After a lot shopping around on Craigslist for a used sliding compound miter saw, we decided that it just wasn’t worth it to do the Craigslist shuffle and opted to buy a new one. We decided to go with the DEWALT 779 (the precursor to the DWS780, the only difference is that the 779 does NOT have the laser guide). Follow along our unboxing to learn about this saw and why it is awesome! I have had my 780 for a year now and love it. Out of the box I had to make only a minor adjustment to the blades verticle angle to zero it out. For dust collection I attached mine to a ridged shop vac rather than my larger central shop vac. My only issue was with the soft rubber boot at the front of the dust collection tube. The boot collapses with the shop vac but I took a small piece of wire coat hanger and fashioned it into a small triangle and placed it in the boot and problem solved. Thanks, really enjoy your guys videos and commitment to going off grid. I originally bought the 779 but returned it for the 780 for a few reasons. Actually the 780 does't have a laser system, it has a patented shadow light system. It casts an led shadow on both sides of the blade so it never goes out of alignment even if you change the blade. Also the blade on the 780 is a better finishing blade although for rough cutting the 779 blade is probably better choice. Also, the 780 was on sale and included the DWX723 miter saw stand which normally sells for $200. The stand is portable and very well made.

Nice review thanks! Very useful to see the sliding arm function in action. I am going to buy a miter saw finally to finish a project without borrowing my friends saw anymore. I read that for detailed bevel cuts of molding, frames, etc, the 10" blade has less wobble than the 12" blade, so aiming for the 717 model over the 780 12" model like the one you reviewed. Of course it does not do bigger pieces of wood. The blades will be cheaper too on a 10". Thanks again for your demo and review, very helpful!

Most of my tools are Milwaukee or, sometimes, Ryobi. However, I own the 780, and it is awesome. I'm sure by now you have figured out that this saw is a beast. My favorite thing about this saw is that it holds square. Also, it has a ton of handy features. As far as having a laser, it isn't so much about using it to measure your cuts, not for me anyway, but it helps line things up quickly.

Nice review. I bought the DWS780 a couple months ago. It's just downright fantastic. I saw some other comments about stands for this saw. IMO don't get the rolling one, if you haven't already. I got the DWX723. It doesn't have wheels but it is plenty light enough to carry by hand and will easily accommodate a 16' 2x12.

Dewalt are great saws I had one for years and then sold it to a friend and ended up buying a Bosch 12" Double glide to build the house. I am pretty happy with it and you will be pretty happy with the Dewalt she won't let you down there are built like a Timex and will keep on cutting. TFS

Nice saw. Use to work at a Black & Decker plant that built several models of Dewalt miter saws and other Dewalt tools and B & D electric mowers. About 2006 they closed the plant & moved production to Mexico.

+lou ollstedt I hate knowing these tools aren't made domestically. Our votes with our money matter and if I could have found an older model made in the USA, I would have paid for it gladly. Sadly like so many quality tools finding one is very difficult.

Nice addition to your "investment" in tools. May I suggest that when you plunge to make your cut, you keep the saw at the bottom of the cut when through the material, releasing your finger off the trigger and then wait till the blade stops, then bring the saw up. You will be cutting irregular materials and it does not take much for the off-cuts to get picked up by the set on the teeth as you withdraw the blade.

I agree about the laser, it always gets dirty or shifts around, i just leave it off and just manually check before cutting.

The fixed stops, typically at 30°, 45° and 90° are probably "good enough" from the factory for framing. You need to double check them before you swap back in that high tooth count blade and make any finish cut. Use a metal "square" to check for 90°. Then make 2 -45° cuts and see if they come out to be 90° and the 3 - 30° cuts. For finish cuts, you will need a blade with a lot more teeth.

Just our wallet hates us after a trip to the store LOL. Many of my Dewalt tools are 10 years old, the batteries started failing this past year though :(. Bought the 20V to 18V adapter today to extend the life of my tools, the adapter looks like Dewalt 1/2 ass thought about it, but it does work, looks ridiculous but works.

Can't go wrong with DeWalt! I've had mine for 20 years and have built all kinds of stuff. Although mine doesn't have the slider.

+Jack George That was our thinking Jack. We're not diehard attached to any brand and I've run many DeWalt sliders in the past and loved them. Hopefully we'll get 20+ years out of this one and like you and yours, it will build many wonderful things. The slider is great. Cutting 4x12 90 deg single pass....AWESOME!

You pay more up front, but you end up with a tool that lasts forever. I don't use mine every day so I went on the cheap side and bought from HF, they work fine, but if I had to use them on a daily basis I'd go with a brand name tool for sure.

