You should market yourself as an independent third party testing facility and become a national standard for this type of testing! Would be great to see a TTC (Torque Test Channel) sticker on the side of an impact driver someday. I'd actually trust the numbers on the box at that point.

It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.

Great review as always, I like the fact that you mentioned depending on "how your tool is used" can make a difference, you don't always need the most powerful and absolute fastest to get a job done. I own Milwaukee and rigid tools but I'm still impressed with the little DeWalt👍

I bought the Gen3 Milwaukee and had full intention of replacing my Makita 18v. Needless to say it may have been slightly more powerful but it was like riding a Chinese rickshaw down a cobblestone path and the Makita is now my main impact driver again. The Makita was just so much smoother.

Id like to see yall accept one from a company and then buy one off the shelf and see if they are the same

I've got the dcf850 with the powerstack battery and I absolutely love it. I'm a forklift tech so I use it on anywhere from 6mm to 23mm bolts and nuts and it does great. Of course I'm not dealing with things like rust that the automotive guys get but it works well and is compact to get into places

By the way, I have my impact driver as a multi purpose do-all tool for things from carpentry to appliance repair to driving lag bolts, but I probably use it the most doing automotive work. I mostly like these little tools because they can get in there and turn off those long winded bolts really quickly. Even if I have to break the fasteners loose with a breaker bar, then hit them with this the rest of the way out, it really saves me a ton of time. I never was interested in the 1/2 or 3/8 cordless impacts I had used years ago because they weren't putting out any more torque than these little guys, and they couldn't do anything else. My interest in them wasn't piqued until I saw your videos on the newer ones that are rivaling some of the best air impacts out there. Since I've already got the batteries, you've really got me thinking about one of these cordless Makita impacts, because I really do hate having to wrestle with the air line, and with the socket going directly on that tool mandrel, a lot more compact than even my cordless impact driver. I think one of these things is in my near future.

Reliability has never been a problem for Makita but performance certainly hasn't always been their strong point, I'll still own a Makita any day, hopefully the reliability and craftsmanship doesn't ever fall off because that's what keeps me coming back

I've loved my last gen Dewalt Atomic 20V driver. I'm not the nicest to tools, and it has handle everything that has happened to it (left out in rain, stepped on by horse, etc.) without any problems.

That Makita makes me wonder if it was broken, lol. Very bizarre how that driver acted. Great little Dewalt, for sure.

You need to try the dewalt atomic with the powerstack battery. The faster discharge rate of the powerstack seems to make a big difference. Or at least with the hand dyno and actually using both batteries on this new tool. Love the content.

I bought the Makita 40v a year ago and I absolutely love it. I’m in construction and I’ve used it for everything from drywall screws to large grk and lag bolts. The trigger is so soft that you can feel everything and use it for very delicate work such as mounting hinges on doors as it only impacts when it meets heavy resistance. To me an impact driver doesn’t need to be crazy powerful, if you want torque for large lags then buy a small impact wrench🤷🏼‍♂️ I’ve used both dewalt and Milwaukee and they don’t come close when doing delicate finishing. Also the new batteries get you over twice the battery life.

You guys should test some 3/8 drive impact wrenches. Unless I'm missing them I don't think you have. I feel like it would be pretty interesting to see how they compare to the bigger sizes

Nice job with testing. I have and love that milwaukee, but if I were team yellow I'd be quite excited for the super compact impact.

I yes bought the new DeWalt Átomic driver, is a beauty it doesn't hesitate to put screws on 2x4 the best tool I ever bought this new year..

Having just bought a DCF850 for 99usd + shipping and tax to my country via home depot and a freight forwarder I'm pleased with what I saw here - I didn't realise it matched the old 887 in performance, that makes it a no brainer IMO.

That new Atomic is what DeWalt should have originally released in that lineup.

It would be great to see more on the Flex tool line. I decided to switch from my 18V Makita over to the 24V Flex, until more of the Makita 40V line is released, tested and reviewed. I'm a builder by trade and can quickly sift through the gimmicks. I think Flex is on to something good.

Awesome testing as always guys! I'm sure glad that I didn't buy Makita's first attempt at the 40v "xgt" impact driver as it seems a bit underwhelming compared to td172. I absolutely love my Japanese 18V td172 and this test definitely makes me appreciate it even more after seeing it slightly beat the new DeWalt on raw beans alone here.

That Makita must have lost the silicon lottery or have a bad motor or something. I have had the 40V impact driver and it can torque and loosen 200 FT-LBS without breaking a sweat. My 20 year old 18V Makita can put up the numbers you were getting.

Love the DEWALT tools but either way you can’t go wrong with Milwaukee or DEWALT both great tools. Thanks for the post really interesting

In wood where these are usually employed, impacts-per-min would close a lot of the gap here until they are up against something one driver can move and the other cant, like the tight bolt here. Just been testing the 850 and excited to see where dewalt goes but tempted to try out milwaukee but kinda wish knew when gen 4 was coming out. But might test out gen with current sales. And m12 line.

Cool tests. To get more complete 'performance' result, there should be a power test as well. You know, torque x speed = power. Some of the lower torque devices can screw in some things faster when the real power is similar.

It's like golf, the brand with the lowest voltage sells the best beans.

In my experience using impact drivers in construction its speed that starts screws and too much torque strips screws. The weight is critical when hanging it off a toolbelt and carrying it around.

I will take smaller, lighter drill over higher max torque. Just purchased DeWalt with power stack battery pack. Awesome! Beside smaller size, the flash light is much improved.

