Find out the real reasons we left Puerto Rico despite the Act 20/22 benefits. The hubby and I share 21 + 1 bonus thing about living on the island that finally sparked our decision to leave. This is our personal experience, and yours may be entirely different.
We talk about weather, bugs, shopping, shipping, traffic, parking, gas, and waiting around for practically everything. We discuss crime, corruption, issues with the language, making friends, gringo pricing, trash and abandoned buildings on the island, power and internet outages, crowds, noise, and the impact of Hurricane Maria.
To help clean up and preserve Puerto Rico's precious natural resources, please donate to Para la Naturaleza, an incredible organization on the island working to conserve 33% of the land in its natural state by 2033:

This video is someones personal reasons for leaving. Accusing them of racism or ignorance is a reflection of you! They tried, it didn't work, they moved. And they're sharing THEIR viewpoint. Most of these social media trolls spewing negative comments wouldn't dare say these things in person to their face.
@dianajusinogonzalez6553

Many of their opinions, I don't think they would dare say to a Puerto Rican to their face...I'm actually baffled they dared to say it on a video and published it. "Malls are TOO cold" Really? After you complained about how hot the weather was?! Check your privilege. Edited to add: It hurts many of your remarks but after letting go of the hurt your words caused, I must say in all calmness and peace; IN THE END, many of your reasons for leaving are everyday torments for the natives. As a non-native you got to experience many of the hardships that the people of the island deal with. Hardships that are mostly the direct result of the colonial condition the U.S. government has us in. Instead of complaining how unideal paradise was, why don't you join the cause and protest the U.S. government and its treatment of Puerto Rico? Share your voice but instead of placing blame on the island, place the blame where it belongs: The U.S. government who continues to abuse our island by keeping it a colony. Do better. Instead of a "why we left Puerto Rico" video, do a "why U.S. is failing Puerto Rico" video. Be our voice. Share our struggles, unite on our fight. That's what sets the Puerto Rican people apart. We unite in our fight, we endure our struggles and we do not give up. Our own hymn "Preciosa" by Marc Anthony says about our island "The bards that sing your history call you Precious, It doesn't matter that the tyrant treats you with black hatred". We know the beauty of our island even if we have been treated by the "tyrants" (Our colonizers) with BLACK HATRED. lyricstranslate.com/nl/preciosa-precious.html Please use your voice to do good and to spread awareness not just to shame our island, our culture, our people and their struggles. And how my parents would say "Dios los bendiga!" (God bless you).

Hi! I agreed with you. This is someone's personal reason for leaving.... BUT when you talk down, when you disrespect another place, when you insult other people home because doesn't work for you. That talk more about them. Constructive criticism is always welcome, call other people dump.... Im sorry, not sorry at all. They came looking for a tax exception paradise, the reason doesn't work for them is because they just saw money and never did the research when you move to another place. Im can't excuse other people comments, but Im seeing disrespect receive disrespect. I combat this with knowledge, but not everyone is like me and thanks of God not everyone is like the guy in this video. Actually she looks ashamed

I believe the lack of investigation before moving is what creates 80% of your complaints. You cant complain about heat when you are living on a Caribbean island. Mosquitos, you never been to Florida? Heat and humidity, you never been to New Orleans? If you are working from home and have to have the a/c on 24/7, what do you do during the summers in Nashville, just pop a window for a few months? I cant say I ever spent 20 mins pouring gas lol . In NJ they pour your gas for you and theres still a huge debate between people that like it and people that dont. You do have a few points. For example, the wait on services, cost of living and power outages. The fact that you choose the word “dump” to describe the island, kind of makes me angry but in part I do hope my people see this and react to it. We do have this problem with our beaches and it is sad. I respect your argument but maybe next time, some well spent time in learning about a place before you financially invest in it, would help you make a better decision. On this Island we learn and adapt . Like we say here, no aguantaron el empuje!

I'm a gringo who has spent much of the last 5 years in PR, though not as Act 20/22. I don't disagree that people are moving there to dodge taxes, but the PR government is enabling this by offering Act 20/22 in the first place. The tax structure there is crazy with the poor and working classes being charged high taxes, both on income and sales, and the rich encouraged to set up tax shelters. Among other things, it's led to a hollowing out of the professional classes with an obvious example being the departure of 15% of the island's doctors over the past several years. I am not an economic expert, but there must be a better way to encourage investment in the economy -- and migration to the island -- than to give free money to rich people.

Did you really expect everything to be handed in a silver platter in an island that has systematically and constantly been ignored and taken advantage of by your so loved mainland? News flash, that’s just they way it is in most Latin American countries, and im confident saying us puertoricans have the better side of things. Some of these reasons are why a lot of us move to the states in search of better opportunities and yet a lot of you guys question why we do it and tell us to “go back to where we came from”, yet, it’s okay for you to flee ASAP once you “find the shopping malls too cold”. For people who say you can’t do any work without the internet you sure as hell don’t seem to be able to look up any information about a place before you decide to completely change your lifestyle. Apart from all the political aspects, Puerto Rico is an amazing place to live in, filled with incredibly talented and genuine people. Most of the things you claim bothered you, say more about the types of people you are, than the people on the island. You gotta check yourself.

