For all his faults, Peter Jackson clearly knew the story he was adapting to screen. And superfans know this because they noticed those little details that only a fellow superfan would bother to mention.

I agree calling them Easter eggs is better than fan service. The latter typically tries to draw attention to itself whereas the former sits quietly and if you know, you know!

The best part of Aragorn singing about Luthien is when when Frodo asks him "What happened to her? and Aragorn answers, "She died." Its great because if you know that Luthien went to Mandos to sing for the love of Beren, then you know they both came back to live again, although no one in Middle Earth was allowed to see them again. But of course, Luthien was an Elf, and became mortal, because she loved Beren, so they could both die together in the end to experience the Gift of Illuvatar. And since Elves don't die in the same way as mortal men, Aragorn's response is both summarizing the story of Beren and Luthien, as well as alluding to the fate of Arwen, his true love as well, who also chooses mortality,

Aragorn singing about Beren and Luthien is an excellent moment in the film especially when you know that Arwen and Aragorn will also be separated by death albeit under better Circumstances.

Another detail Peter Jackson included that the casual movie goer would miss is that in the mines of Moria, the fellowship comes across the three doorways. One that goes up, one that goes down, and one that continues on. I read fellowship and double taked when I watch the movie again at that detail included that i never noticed before in the movies. but its totally shown in the books and the movie doesn't draw any attention to it

I like Legolas' smile when Gimli tells him that he asked Galadriel for "one hair from her golden head" and she gave him three. Gimli didn't know the story of Galadriel and Fëanor, but Legolas did.
@TolkienLorePodcast
@TolkienLorePodcast 5 ай бұрын
Did he though? He wasn’t a high elf so it’s a bit rash to assume he’d know. But it IS important because the book marks Gimli’s devotion to Galadriel as the start of he and Legolas becoming friends.

@@TolkienLorePodcast Considering that both Galadriel and Legolas' father and grandfather were in Doriath simultaneously, it might not be THAT surprising that Legolas heard the story, especially as Feanor was not liked by Thingol or Galadriel. This story might even be more likely known by him if he is a child of the Third Age, which to me seems likely.

It's always amused me that Frodo knows enough Elvish to understand what Strider is singing about, but doesn't know "mellon." In the book it makes sense that Merry doesn't know that.

Merry and Pip are both super smart and resourceful even with Elvish lore including the one ring through stealing looks at Bilbo’s books and speaking with elves nearby the shire etc. Phil Dragash audiobook is amazing. So much ambience and brings all characters to life. ❤

I’ve watched the movies before reading the books so my frame of reference is different. I do remember when reading the details about the wine and the fireworks. The books had so much detail, I would say maybe a bit too much. It was definitely enjoyable reading though.

We may not literally see Frodo ever leave Bag End so Sam in the movies, but I think it's pretty easy for a film audience to intuit, given that the final scene of RotK is a visual of Sam returning to Bag End and being greeted by his wife and kids. Clearly it's their home now.

What I can’t comprehend is the amount of detail they put into the set for Mazarbul. The walls were covered in runes as accurate as they could make them, yet you don’t see any of them. The scene lasts a few minutes, then it’s over and the set gets deconstructed for something else and that’s it: gone… 🤷🏻‍♂️😵‍💫.

12:20 Good point about Sam not getting Bag End in the films. When Sam tell his wife Rosie "I'm back" in the last seconds of 'Return of the King' it doesn't look like he's gone home to Bag End. So in the films, who got it I wonder? The Sackville-Bagginses?

Aragorn not merely tells a story that would liften the Hobbits' spirits. Him envoking heroes of the First Age is continued as the Moon and the call for Elbereth stand with our heroes against the Nazgûl. I would have preferred if the movie had Aragorn address the Hobbits as in the book

That's a bit sad to hear. I guess I can kind of see how you may not be a fan of them if you were expecting an exact 1 to 1 retelling of the books. But is any movie adaption of a book that you really like? Because I can't think of any major motion picture that got more things right than PJ's LOTR. Also, was it one major thing that turned you off from it, or just a collection of all the stuff that PJ changed.

Also, please don't take this as being combative. I'm just curious whenever I hear people saying they genuinely don't like the movies as a whole.

Can't say that I disliked the movies, but I can't say that I liked them either, as I'm a bit of a purist. I can say though that I 'enjoyed' the LotR's movies (even parts of the Hobbit movies in isolation). Mainly I objected to the Arwen shoehorning into the plot. I can forgive writing Bombadil out, as he doesn't add to the plotline, and feel J.R.R. shoehorned him in. Although I have no problem with the more correct interpretation of the Eowyn plotline; probably as I'm still secretly in love with Miranda Otto 😊

The films are undoubtedly excellent from a technical standpoint, the adaptation of the story is lacking sometimes, but I see the books and films as existing as separate entities. What needs to be remembered is that the films are not canon and I find it disheartening when everything people know about the lore is from the films, which is often incomplete or just flat-out incorrect. I watch the films to enjoy them as entertainment, but to experience and understand the legendarium, I go to the books.

There were a lot of pointless additions and deletions. My biggest beef is that Jackson did not get the nobility of the characters, most especially Aragorn and Faramir. The scene where he has Frodo and Sam attempt to deceive Faramir about Gollum is unforgivable. He just didn't get it.
