The veteran Labour MP Diane Abbott has had the party whip suspended over a letter she wrote in a Sunday newspaper in which she suggested Jewish people were not subject to the same racism as Black people. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The comments have been described as deeply offensive by Jewish MPs, and risk reigniting the party's bitter row over anti-semitism.

Good job the Jews were in there then, because i take real exception to it. I'm Irish and many Irish people were transported to Jamaica and enslaved. Having spent twelve years of my life living just off Stoke Newington Church Street, I have witnessed many forms of racism and discrimination , White on Black,Black on White ,Black on Black, White on White the list goes on men on women women on men religion on religion I have also seen wonderful acts of kindness and of dreadful cruelty, and as the curtains slowly draw in on the End of my life I can say without prejudice It Is The Human Condition, I don't say we should not address it, but if we are to do so perhaps we ALL should be a little more forgiving of our minor foibles, After all there is not one community in Stoke Newington not guilty of their own prejudices, but by focusing on the bad and ignoring the good we paint a very distressing picture, one that in the end will lead to injustice and division. I consider myself fortunate to have met truly wonderful people from all walks of life and prefer for the most part to do my best to forgive the rest.

It's not. And people wonder why there are so many anti-semitic conspiracy theories. With things like this happening, it shouldn't be a surprise. I dislike Diane Abbot, but this is completely unfair. Let's remember that one of the reasons Corbyn had to go was that he was openly pro-Palestine - watch Al Jazeera's 'The Labour Files' if you haven't already. A bunch of the anti-semitism reports in the Labour party were simply opposition to the present genocide being perpetrated by Israel. The HRA definition of anti-semitism (which I believe has now been adopted) ordains that it's _inherently anti-semitic_ to acknowledge what's going on in Israel as a genocide. Israel is, as a simple matter of fact, powerful, and is using that power to protect its own political interests. This may be an element common to many outlandish conspiracy theories, but that doesn't mean it isn't true.

Do you ever think that things like this are blown out of all proportion to take us away from the real issue? Discrimination and prejudice towards any individual or group, who is/are different from us, is unacceptable. What she said may be 'factually true' - and we 'split hairs' about how awkwardly she expressed her views. The real issue is that we react so strongly to certain discrimination and allow other discrimination to go right by us. This is the real issue as I see it. All prejudice and discrimination about a 'group' is unacceptable. Should that be the conversation? Perhaps I am totally wrong about this.

She's peddling the Critical Race Theory understanding racism which is certainly nonsense. The claim is more or less a Theory of History revolving around the alleged dialectic of whiteness and blackness. White people supposedly created an ideology of 'white supremacy' towards the end of Age of Discovery. This ideology animated and propelled the Atlantic slave trade, colonialism and imperialism - as coherent anti-black projects - creating the modern world which is thus immanently structured against black people in favour of white people. This can be seen in intractable inequalities in the present, which can only be remedied by a dictatorship of the anti-racists acting as total administrators of the political-economy. This Theory falls over if racism against black people is just another form of prejudice. Prejudice against black people has to have world-historical import (specialness) to preserve the dialectic. Now can you see why some people so jealously secure the category of racism?

@3chords490

It seems to me that the extract from her letter contained some stated “ facts” about history. I’m not qualified to know for sure if these “facts” from history are actually true or not true or exaggerated. What Im confused about is the concept of suspending someone for stating facts. Such facts will either be true or not true and might well be inconvenient. In such cases why is there not an immediate debate about whether what is stated is the truth or a lie , because if it’s the truth that’s being stated then we have to work with that surely ? I can see what both sides are saying. Abbott does need challenging on the idea of a hierarchy of hate , but also she is probably stating some uncomfortable facts from history. It’s a fascinating debate to be had here. Why do we need to suspend people for opening out a debate ? I want to see discussions not censorship.

What she said was mostly fact yes, but ignorant of all the facts. She said white people (including jews and Irish) weren’t persecuted in slavery, apartheid etc. True but oddly convenient not to mention examples such as the holocaust or Irish persecution, which equally black people were not a part of. Just ignorant and disrespectful to those groups. Its also odd and unhealthy to make it a competition.

Diane’s letter ends with three sentences of facts. The fisrt two are correct and important. The third is VASTLY wrong, namely: And at the height of slavery, there were no white-seeming people manacled on the slave ships. In reality, at the height of slaverey there were huge numbers of white Europeans being enslaved by Barbary pirates, which is the reason why there are such pale-skined people in Morroco today. And the very word “slave” derives from Slav, because of the centuries of huge enslavement of Slav people by Islamic Jihadists (hence they fled to the grim areas that are now Russia). That Starmer’s party cannot tolerate reasonable discussion of the nature and facts of racism speaks more ill of Starmer than of Abbot.