You chose one issue out of 21 (Cold air conditioning in the shopping malls) to create a “strawman“ (logical fallacy) argument, and then proceeded to attempt to destroy it. It’s like you didn’t even listen to the video!🤔🤔😳 They made a point of saying Puerto Rico had natural beauty, but unfortunately, much of it was marred by decaying infrastructure, abandoned buildings, trash on the beach, etc. Next time, try LISTENING to what is said and don’t let your emotional prejudice against any criticism blind you to the reality of The need for change on Puerto Rico! 🤔😳🤨

I think you are way off. From watching their other videos, they were pretty familiar with how things were there. But, only when you live somewhere do you really get to know it. @@adiaz9201 bruh. You should read a little. When USA invaded us, We had everything, we made our things and we weren’t depending from Spain since they give us the liberty to do overseas business (libre comercio) We even had our own representation at court in Spain and pretty much to have our own stuff such like our own electricity system little by little in some part of the island, education system/ teaching French and Italian in schools, El Colegio de Abogados, scientists/labs, a large train system, National Radio and national sports, El Yunque was already a national forest/natural reserve and many more things. When USA dowgraded our coin it caused such a severe economic blow, causing the island's millionaires to emigrate to the United States and the working class to become poor. Literally USA turned PR into a poor island when we were one of the most places advanced in the Caribbean. Later on with the arrival of the Commonwealth (ELA), many believed that USA saved them from hunger when in reality the ones who screwed us very hard were them in the first place. ELA is another lie created by the government of PR and the USA to think that the great nation saved us when they really just fucked everything we had… we don’t own shit to USA, they own us EVERYTHING they took from us.

This video took me a couple of minutes to digest. I think you mentioned a couple of valid points for leaving like power outages, difficulty making friends, and overall contrast in culture expressed through waiting periods, gas pumps, and noise. But the majority of these are an indication of how blind you are to your own privilege and maybe a little racist? You receive these monumental tax benefits (15-25% less than average) that you can leverage to buy real estate property, charge rent, and in no way have it trickle down. But you complain that there are fees for these tax incentives? That you have to hear loud noises because people are def? That you have to deal with crowds and traffic?! That not everybody knew english?!?! What gets me the most is that you put up 21 reasons to complain about the island and explained why you left, but still decided to keep the house in Dorado and charge rent. Those houses in Villas de Golf were +/-$500k a year ago but because people that take advantage of the tax incentives have come to the island, they're now in the +/-$1-1.5M range. Someone that lives on the island doesn't get the tax incentives and now can't afford to pay a $1M house. But I'm glad that you were able to contribute to the gentrification. And don't get me wrong. I'd love for all my friends from the mainland to buy a house in Puerto Rico and live next to me and truly get to know and enjoy my culture. But it's the combination of your privilege and the benefits you received plus the complaining that gets me frustrated. But hey, at least you volunteered to clean up the beaches!

There are under five thousand Act 20/21 recipients in Puerto Rico, in a country of 3 million people. To suggest that they're having a significant effect on housing prices (except in a few expat enclaves) is absurd. And no matter where you go, almost every fourth building is an empty hulk. There is plenty of land and potential housing, but nobody wants to buy / invest to renovate or rebuild. Why is that? It's also not the Act 20/22 recipient's fault that the Puerto Rican government's taxes are so high. Puerto Ricans have typically voted in a bunch of leftist politicians who buy votes with the promise of generous government welfare and social programs. Who did you think was going to pay for those programs?

I'm a gringo living in Puerto Rico for much of the last 5 years. This video makes me uncomfortable as being like sort of rudely criticizing somebody else's house and hospitality, but it's not a great analogy. The heat and humidity (and the weird overcorrection with a/c in places like movie theaters) are real. I recognize many of the other complaints they had while also recognizing that it's often a result of underinvestment as a function of both external neglect and internal corruption (aggravated by things like the Jones act and the dediversification of agriculture as a result of rum production). I don't know how to solve those things, but if they were solved, I don't think potholes would be an issue. I also think all of the complaints in the video would have seemed like minor nuisances if the people in the video had found community. For this, they likely have only themselves to blame. I have no doubt they fit in well and have no problem making friends in upscale neighborhoods in the states where everyone has a similar socio-economic-linguistic background. But in a gated community of transient tax-dodging gringos, you're going to feel isolated and cut off because, in fact, you are. They mention this in the video, but I think this is probably the one problem that magnifies all the others. It's certainly not impossible to move to Puerto Rico from the states and find friends and community. I know people who have done it, but I don't think it's possible to do while staying cocooned within the luxuries to which they seem to feel entitled and apart from the people whose home the island already is. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. It is really hot, though.