I notice you have one of the little wheels that fit onto the blade guard not fitted and I think I saw it sitting on the bench next to your saw.. Strangely enough my DWS 780 saw had the same wheel free when I pulled my saw out of its box the first time. I found the wheel in the bottom of the box and was able to refit after Dewalt sent me a replacement spring washer... Strange that we both had the same wheel not fitted properly. Other than that I live the saw, with all of the adjustments... This review was one of the reasons I ended up buying mine.. Thanks for the unboxing..

I never had a problem with the screw lock.. But i would like a spring loaded slide.. Secondary angle?.. compound miter is what i call it.. Harbor freight 12" is a death trap..should be outlawed.. Good demo..

Nice saw i use Dewalt tools myself i ran a construction co. for 26 years.Just a heads up some of the Dewalt tools are built by Black Decker and made in mexico.Thats a real sad thing to know.I had to get some bushing for mine and had to go to the Black Decker store to get them.The saw is awesome though hope it serves you well.

It should serve you well mine has lasted for years i did take the 12 in blade of and put a 10 in on because it makes the saw run in less of a bind when cutting smaller stuff.Have a great day my friend.

The only thing I wish the Dewalts had were a slower start motor, you touch that button and it's full on power. When the motor kicks on it can easily move your piece just a hair or two if not clamped down. Other then that it's an amazing saw, and I understand why most wouldn't want a slow start motor like the Makita's as time is money when on the job.

I'm not a fan of dewalt tools but I do own this compound miter saw and I love it. I've had it for 10 years and it's still accurate. I kind of want that new Bosch glide miter saw though. It looks amazing. Cheers

+James WB We're not hardcore any brand, but the DeWalt saws have a reputation and of the half dozen or so I've used I loved them all. I tried a few others including the Bosch which had a pretty snazzy hinge mechanism. At $750 currently the cost of cutting a board is getting ridiculous lol. Maybe if they release a limited edition.... haha!

My wife bought me the same saw for Christmas. It's in the garage and I'm waiting for the big day to take it out of the box. I ordered the light parts for the DWS780 which should give me a 780 for about $120 less. Is any lubrication needed on the slides? Thanks for the excellent unboxing video.

Some of the Amazon reviews are saying that the slider arm gets stuck when pushing through the cut on this model. Now that you have been using it, do you find that happens at all or could it be a flaw with just some of the units being shipped out.

You do a nice "unboxing" video. I have a very similar DeWalt. I did add the laser afterward, as a third party device, which works wonderfully, and less cost than the factory option. You must have never used the laser, as it speeds your work and accuracy - for example I kick on the laser as I'm sliding the workpiece to its mark. W/o laser you need to position, check, reposition, check, etc, etc. etc. Dewalt sure makes nice compound saws. Please Keep the videos coming.

+Pure Living for Life The lasers are pretty common ad-ons. There are three or more on Amazon for $25-45. Mine is most like the Oshlun ($24). These are battery powered units - I've been using this one for at least 4-5 years and the little button cells are just now dying out. I wouldn't have my main saw without one. Not sure what mine was - I think it was a Craftsman. Pulled it from my old chop saw that I put it on (its a backup saw now). Basically, the laser guides mount like a thick washer on the side of the blade. Mine did reduce the depth of cut on my 10" saw by a very small amount: so you may want to look at diameter measurements of the laser unit before purchase. Yes - they are WAY cheaper than what DeWalt wants to soak us for one. We can relate to where you are at in this - except we pushing 60; some think we are too old for this. We bought a fixer - lived 3 1/2 years in a 21' trailer (no surround). Then it took another year for me to get the rest of the house "on-line". Now I'm working on getting the small orchard (just planted 17 fruit trees) and upper garden done, and then onto some solar panel/generator system work. The work never ends on a Homestead. If you're ever up near Portland we love to have you for a visit (we are in Woodland 40 miles N. of Portland). Don't get discouraged, just keep at it and it will finally come together. I have used this saw and it is a great working saw. the only thing thing I don't like is it's weight which is 60 pounds buts feels like a 100 because its awkward to carry

I have the DWS780, and it doesn't have a LASER. Instead, it has a high intensity light that shines down the front edge of the blade to cast a shadow of both sides of the blade on the work. I think the shadow is better than a LASER, since it shows exactly where the kerf will be.

just a heads up, the fence is adjustable so you can move it out of the way on compound mitre cuts. if you don't adjust it the blade will cut into your fence when tilted and angled!!!

