Thank you so much! I’ve recently gone back to jazz classes after 40 years. Im 73 years old. My teacher is 85! She placed me in her intermediate class. She teaches Bob Fosse style almost exclusively. My previous Jazz training was eclectic,. I’m somewhat familiar with Fosse technique. But there’s a learning curve to get up to speed with Fosse’s moves. I I’ve been practicing your choreo on this video and I’m ready to progress to your next level. I’m so grateful to you for helping me learn this dance style which I dearly love! My dance studio only teaches adults. We/they put on shows twice a year to raise money for charity. I’m so looking forward to performing again!

1969Vanessa G I just said this to a gentleman last night. I was watching A Chorus Line yesterday, and I noticed a few of Bobs moves that MJ borrowed and enhanced . MJ was not the first to wear the silver glove. It was Freddie Mercury. 😜 There is a famous quote about this “Geniuses steal”. It talks about all of mans really great achievements both artistically and scientific are stolen. Really it just means they are borrowed rearranged and built upon. 🤗 Definitely true.

This was choreographed by Ann Reinking, not Bob Fosse, and it’s not truly in his style - Ann’s version of that style is less organic and less fluid. This choreography isn’t the same as what Fosse used in 1975 - it’s completely different in this number. If you compare Ann’s recreation of Fosse’s steps for the Hot Honey Rag with the 1975 version Gwen and Chita did, you can see just how much more rigid the former is. It’s not bad, just different. The latter is very elastic, very organic. Same is true of recreations of Sing! Sing! Sing! from “Fosse” done by Chet Walker and Ann, with input from Verdon versus the original from “Dancin’!” - Tony Awards version is on YT. Big difference in fluidity. Likewise the recreated “Nowadays” from “Fosse” vs the 1975 version - it doesn’t even have the hands in the infamous “dripping blood” position or crossed in a v specific way atop the canes. I think the recreations gave the overall shape correctly but the fine detail was skipped. If you watch Dancers Over 40 videos they talk a lot about the difference between Fosse’s work and Ann’s “Fosse-inspired” work (like Chicago) and her recreations of authentic Fosse pieces (like one number of Chicago and all of “Fosse”) - the original US Tour Roxie and Velma recreate Nowadays and the Hot Honey Rag and talk about the meaning of every movement and why they were told to do things - and then you see those fine detail moves are often missing in the recreations. It’s a shame there isn’t more footage of Mr Fosse’s original work really as the 1996 Chicago and the review “Fosse” are held as exemplary of his style but are not quite the same. It’s kind of like a game of “Chinese whispers” - a little is lost with each step.

@@TheSpinDoctor I thought that the only song that Ann didn't re-choreograph was Hot Honey Rag. I thought she left that one as simply the original Fosse version.
@TheSpinDoctor
@TheSpinDoctor 4 ай бұрын
@@fernandoanthony63 You’re right that the HHR we see today is a recreation of *a* Fosse choreography from the 1975 production, but there is no “the”: Mr Fosse re-created and modified it for every pair to suit them. He was a great believer in adaption to match the specific dancer. Gwen/Chita had one version, Ann/Lenora had another, Penny/Carolyn (tour) had another. Liza/Chita was the same as Gwen/Chita owing to short notice, but for the rest he reworked it to suit their bodies and their strengths and their characterisation, above all. There are interviews with Miss Reinking on here where she talks about when she did the 1996 version, she phoned Miss Verdon to ask if it would be okay and she said (paraphrasing) “sure but do you want to use my version, your version…?” and Miss Reinking just used the one she knew from when she went into the show with Lenora after Gwen and Chita had left, as she could remember it and it was only an Encores! concert, but it stuck! If you compare the versions in “Chicago” today (of which there are at least 4 iterations that I’ve seen, with the ending changed two different ways so work without the cartwheels and also different footwork in the first “travelling to stage left downstage” section at the start, to deal with ankle issues) and the one from “Fosse” (which had Gwen’s input) and with footage of Gwen/Chita and Liza/Chita and Penny/Carolyn (all are on YT), you’ll see they all start the same until after the “strut” (the “travelling to stage left one in back of the other in step” upstage part where there’s usually applause!) and then they diverge and become really quite different from then onwards. They have commonality but lots of differences. The overall feel start to end is quite different too - Gwen/Chita did it very loose and organic to suit their Roxie and Velma but Penny/Carolyn and Ann/Lenora both had “tighter” versions overall to suit theirs.

Mr. Fosse created the vocabulary for "Pippin" based on "commedia dell'arte" gestures. In commedia dell'arte theatre each role has their own characteristic gestures. When Ann Reinking choreographed the revival of Chicago in 1996, she used this specific moment from Pippin wich is kind of a presentation or bow. It's now part of the "Chicago syllabus", we call it a "Pippin" as a reference to Bob Fosse's 1972 iconic musical.
