In this video I review the Dewalt DCG412 18V XR cordless grinder which benefits from Steel cut spiral bevel gears, housed in a low profile jam pot gear, the grinder also has an Intelligent trigger and lock off switch a guard that can be easily adjusted with no tools and a 2 position side handle which makes switching from left handed to right handed use very easy. There is also a quick change wheel release button which locks the spindle enabling the knurled flange nut to be easily removed. I bought the grinder for £109 from ebay- fave.co/2h5q6kg
If you are in the States this grinder will be marketed as the Dewalt DCG412B 20V MAX

I can really understand how you are becoming a big Dewalt fan. That angle grinder is very impressive. Those bolts are some of the hardest bits of steel I’ve ever heard of in a bolt. Great review of the angle grinder. Thanks for sharing

I have just brought my second one of this model because my original was stolen.I see your comments are 5 years old lol but thought I'd comment any way. I am a refrigeration enginer and for my job this is perfect impressive power and my thoughts for the brushless model the grip Is larger and trigger action makes it harder for using in awkward positions so this is why I prefer this model. Also I belive with the entry brushless you do benefit from longer run time per battery.

I use mine in fabrication, engineering, automotive, around the house and garden in fact it’s my first choice ( I have seven others to choose from) saves my two dogs ragging the cord around the garden as is so portable and versatile I would recommend it to anyone. If you have the XR battery system get one on your your Christmas wants list quick. Thanks to UltimateHandyMan for another top notch review, without him I still be in the dark ages! RetroSteveUK Grinders have hundreds of uses for the typical & advanced homeowner. I am a more advanced user because I weld; however, I have already burned out a few electric grinders with my daily stuff. One cordless grinder use I found particularly helpful related to me replacing my car's rusted subframe. I found a solid subframe at a local junk yard but all the bushing bolts were rusted tight. Since you can't bring torches or electric tools into a junk yard, I took my cordless grinder with me and buzzed right through those rusty subframe bolts. As I said, grinders have hundreds of uses!

I converted to Dewalt as my cousin has 18volt tools and it means that when we work together we have a lot of battery power at our disposal. I've used and abused my Dewalt tools and I must say they really do take some beating. I normally buy body only for the very reason you state. I'm looking for this sort of tool and whether a corded or un-corded one, so this has made up my mind which one to go for. Thanks so much for the review 😀

Hello again, your videos are really good, well made, well thought out and edited, and, best of all no background music! Actually though, I should stop watching your videos because I am spending a lot of money. I nearly rushed it and bought this grinder using the link that you provided, I realised that this particular Dewalt is not brushless. The Dewalt brushless model though is £80 dearer. I must admit that I probably won’t use it that much. Your thoughts would be much appreciated. Thank you and pass on my kind regards to Wayne Burgess.

I think it would be a toss up between the Dewalt in this video and the Bosch, although the Dewalt accepts the larger 5" discs, so I'd go for the Dewalt 👍 I've never tried Metabo, Hilti, Festool or Fein as they are too expensive for most people. Looking forward to your future DeWalt reviews Chez, although in my case you’re preaching to the choir, lol I have many of the 20V XR tools (as they are marketed here in the US, even though they’re actually 18V, not sure how they get away with that...) the most recent purchase was the XR version of the compact reciprocating saw, very handy for getting into tight spots, like between wall studs... Have the Flexvolt batteries made it to the UK yet ?, I’m sure they have. Last Christmas one of the big box stores over here had a deal I just couldn’t refuse, I bought the 60V ( actually 54V ) Flexvolt Grinder, they were selling it in a kit with 2 batteries and a fast charger for the price of the bare tool ! I don’t really have much use for a grinder, although they ARE so versatile fitted with the right disc, but bought it mainly for the batteries ~ the Flexvolt batteries are backwards compatible with the 20V tools and provide even longer runtime than the XR batteries ! You should put one on your grinder and see how many more cuts you could make on that bolt ! Thanks for another great video Chez, I’ll be looking out for the next one, 👍🏼

Thanks Tom, we have the flexvolt over here (54v) but if you use it on a 18v machine it's like using a 6AH battery. I will look out for any flexvolt bargains or other 18v XR tools as I'm slowly building up my collection after selling my XRP power tools. I always look out for bare machines versus machines with batteries as you point out, sometimes you get a great bargain which is cheaper than buying the bare tool. Thanks for the comment ;-)

Ultimate Handyman that is not the case my dcd996 is xrp and is fully compatible with all my xr tools and the Flex volt batteries.. I have had a little look at some sites since posting first question and it looks like it is just a premium or heavy duty version of the xr range. Obviously just a marketing ploy but is a fantastic drill, that is coming from a life long makita fan boy as well. I know there were previously xrp tools on a different battery system which I really was not a fan of.

that's some machine. One general question regarding angle grinders: the flange nut on my grinder (like most I think) has a step on both sides. On one side the outer most part is raised higher and on the opposite side the inner most part is raised higher. Depending on which way you screw on the nut either the smaller or larger circumference will be touching the disc. Do you use a certain direction for different types of disc or do you always just have the wider circumference side in contact with the disc for the larger surface area?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 6 жыл бұрын
The side with the step on it should only be used when mounting a grinding disc as they are much thicker than a cutting disc. I covered this in a previous video (it's a few years old now) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ga2bd8af2bO7fZc.html Thanks for the comment

The flange nut [AKA the lock nut]: You've asked a general question about any & all brands of grinder, but it would be foolish to give a general answer for safety reasons! The user guide for my angle grinder allows for the nut being flipped either way, BUT the correct way depends on the spacers used, spindle length etc & it says which way to 'flip' the nut. I reckon you need to consult the instructions for your model - they'll be online if you don't have 'em to hand.

I agree this is one of the best 18v grinders on the market and is very handy, but it won't stand up to the abuse as well as a mains powered grinder purely because of how small the gears are inside the head. I recently took a broken one apart and it looked like all the grease had stuck to the lid of the gearbox rather than lubricating the gears and as a result it was only fit for the bin so it might be a good idea to check yours is well lubricated. It had a strange green grease inside.

4:45 Just a bit after this time stamp, you can see the cutting disc breaking down and raw fiberglass and friction material coming off in an orange-brown coursed fog ... the disc is just about used up! :) .. This is because the disc itself is passing by the cut material WAY below it's idea 80 metres per second cutting speed (atual "linear metre per second cutting speed" slows naturally as the disc shrinks in size) What I do? ... Is stop cutting and save these now about 3" diametre discs to use in my little Dewalt Cut Off Tool :) A bushing adapter is needed but they are cheap enough ... OR?? .. you can find a washer to fit fairly easily ... for 22mm to 10mm arbours' size difference The cut off tool runs much quicker RPM s the disc has another full life in it!

Hi Jo, I'm not sure about in the US. Over here we had the old 18v XRP batteries which were suitable for XRP machines only, the newer machines are XR batteries, all still 18v. For some reason they market them as 20v in the states. From what I can see by searching Google it looks like the batteries for this grinder are 18v XR in the UK, but 20v Max in the US.
