The game that introduced us to Mode 7 on its launch for Super Famicom and SNES, F-Zero enjoyed a long and distinguished history across three generations of Nintendo home consoles - plus some excellent Game Boy Advance support. But with F-Zero GX, it was also a series that bowed out at its absolute peak. John Linneman and Audi Sorlie assess the history of the series and the technology that delivered some outstanding futuristic racing.

It was a hot summer holiday in Australia in the early 90's. My sister, cousins, step brother's and I were obsessively playing F-Zero for 2 day's straight. I specifically remember us all drinking lime cordial and trying to beat each other's times. When it was time for family to leave and travel back home, my uncle thought he'd give it a go. Never played the game before in his life. He asked us which track time was the hardest to beat and said he'd show us how it was done. To our amazement he beat the fastest time by 2 seconds 😆 RIP Uncle Mike 🥰

@skitzocalypso _ I was just thinking simply like a 99 player race, but let's think about the BR concept along with the closing circle. What if for the first lap, everywhere around the track is safe. Then after the first lap if you're more than a half of a lap behind the lead car you start taking damage. This progressively gets shorter and shorter and shorter until everyone except the lead car is taking damage. Last car alive wins. Considering F-Zero already has a mechanic where there are areas of the track where your car takes damage, this fits rather nicely with existing mechanics of the game. It's also interesting to think about the boost mechanic and how it uses your health along with the recharge areas which a player will need to slow down to recover more health. It can setup situations where being the lead car may not be the best position if you're not at full health. You'll want a reserve of health for when the zone is reduced to just the remaining few lead cars.

I was wondering about this as well. I remember struggling with GP Legend as a kid, because I'd resort to using the side attacks to take sharper corners, something that generally works okay, but will cause you to slide out when using lower grip, heavier vehicles(Crazy Bear and Green Panther were basically impossible for me to handle). It wasn't until I played the challenge mode and watched some of the demos that I found out you're supposed to tap the acceleration to take sharper turns, as well as regain your grip after you start sliding. Completely changed the feel of the game. It also seems that every machine seems to have its own optimal rhythm so it's not the same across the board.

Though in some ways I think F-zero X is just as if not more impressive considering just how rare full 3D games at 60fps were. The only other 60fps N64 game I'm aware of is Yoshi's story and that game is far easier to run at 60 since it's 2,5D and extremely slow paced. If anything with that game it feels it's only 60fps cause they just felt they could. F-zero X they really had to work hard for it.

Nice coverage of the series! Small correction on AX mode in GX: it's not true that AX is in fact contained within the GX iso, though that seems to be a popular myth on the internet. A lot of AX assets are present, but the hack that forces AX mode is fairly cosmetic, you still play with GX controls and physics whereas real AX plays quite differently. You can in fact run AX on a gamecube (or wii) through something like Nintendont and it's quite educational to run both to see just how different the arcade game actually is. A bit disappointed that even DF got this wrong, but still great to see Fzero get some love :)
@famicom89
@famicom89 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah this myth is still going strong around the internet for some reason, the AX iso also contains most of GX and with cheats you can play GX's tracks with the AX physics/handling though you won't T-Drift for long in most of the tracks, several of them are really too narrow to drive with AX physics at full speed

AX blows compared to GX whether you play it at arcade or hacked iso.
@danieljimenez1989
@danieljimenez1989 2 жыл бұрын
The most important difference I have found between GX and AX, besides the different physics, is the control interface. In Ax, you have analog acceleration and brakes, with digital drift/leaning. In GX you have analog drift/leaning with digital acceleration and brakes. This is a rather significant difference, and I don't think the common method of running AX with nintendont allows you to remap, so even that ends up being significantly innacurate.

