Definitely something worth doing in Bonsai because it promotes root growth & prevent root rot even in a bad soil mixture. But the drawback is that the tree need to be watered on time because the soil dry up faster.

Really good information. I have been very close to starting some of my trees into a pond basket that I want to thicken up. With the way your trees look, I would be well advised to do so. Maybe my big ole elm could use it 🤔

Very well produced and I only wish I had learnt this a lot earlier in my journey. However, no good looking back or crying over spilt milk...unless your one of your cats of course. I feel that is an investment I may be making sometime this year, although my kids did get the hint and get me some ratchet secateurs for my birthday. Top stuff.

Great video Jason. I've seen those baskets in home sections of shops and always wondered what they would be like. I did question if the plastic was durable enough and could handle the sun light but it's probably the same as a pond basket

I’ve been using these for four years with no degradation whatsoever. I guess it depends on what each individual product/manufacturer used to make them. I definitely swear by them for rapid root development and you can wire the trees down into them and spread out the roots very effectively. 👍

Plastic comes in different types & quality. The cheap plastic ones will change its color but dont worry it wont fall apart right away. From my experience the one that are smooth & shiny are good.

I let mine get pot bound in a flower pot for round a yr or two. Then add 2sizes up flower pot, add a layer of soil at the bottom then put original flower pot with tree inside the bigger flower pot, not repotting, then add more soil on the sides. This promotes root growth through the bottom into newer soil, compost is best and all that has worked for me.

Hi Jason, after visiting Japan this summer and my husband giving me a bonsai for my birthday, I'm developing bonsai fever! I've already purchased several pre-bonsai plants and am attempting to air layer our fig tree as well so I have a thick trunked tree to play with. I've really enjoyed your videos. They are so well done and informative. Can you please provide an estimate on the dimensions for the larger rectangular basket? Thank you for the time you've put into these videos!

I'm brand new to bonsai but have been veg gardening for a few years. For the exact same reason you use pond baskets for root development I grow chillis and tomatoes in fabric grow bags that allow good aeration to the roots. I haven't seen these used in bonsai and I'm wondering if they'd serve the same purpose or is there a reason I haven't seen them used that I've completely missed? 😂
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden 7 ай бұрын
I expect they could work but perhaps there is an issue of longevity - with trees you are talking several years development whereas with chilli’s and tomatoes you start afresh each year? How many years use would you get from fabric bags before they degrade?
@bigdayve1
@bigdayve1 7 ай бұрын
@@TheBonsaiGarden ahh of course, that's most likely the reason. I can expect several growing seasons from a grow bag but they only have a plant in them for around 6-8 months of the year whereas a tree will be year round. I've got an abundance of bags though so I'll give it a try with one tree.

Nice Jason! where did you get the black tray from at 4:43? Im looking for one exactly like it! I tried B&Q but no dice
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden Жыл бұрын
Hi Bradley, that tray came from the garden centre. This one was among the potting/seed trays which were of varying sizes. This one was one of the larger sizes. Also for repotting purposes I have a much larger one which is a mortar/cement mixing tray from a builders merchant which helps keep the soil and mess together when working my larger trees.

To develop trunk and nebari, which is better ground or basket?
@TheBonsaiGarden

Growing in the ground will always be better since it gives the tree unlimited access to resources, water and nutrients. A tree in the ground will thicken up much, much quicker.