If she'd just been talking about the modern day then even if I personal disagree with her version of the ideology, I could at least recognise where she's coming from. But what she actually said, not just the soundbites her supporters are quoting and when she said it makes what she said horrific. 81 years prior to when her comments were made, the first Gas Chamber at Auschwitz II was opened. Depending on the specifics of when she sent her supposed "first draft" that she apologised for, it may well have been to the day. If she's not an anti-Semite, she went to a lot of effort to show herself as one.

Speaking as someone who desperately wants the Tories out of power, the timing is really annoying, given the Dominic Raab stuff, but overall this could be good news for Labour. Parties can get elected when the fringe loons in the party are relatively unknown or not talked about, but Abbott is no longer that - she has been an open goal for the Tories over the last few elections more than anyone else in the Labour ranks. If this has more permanent consequences than just a suspension, then it will remove that open goal.

She is correct that in the past different ethnic groups that are white do suffer racism but to a lesser degree, Its fact. Part of my family is Irish with ginger hair but they don't get abused in the streets like I have seen Asian or African people. The things she wrote about the segregated bus and voting in South Africa are also true. This is a fact. I can also see the otherside, these things are now in the past, laws have been passed and we have taken massive leaps forward as a nation. With the current toxic American politics swathing over the world making minorities feel like victims and majorities feel like monsters she is only stirring up a pot of divisive hatred when someone in her position should be striving for unity between our races. However I don’t agree with cancel culture and I believe she is within her rights to spark debate, and you can’t have debate if you strike people off like this. She should never have been suspended.

I think the point that she’s making is that black communities in the west have experienced a much longer, more systemic and institutionalised form of racism, which isn’t an unfair point. If that is what she’s saying, she definitely needed to explain it better but it’s certainly not enough to justify her being expelled from the party, such an act is a betrayal of parliamentary privilege
@Afterthoughtbtw
@Afterthoughtbtw Жыл бұрын
Maybe you think it's not an unfair point, but it _is_ a truly absurd and ignorant one. Jews have been persecuted by Christians as Christ-killers for centuries before black communities were even a thing in the west. And then something happened in the 19th century that slips my mind at the moment, but even without that, the persecution they have endured makes the persecution that black communities in the West have endured pale into insignificance. Go look up the things the Catholic Church promulgated about Jews, and the things they did just as an example. Something makes me suspect that rather than the 'West' you actually mean the American mid-South.

@@Irishtradchannel I’m not commenting on the history, I’m commenting on the fallibility of Abbott’s argument from a debating standpoint. In the context of the original article, the focus was on racism in the uk today, and therefore any consideration of the history of racism is either background or an example of something not to be repeated. In that sense, the inclusion of every instance of racism to ever happen in history is not necessarily important to the overall argument because it’s accepted that all of those instance share a moral evil; something Abbott doesn’t dispute. What Abbott was trying to do was highlight a nuance between systemic racism and prejudice, which she didn’t do very well, but its still a valid point, and definitely needs to be considered in the context of the wider debate and not as an isolated piece. I also don’t think what she said was inherently antisemitic. As I said before, the point of her letter was to highlight a nuance and give a historical example, it wasn’t an attempt to actively diminish the historical struggles of Jewish people. There is no reason to believe that she personally would mistreat or abuse Jewish people, nor any of the other minorities she listed. And while it may be rational to argue that some others may still take offence to it, even if it was unintentional, that still isn’t the point I’m making. The overall point is she shouldn’t have been expelled from the Labour Party. Offending people is not nearly a strong enough reason to ignore parliamentary privilege and it’s of much greater importance that we protect the freedom of speech of our MPs without the risk of punishing them for having done so

I find your post to be woefully inaccurate. Slavery has existed throughout history and it is not just to Africans during the ‘slave trade’. Indeed according to the UN there are parts of the world that still practice slavery now. As for her been expelled from the Labour Party, it is my understanding that she has had the whip removed and suspended, part of the the Labour Party rules and regulations. If she is actually expelled then she should face a by-election.

I am sure that all the minority groups in any country (I experienced it as a white woman on her on in India and also at the hands of my neighbours who called me a “white wh**e” because I wouldn’t sleep with them) have felt that they at somepoint have been racially abused.
