This is quickly becoming the best part of my Sunday! I had heard of those analogue systems but hadn't taken the time to do the reading. Thanks DF retro, now I have a way to enjoy Dragon Warrior 4, Game gear and game boy games on one display (love the inclusion of the info regarding the new LG OLED screens in relation as that is probably going to be my next primary display!

Just picked me up a Noir. The inclusion of Sega Genesis support is really amazing. Also, the new power of the upgraded FPGA is a welcome addition to an already outstanding console. Thanks for making this video! Its always a special treat to watch your Retro coverage!

Thanks for another great DF Retro video :) I had no idea the Anologue Nt Mini could play ROMs of Game Gear/Colecovision/etc. 8-bit systems too! That's incredible.
@NightSprinter3 жыл бұрын
Minor correction: It isn't that the NES lacked the pins, just they were wired up to different ones on the 72-pin connector, which were then wired to the unused expansion port on the console's bottom (hence why a resistor mod is needed to hear such audio from a flash cartridge, or a Famicom adapter properly-wired up for the expansion audio to the NES slot pins after the mod).
@mattlandry7 жыл бұрын
If any tech noobs are wondering, you won't properly see the sprite flicker he's referring to unless you are watching the video with the quality set to 60fps

@Dant21427 жыл бұрын
Kevtris has been working on a similar console for years called the Zimba 3000. It will be able to accurately simulate 16 and maybe some 32 bit consoles in hardware like this, but that's a few years away. FPGA prices need to come down and Kevtris needs to reverse engineer more consoles first.

FPGA's are God's gift to mankind. They certainly aren't cheap or easy to work with currently but they leave the door open for us to someday get perfect clones of SNES, N64, PS1, etc.

Wait... You missed what was done for parallax scrolling in Metal Storm... It overlaps. I would have loved to hear what you would say about it! ;) :)
@roberthanthonymartinezrive73837 жыл бұрын
Good Review John :), regarding the DF minute section: Metal Storm and Joe & Mac are no slouch either (J&M if i'm not mistaken on NES features up to 5 or even 6 layers of parallax scrolling).

I ask the same I asked on the NES Classic review. How about latency and how do they compare between each other an other products like retron and a raspberry pi running retropie? The real test is: Can it play zapper games over crt?
@justanotheryoutubechannel5 жыл бұрын
delaorden The Analogue NT and NT Mini using an analogue connection will work perfectly with lightguns on a CRT. The Retrons and NES Classic are incapable of light gun support, as they only output digital signals. If their signals are converted to analogue, they *might* work, but I doubt it. I’m not sure about Raspberry Pis, but chances are they won’t work properly unless they are modified to include some form of 15khz analogue output.

It would be great to see one of these hardware discussions for the n64, ps1, and saturn. It would be interesting to see each consoles strengths and weaknesses with sound, video, graphics, etc. and if or how developers overcame them. I recently got an n64 and was surprised by how blurry the picture comes out compared to the playstation when outputting on the same crt television with s-video.

Lot of dry PC coverage on Digital Foundry and I find some of their console stuff is pretty sarcastic and condescending. But I love John. Owning a PC and gaming on it is fine. I have a half decent PC myself... plus a multitude of consoles (I don't feel like its a betrayal of the master race). But I feel like John gets the joy of console gaming and the thrill of getting a new system or game, as well as the nostalgia of dusting off an old one. He is always surrounded by consoles and games from all platforms and eras, I appreciate the enthusiasm and passion for all types of gaming he exudes in his videos. Great work John. Keep 'em coming.

Love the nes it brings me back to my childhood. Bing a kid saving all the money I earned shoveling snow and mowing lawns for my neighbors. Having my parents drive me to the mall to buy a new game, sometimes I didn't even know what game I wanted I would buy the game with the coolest box art. Most of the games I picked up were hit or miss but I loved that I had a new game. Today's games are great and their graphic capabilities are amazing but there is not a single person on the planet who will be playing gta5 in 20 years. I feel today's games are too easily accessible which makes them all disposable. My kids will never feel that excitement for a new game and I understand that's progress but it's also a little sad.

Though I think this is a good video to introduce people to this kind of hardware stuff, there are already people doing these with excellent quality and with more comparisons to similar options. My Life In Gaming comes to mind as an excellent source for this. I like the digging into old games and how they work/comparing different versions more; that's more unique content.

Great video as usual! I know the purists may shun me for saying this but, why not buy a Nvidia Shield TV as it is very capable of software emulation at/up to 4k natively for the n64 and below. The price, and support for multiple consoles under decently accurate software emulation shouldn't be overlooked as a viable multiple machine emulator.

$450? If the price becomes reasonable, then I want one. As things happen, I'd buy a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X first. It's crazy that a NES is competing for $€£ with the latest consoles in 2018. Great stuff.
