When I first started playing bass, I was super focused on practicing scales. I got to the point where I could play them pretty fast, but I always felt like something was missing.
The problem was that I’d learnt them in a fairly boring and predictable way, which was totally disconnected to any other aspect of music.
But scales are AWESOME if you approach them in the right way.
In today’s new video I’m going to show you some actionable exercises that you can start using right away to make your own practice more musical.
And if that sounds crazy, you’re right, it is - but they work… and it’s easy. And pretty soon, you’ll be able to reach for ‘that note in your head’ a lot faster.
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

Yeah this shit really helped me A LOT. I have been having what is basically a mental breakdown every time I am supposed to take a solo. I am so damn happy he tied it all together like this. Terrible music KZfaq channels always make clickbait vids about "suck at soloing? DO THIS ONE THING", and then they just show you some average dumb ass shit like a single box shape for the Pentatonic scale. But this one ACTUALLY explains shit. Hell yeah.

This!!! More of this! I love the useful application of years of obtained, yet esoteric knowledge. This kind of stuff has been "The Missing Link" of my 40+ years of playing. That's why I have always been a strong support/groove player (and worked a lot) but never felt like stepping out front and doing a practice session in front of an audience. Well done Scott! Please give us more of this.... and perhaps dedicate a course or two towards this in SBL! I have been a member for many many years, but this is the first time I have been compelled to stand up and applaud! Well done indeed!

I like the exercises you covered in this vid. The HOW, and WHY, or rudiments (in drumming). Keep helping us to understand the building blocks... Scott. Like you said, the solos will naturally follow. Every great bassist seems to play their own style, anyway. We must learn to master the (hidden) SYNTAX, and make it sound like real music.