Haven't done a video yet on the 20v MAX system I am building. Overall, the 20v MAX DeWalt system is the bomb. Digging it...using them everyday. I have: flashlight, area light, circular saw, saws-all (chop saw), drill, and impact driver. Needing a jigsaw and cutting tool.

Both saws will get the Job done but I'd op for the 780 or the corded/cordless 790 with the XPS shadow light. I have the 780 and love it and the XPS system is always accurate as it's a shadow of the blade rather than a laser that you need to adjust when switching blades.

Do the OEM 779 to 780 XPS upgrade for $60 shipped. It will always be 100% accurate. LED shadow, not laser.

Good saw Buy another blade, then when one is dull, and they get dull, then you send it out for sharpening, and you have another blade to use. In face you might want to buy another general purpose blade and a say 40T fine blade. I'd also spend the money for the DEWALT DWX726 Rolling Miter Saw Stand, it will make the saw a joy to use, move around set up, and it will also make the saw a LOT safer to use, yes safer, safety first! BTW my Hitachi slider has a laser on it, I did not want it, but I got the saw almost new for cheap. I am now a convert, the laser is adjustable and it really is a nice feature, just saying. Domo

+StuInTokyo Agreed! We actually have a bunch of 12" blades since we have several saws. I'm still looking for a good source locally for saw sharpening. A precious resource at this point in the game! We'll be looking for a used miter stand. Those seem like they come up from time to time and people want a pretty penny for them unlike the saws. Theres 3 non-rolling stands on Craigslist right now, but we'll hold off for a rolling stand. I'd be curious to try a saw with the laser, but unless it had performed flawlessly for years I still think I'd be double checking my work every cut anyway. For this purchased the 780 with laser was $250 more than the 779 model sans laser. I couldn't justify the $250 for a laser guide I wouldn't trust for a while. That said they include a free stand with the 780, but it's not the rolling stand... lol

Dual bevel means that it tilts to the left and the right. It has nothing to to with the swing of the saw

My son wants one but I figure at 30 he can buy his own. Besides I bought a 45 horse Mmahendra for the ranch that he gets to play with, so I figure 35k will last a few years like the 8 it takes us to at for it. Lol

It might seem accurate, but without a properly calibrated right-angle square you will never get a true 90 degree cut. As a test, cut a 2x8 and then stand both pieces on the short side and flip one board 180 degrees and put the cut ends together... if your cut is truly square there should be no gap between the board ends, if there is a gap then the saw needs to be calibrated. DeWalt saws are awesome, but they are never square between the blade and fence.

just paid 946 USD for the same saw here in Finland so what? Nearly double the price. The reason for the comment was the MINI-MILL chainsaw setup you have there. I been the replace some logs for our sauna here and I'm guessing this would do the job as there not very long. Do you have a video on the MNI-MILL system?

Jealous! Good looking saw! Make sure you show some more use of it in your other videos later on! Would you use a different blade for wet (fresh downed)wood as opposed to dried?

+Jon Wojcik Totally! Getting lots of footage as we speak! Everything working as it should. It's a heavy saw though so we're already finding that the table has to be VERY stable to get the best cuts and the smoothest sliding motion. Apparently we need to up our sawhorse game lol. The factory blade seems to handle green wood and dry wood great, but I'm sure for finish work we'd want a much finer tooth blade as this one is pretty aggressive like for lumber and posts etc. As of now with green pine posts and joinery we haven't had any clogging problems. We'll be doing an update in the future with things we run into.

Just bought this model today. Do I need a special blade to cut 4x4 treated wood, or will this blade that comes standard with this saw work? Thanks.

Elvin Black no special blade needed if used for framing the standard blade will be just fine.

lol....Thats not a handle on the bottom part of the casting.....thats there so you can position it on either a 2x4 or a 2x6....to make a quick stand on a job site....just fyi.

There is no double bevel! Tilting the blade is the bevel. Using the front handle and rotating the blade is the miter. Having the bevel and miter adjustments makes the saw a compound saw and if it slides back and forth makes it a compound sliding miter saw.

+Nivag L It's heavier than our Honda 3000 Watt Generator! LOL But that's actually desirable since a heavy base reduces the chance of wobbly cuts. In the future we'll likely invest in a rolling stand to make transport easier. Storage? Good question! In and out of lockup as we need it for now. We need a tool shed BADLY!

+anthony marino TOTALLY. At the end of a long, hard day (as we just had), not fighting your tools is priceless. This evening, we fought dull saws and smaller tools, but we didn't fight this saw!

