That you can't count days in Lothlorien is also true in Rivendell, according to Bilbo, at least. He says 'I can't count days in Lothlorien.'

Boromir's horn is split by Lurtz's third arrow, but off camera. You see it whole at Boromir's hip when he has two arrows in him, then Lurtz takes aim, then you see Boromir's face as he reacts to the third arrow hitting him, and then there's a full body shot of Boromir with the horn split. (I've always assumed they forgot to get a shot of the horn splitting, so the best they could do in the edit was keep the impact of the third arrow off-screen.)

I wish the Fellowship of the Ring movie emphasized Frodo's spiritual journey too. Well, I guess I wish the same for the entire trilogy. Like how he can see Galadriel's ring, not because she shows it to him but because being a Ring-Bearer, he can see the Unseen World more clearly than, for example, Samwise (who only sees a star on her finger).

I get why the Argonath changes were made, it's still a fantastic scene. With the axes, I think they are emblems of authority as shown in the Bayeux Tapestry -- once with Count Guido, and again with Harold. Minalcar, who built the Argonath, favoured the Northmen, perhaps even so far as adopting their symbol into the royal regalia.

I'd forgotten Galadriel's farewell to Aragorn. I think it might be a nod to the ending of the Lothlorien chapter, where Aragorn leaves the hill of Cerin Amroth "and came there never again as living man". Cerin Amroth is intensely significant, maybe a different film will show it one day.

As for the Scouring of the Shire, Farmer Cotton gives a rough timeline: End of last year: Lotho selling stuff, ruffians coming in. After New Year: Lotho calling himself Chief Shiriff, after the Mayor's arrest. September: Sharkey comes in, things become even worse. From Tale of Years, we find that in year 3019: Sep 6th: Saruman comes to the Shire. Oct 30th: Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin enter the Shire. Thus, Lotho's takeover really takes place at the start of 3019, and the Mirror of Galadriel scene happens in February 14th. So yes, the events do overlap, although I think that the vision that Sam gets is post-Sharkey's arrival, so still in the future at the time. Especially given Galadriel's words about it.

@@napoleonfeanor I just wanted to mention exactly this fact but you beat me to it :D Imo it is a hint to Saruman's already messing around in the Shire before they leave.

The Argonath in the movie does wield an axe, the one on the left at least.

What I remember about the Argonath from the books is the way the boats are going swiftly through the rapids, the wind blowing all around them, the great stone kings seemingly daunting the party members, and in the midst of this chaos, Aragorn stands resolutely in the boat and says "Fear not! Long have I desired...!" In the movies, Aragorn murmurs the "Long have I desired" line reverently as the ships sail smoothly past the statues.

Your video analysis of Tolkiens work is by far the best on KZfaq, others just seem to be in it for the $$$ which is quite clear. Anyway, I wondered could you do an episode on Tolkien spoilers in his own books, e.g. Merry getting a scar which ‘stays with him for the ‘rest of his days’. These things as an adult reader now really bother me as it suggests he lives a long life, therefore the quest succeeds. Maybe I’m reading (pun intended) too much into it but wondered on your thoughts?

Ooh I shouldn't have watched this video! I forgot how much I loathed Jackson's version. From the moment he has Galadriel's voice over say that men succumbed to greed I knew it wasn't good. I'd been forewarned by an interview where he said he had to 'punch up' Faramir's character. Jackson didn't understand the motivations of the characters or the nature of elves. He admitted he was a hobbit wannabe. Dwarves were greedy (which resulted in the Balrog) men, especially the Numenoreans feared (0r hated) death. The greed trope literally made me want to throw up; put me off my popcorn. Faramir is a tragic character. He lived for his father's approval but it was Boromir's athleticism that Denethor admired even to the point that he sent Boromir to Elrond. Faramir had the vision and only when it was not answered did Boromir have it. If Denethor had respected Faramir enough to listen to him, Boromir might not have died as he did. He also misunderstood the Nazgul by having the earth 'revolt' at their presence. Remember the creatures crawling out and onto the Hobbits in Fellowship? Nothing of this earth would react to the Nazgul as they were spirit, not corporeal. I also take exception to many of his edits. The Council of Elrond could have been told via vignettes or flashbacks. Jackson dismissed it as unweildy because it was a bunch of guys sitting around a table talking.... !!!!! Someday someone will make The Lord of the Rings into a great movie. Maybe I will live to see it.

When you spoke the chat between Aragorn and Boromir In Lorien you forgot Aragorns words to Boromir In Elrond's counsil. He speaks the statuettes of Elendil and Isildur In halls of Denetor and he Don't look like Isildur because he is Isildur'S Heir not Isildur himself and his life has been long and Hard. That is clear reference for Aragorn has been In Minas Tirrith In some point.
