tried that night just make the burn worse. The bartender called that drink: THE UNHOLY GREEK FIRE. Unfortunately he did not share with me his recipe, i totally would've pranked my friends with that marvelous cocktail.

Ever notice the young-looking man in the background holding a glass of beer? He grimaces in disgust twice in this scene: 1) When Chester calls on Joey to make the Wake Up Juice, the man grimaces as he clearly knows what’s in it and what it does. 2) When Marty is pouring the juice down Doc’s throat, the man is leaning over his shoulder and his expression of amused anticipation turns to disgust, presumably as he gets a whiff of the potent fumes such a concoction would produce.

Interestingly, this drink includes large amounts of three different kinds of heat that affect the body in three different ways, so no wonder it was hot! I'm not going to include the acid in the vinegar, which can cause chemical burns, because there was such a minute amount in the Tabasco. Mustard is in the same family as horseradish and wasabi, they activate your pain receptors, and vaporise easily, burning your nose and head more than your mouth. The vapor dissipates much faster, while capsaisin binds to your receptors. The capsaicin in chili causes irritation and activates different pain sensors, which some people enjoy as your brain starts sending endorphins to soothe the pain. Alcohol is theorised to dissolve the lipids and release the capsaicin, which can explain your craving for whiskey after drinking the mixture. Alcohol lowers your heat tolerance, making your own body temperature feel too high. Cold water lowers the temperature in you mouth and throat, so water on top that was a good choice. Nonetheless, these three together in these amounts sound quite painful. I applaud your tenacity.

It’s actually a genuine trick to hangover cures. The headache is usually caused by an alcohol crash (like a sugar crash, but alcohol), so re-introducing a little helps to keep it away, and when that alcohol is gone, the resulting headache tends to be far weaker in comparison.

The real wake up juice contains an ENTIRE large sized bottle of Tobasco sauce. Even if you’re only doing a small amount of the cup, there needs to be several ounces of Tobasco in there to match it. That aside, this was fun to watch.

Back in the late 60s/early 70s......I remember returning to my old junior high....where we put on these big musical productions every year. I'd been in a couple of them.....but now I was in high school, and went back to see what the following class would do. I think I went thru the old man's liquor cabinet & mixed 4 or 5 types of alcohol....like some gin, vodka, whiskey...whatever he had on hand....put it in a canteen & it was off to see the show. I believe my old drama teacher recognized me & threw me out. LOL

When I was a child growing up I also wanted to be a scientist and just like you I based my idea of what a scientist is from Doc Brown. When you mentioned that I had a really good laugh because our idea of a scientist was is absolutely madness. Our ideal scientist was an unemployed maniacal madman with a house and garage full of gadgets, machines, and nonsensical inventions who has a sports car powered by a nuclear fusion reactor that allows him to go on insanely wild time traveling adventures that constantly upsets the balance of the space time continuum! Needless to say when I discovered that this isn’t what a real scientist is, I was a tad bit upset.