@Bat-Amgalan Demberelgaldan We use 110 volt in the US for normal outlets. 220 volt is used for more powerful machines.

Festool is over-priced for no better than they are. Makita or Dewalt make great tools, Ryobi has some good tools as well as Ridgid.

Dewalt don't use lasers for a guide. The xpr led castes a shadow of the blade and is 100% spot on! Big mistake not getting it!

Why all those omg another long unboxing? is your homestead about commercial stuff and promotions? I for one would like to know more about your planed permanent water solution, plans for power. your garden, what to grow why and how Thumbs up for finishing your septic! And why is the hottub a must have? Building your hottub before house and barn really confuses me? PS loved the frozen song, best vid yet :-)

Getting the project done is first priority though! :) Remember, you're not the only one who watches our videos, so while this unboxing might get on your nerves, someone else considering a similar purchase might find it very helpful. +Pure Living for Life I'm not a fan of the unboxing either but many people like them so continue on if you'd like. I like it when you later have a post-heavy-use video when you can list off what you like and dislike about a product. I particularly loved the solar oven series since that is exactly what you did and showed it in action. I've had this exact saw on my list of "to buy" and am just waiting for a sale. It's pricey all right.

+JayXX That's a great attitude! Give a check at Home Depot if you have one nearby. They have them on closeout for $399 at the moment. If you buy the 780 they include a fixed stand which is a $99 value and the 780 has the laser. We waited over 7 months to buy hoping one would come up on Craigslist or an estate sale. Just couldn't wait anymore. With all the projects piling up we had ot do something and happened to be in the store getting a few plumbing bits and Alyssa saw the $399 closeout. Took me an hour to sort of out why it was "cheap" as I've never seen one for less than $600. Great feedback on the unboxing > use video sequence. That's what we try to do. In fact we have in the queue a bunch of follow up reviews after months of use of some tools like our RV garage post winter, Makita drill set, Honda Handi Generator etc. We know we appreciate these videos as it does help decide when you're ready to purchase.

+vaultsjan What was sad about the B + D drill unboxing was the previous drill I had lasted me 10 years and was the PERFECT drill for $100. I did a full demo and remodel, build an apartment, build handrails and decks with it. The new drill was JUNKKKKKKKK. Battery was junk, charger was junk. Sadly we can't know these things when we do an unboxing. That's why it's an unboxing! Usually we do a follow up video to share our experience with the tool / product after some time. That's when the real truth comes out.

I know you guys are on a budget but please stay away from harbor freight, 90% of their stuff is crap, that's why its dirt cheap. If you're looking for throw away tools that you'll only use once or twice and not care if they get stolen or broken, then harbor freight is the place for you.

+Tyson Burns Agreed on Harbor Freight. There are many things you can get there that are the EXACT same product you'd buy elsewhere. Like we buy ratchet straps there, towing accessories etc. It's all the same stuff you'd buy at a hardware store etc. That said my dad has a lot of their tool and BLEH! Junkkkkkkkkkkk. It looks like a tool, says it's a tool, but once you get to working with it you want to scream! However there are times like you said, it's a one off job and you just need a tool to get the job done once. Like weird automotive tools etc. Can be a lifesaver then!

Some of that also depends on the buyer and their ability to properly setup the tool in the first place. 8+ years on my 10" compound miter saw, and 3 years on my 12" both from HF, they work just fine once you get them adjusted properly as with any tool, proper initial adjustment is key to proper tool operation. Sure if I were using them on a daily basis I wouldn't have went with HF, but for my occasional DIY projects there was absolutely no need to put a $700 saw in my shop that sets idle longer than I ever use it LOL. Add to that, that from about October to March or April I can't really use my tools as my shop isn't exactly warm in the winter to allow safe tool use without having to wear layers of clothes and work by candle light LOL.

this miter saw is complete shit. the only good thing about it is that the blade spins enough to cut through material. ive had mine for only 3-4 years and the paint on the bevel gauge has completely worn off from saw dust hitting it like a sandblaster. the cheaply made blade guard flexs so much that it will easily hit the blade of the saw as its spinning (and it has, several times). the rails stick so much that when i slide it back and forth my entire table starts to tip over from the force that needs to be exerted on the saw. the locking pin broke off. the fence needs to be moved out of the way of the saw when cutting bevels or it will either hit the motor, stopping the saw from being able to slide properly or the blade will cut through it. it worked perfectly for the first couple months up until i found out the hard way that this saw makes it impossible to work in even the slightest drizzle of rain because smallest amount of moisture will completely fuck up the rails