A few times now you've asked about "if the spring and hammer/anvil are unchanged, can 40v make a difference?" and the answer is that it certainly could. The power of the impact is determined by 1. Mass of hammer/anvil, 2. Leverage/diameter of the same, and 3. Speed of the motor. Every time the hammer smacks the anvil, the load on the motor spikes and the RPM decreases, then it has a tiny amount of time to speed back up for the next impact. Higher voltage could theoretically help the motor power through that load spike without losing so much RPM. It could also give them the overhead to put in a heavier spring for longer sustained blows. That said, the performance here of the Makita is strange. They possibly could be electronically limiting it, or perhaps the performance was already being limited by something other than loaded RPM so extra voltage changed nothing.

Honestly I've used that Milwaukee driver for driving screws into standard lumber and it's almost too much torque/power for that job. Gotta turn it to it's lowest setting or really feather the trigger

i would just say, as someone who primarily works on cars, the reverse (release) torque is by far the most important for that, the bolts tend only to be corroded in place when loosening them, and require way more than "torque spec" to get loose.

Just curious why the steel plate and style of bolts changed when the Makita is on the test? I can't imagine it would be related but its a variable so I was curious Edit: nvm looks like it changes back and forth for both tools

My mother got me a dewalt atomic tool set as a wedding gift. Came with a sawzall, impact driver, angle grinder, drill driver and two batteries. Im in no way a professional of even an amateur handy man but they are more than adequate form me as a first-time homeowner.

Surprising results. I have owned all of those impact drivers except the Dewalt, Flex and TD172 (own multiple XDT16’s). Milwaukee punches harder than any Makita, so much so it often backfires with insta camouts. But I have not at all had the experience that the XGT is less powerful than the 18v counterparts (TD172 is very close to TD171). In fact, the reverse: the motor is larger, the gears are larger and the hammer is larger on the XGT and 10” long GRK’s notice the difference. XGT wasn’t here when I still owned the old and new “Freak” models, but the XDT16’s ran circles around the new one while a toothpick bundled up with masking tape was a more competent impact driver than the original. You showed the control panel in the video and it was set to maximum torque. Knowing Makita’s consistent QC (and, really, only smaller niche companies ship QC inconsistencies) with their products from the inside out, I really doubt they shipped one any different than the one I own. So, my question is, why are my experiences not lined up with the test results? Makita has the least amount of runout by a large margin and with the XGT being at the top. That has something to do with it I suppose. But what else? Would love some input.

An impact driver is for driving screws and fine adjustment… as an electrician. I found the makita xgt so much better for that with it’s fine tuning…. You literally explained it yourself with the other 3/4” driver being available if you actually wanna socket some bolts. I feel like this is testing a single very small aspect of what makes a good impact driver

With these smaller driver style tools or smaller impact wrenches is there anyway to design a test that is repeatable to see how long they are useful? IE: driving x# of screws for xhours on 1 battery?

Really not sure why dewalt would change the selector for the impact wrenches but not the impact driver 🤦‍♂️ Maybe if there is an XR version they will add it

I was using 886 for 6 years. While Dewalt was hibernating and Milwaukee couldn't build a collet right, I switched to Makita xdt16z. 4 speeds, 4 modes, convenient programmable mode button above trigger, two lights, glows in the dark, superior collet.

i think maybe you have a dodgy makita, iv seen multiple tests with the 40v going head to head with the 18v japanese ones and it beats them...

maybe you should add a torque per weight rating aswell for these smaller or mid size tools. I think its important to consider.

Re do the test with the power stack battery's. They were made to go with new tech in tools(dcf850b) for way more power then standard lithium batterys

Think the makita one is just so people dont have to lug around 18 and 40v tools and batteries. In a real situation you rarely need mote beans than the makita delivers. Then id assume they just get a impact wrench.

As you suggested, the Makita is basically the 18v version driver rewired for 40V. Certainly not a recommended purchase by me, and I've avoided stocking it for this reason. They may be working on a new one, but this one is basically a filler for if you don't have anything but the 40V tool.

You really just can't argue with the milwaukee.. every test I see it in that tests it's power and utility, they dominate .

Can you guys compare brushed vs brushless from the same company? Like the milwaukee 18v brushed impact driver vs brushless impact driver. I assume brushless is quite a bit better, and I suspect the M12 brushless may be close to the M18 brushed? And of course do the other major brands as well.

In my line of work, dragging a 1/2" air hose attached to a 1/4" ratchet all around vehicle, taking off small body panels, various other broken parts, huge pain in rectal orifice. I've grown so accustomed to my 12yr old Ryobi brushed impact driver, I won't go back to the hosedragger(and I've used a work buddies new DeWalt.! It's got twice the power of my old Ryobi, and it's 1/2 the size.!?). If I had $5,000.00 to blow on tools, I'd have 2 of each 1/4",3/8",1/2"(in case of breakage.) impacts, and a single 3/4" drive impact, and ratchets, and 90°,3/8" impact drivers.

I'm not making any excuses for Makita, I own a plethora of M18, M12 and Dewalt tools, to complement my Makita line up where they lack in selection, but Makitas always been behind in pure power. They're more focused on precision work and longevity over making the most power. I've had the DTD171 since early 2019, and to be honest in the real world, I sometimes have to knock it down to speed 3 because speed 4 is way too fast and uncontrolled or cams out and slips. If i ever need to drive lags or something, that's where I keep the M12 Stubby in my truck to come in and do those jobs. 1/4 impacts aren't a do-it-all tool, even though you CAN do a lot with them doesn't mean you should.

I recently replaced my Dewalt 886 for the 887 and then converted the 886 into a 3/8" wrench driver . I'm a Dewalt loyalist and don't care about who's better...cause it all works for me.

You should test out milwaukees brushless line up not quite fuel but not brushed of course i have a 1/4 brushless laying around if you need a test subject.