Nintendo is stupid to not make a new F-Zero with its Switch install base and technology. It would outsell any other F-Zero, just like Dread will outsell any Metroid before. Tapping A during cornering is essential to the gameplay, making it a more enjoyable game than the clunkier Snes original imo. Faster and variable boosting between different machines and much variation between them with a lot of unlockables, awesome tracks, once you learn how to play Max Velocity, it is definitely better than the og shame no one knows about blast turns. Having played something like 1000 hours of GX, across both real hardware and emulators, I want to emphasize just how necessary a real Gamecube controller is for fully enjoying the game. The handling in GX is entirely built around the extreme sensitivity and precision of the Gamecube controller's analog stick, using anything else will result in a greatly reduced level of control of your ship, with you veering wildly off course when attempting to make small adjustments to your bearing at high speeds. The game is "playable" with something like a PS4 controller, but don't expect to clear the harder story missions on high difficulty settings. Even some grand prix tracks such as Cosmo Terminal: Trident or Sand Ocean: Lateral Shift become extremely frustrating without the total control offered by a real GC controller.
@BillyAltDel
@BillyAltDel 2 жыл бұрын
Not just that. Accelerate is "A", boost is "Y". On the gamecube controller this is *super* easy to do, but frustrating on any other controller. Never realized how well thought-out the Gamecube controller was until I tried emulating F-Zero GX.
@KoeiNL
@KoeiNL 2 жыл бұрын
@@BillyAltDel Oh man now you remind me of how good the button layout is on the NGC controller. I've been playing Hades lately and you can dash and use your special by pressing A followed by Y at the same time. On an Xbox controller that is pretty much impossible without also hitting B or X.

I've just been playing GX for the first time on my Wii, using a Game Cube Controller, and immediately noticed the integral use of the analog triggers for the airbrakes. I would imagine anything without analog shoulder buttons would make it really difficult to play.
@danieljimenez1989
@danieljimenez1989 2 жыл бұрын
Even with analog triggers it may not be a perfect match. For example, in DualShock 4 controllers, a full press signal is sent way before you reach the end of the physical travel. This means that you could let go a bit from the shoulder button pressure and still be at full tilt from the point of view of the game. The GameCube controller is really good.

F-Zero GX really does look fantastic, even today, especially in motion. But for whatever reason, I prefer playing F-Zero X. If I understand it correctly Mode 7 alone doesn't create the effect of a 3D plane. As mentioned in the video Mode 7 allows affine transformations on a purely 2D tile map (rotation, scaling, offset, skew, etc.). What creates the sense of perspective is changing the scale of the tile map as it goes from the top to the bottom of the screen, making it appear to be getting closer. This is done using the Horizontal-blank interrupt to step in and modify the scale between drawing each line.
@PhoenixClank

Yes, exactly, and ever since I found that out it's bugging me immensely when people get it wrong. Absolutely amazing video for an amazing series! I should note a minor error though. You unlock the AX Cup in GX by finishing all other GP cups on master difficulty. Not through the story mode. The story mode unlocks the AX characters/machines when played on the hardest difficulty. Thankfully, while still difficult, it isn't nearly as hard to unlock the AX Cup, since finishing GP mode on master isn't as tough as finishing story mode on the hardest setting.

Truly amazing. It was mind blowing at the time to see nintendo trust their old rival sega with one of their fanchises. Those graphics still look great today.
@MrMarinus18
@MrMarinus18 Жыл бұрын
We like to see them as enemies but I'm not sure how much actual animosity there was between the heads of the companies. The whole "Sega does what Nintendon't" thing was from America and Sega of Japan considered it quite distasteful. However Sega of Japan and Sega of America acted with a large amount of autonomy from each other. That kind of caused issues when they had conflicting ideas about the future and released two products in the Saturn and 32X meaning neither got the time, resources or marketing it needed. That whole idea of hostility between competitors is a very American thing and wasn't as strong in Japan, rivals are considered a good thing and maintaining respect is considered important. You can even tell this cultural influence from the countless rival characters in anime. Very few of them outright hate each other.