We also recognize the Problems we have with the energy outages, cars and prices, shipping and Amazon, corruption, cost of living, potholes, etc. Maybe you should analyze what it means to be a colony, a classical status of economic and political exploitation that people have to endure. In Puerto Rico the overall cost of living is about 13% higher than the mainland United States. The Jones Act of 1920 requires that everything that comes to Puerto Rico must first be shipped to the States and then reshipped to the island by US transport, thereby increasing cost. Blame the politicians who are in the pocket of shipping cargo corporations.

I also know various gringos who visit the island every year and have the time of their lives in PR. While some of these are facts, you will find most of them in many other states. My advice, if you want to move to Puerto Rico or any other place, don't pick up your entire life and move to a place you have visited once or twice; rent first, put all your stuff in a storage for a year or two; if possible, lease a condo in the area you which to buy. You will make friends in a Condominium setting, or at least have local neighbors that can give you recommendations like places to visit, options on grocery stores, etc. If it doesn't work move back, Research before you buy, its just common sense, that way you wont be trashing the place in social media just because it didn't work for you!!

Unfortunately it's both! Corruption and colonialist tax policies aren't mutually exclusive. As we see around the world and throughout history, they tend to go hand in hand. The kind of people who gravitate towards positions of power in tend to be shady or overly confident in their abilities to lead, and this is even more often the case in a colonial system when true democracy isn't really an option. People with integrity and competence find it next to impossible to gain support and use their power to enact meaningful change through public office without either getting eaten alive or becoming corrupted. And the tax system is working exactly as intended, unfortunately. It benefits the privileged and makes it easier for them to move in, while the locals more often find themselves having to choose between pursing opportunities elsewhere or struggling to survive locally. It also means locals don't have as much power to protect their natural resources, find affordable housing, access quality education, eat healthy food, or advocate for fairer trade and tax laws. Crumbling infrastructure, growing inequality, shitty tax systems, corporate cronyism and corruption are all very common symptoms of failed or failing democracies. The US should take note because what's happening in PR is a sign of things to come for them in the future if they aren't careful.
@pbobenson
@pbobenson 2 жыл бұрын
Corruption is definitely a factor, but it’s not the principal factor for there not being enough money for infrastructure improvements. The cognitive dissonance of these folks benefiting from a huge tax break and then complaining about non existing public services is the hight of irony.
@Updog89
@Updog89 2 жыл бұрын
@@pbobenson True! Corruption is more a factor involved in the mismanagement of the limited infrastructure funds PR does get, rather than in how much money there is in the first place. Some of the stuff you guys pointed out in the video are real problems: outages, corruption, crime, contamination, price gouging at supermarkets. Some stuff you pointed out is dumb: it being HOT and HUMID (you moved to the tropics - what did you expect?!), the bugs, having to hold the gas pump, Spanish being the main language (guys, you moved to a LATIN AMERICAN country). With a bit of research and maybe by having a "test trial" of living in the island you could have located these "issues" before moving to PR (that was all your choice). Still though, that doesn't change that you approached these criticisms without the socio-cultural context of colonialism in Puerto Rico. It was insensitive. Most Puerto Ricans could agree with some of the real problems you mentioned, but you don't acknowledge that a lot of these issues are a symptom of how the USA has taken advantage of the island and treated it as a possession rather than a part of its country. We (Puerto Ricans) will always be second class citizens. You are speaking from a position of privilege and you fail to address and consider that in your video. Maybe you could use your platform (and the negative attention you have here) for something good like showcasing the inequalities Puerto Ricans deal with on the daily due to colonialism. This instead of out-of touch and out-of-context criticism. You could advocate for the USA to step up in terms of Puerto Rico, and educate yourself on the root of all of our islands issues. I really hope that this comment (and many other comments with valid criticism I've seen in this video) are considered by you and your husband before posting anything in the future. You know, get some positive outcome from this negative situation.

Most of these couples like the ones here go for specific self-centered reasons. It is never enough to go and move to a new place and expect a narrow window of reasons to pull you through a very complex set of circumstances. I am Puerto Rican my family goes back a very long way. But I live in Merida (Yucatan Mexico) now. My last name is Rivera and my first name is Vida. Mandy is an email from someone else. I weighed extremely well the pros and cons of actually becoming a permanent resident of Mexico or a Mexican citizen. Mexican bureaucracy is not easy. It is super hot here and humid. You got to pay taxes if you buy near the coast in Mexico as a US citizen. I got a son that is 10 years old. I adopted a kid from Colorado. African American boy. He is now 24 years old and speaks Puerto Rican Spanish even though he grew up in Colorado. The excuses people come up with because they are worried about taxes or bullshit. Worry about leading a life of principles and love. You got to pick what you want to or are willing to live with and not think society is about your own needs. Puerto Rico needs to be an independent nation and the USA's bullshit neo-colonial treatments need to end. If you keep relying on some unjust colonist to decide what is best for the island you wind up like Hawaii or Alaska. The Natives lose rights to the land and wind up genocided out or poverty-stricken and having to leave their beloved lands to a bunch of power-hungry, rich callous strangers who never bother to learn a foreign language thinking the world revolves around Gringo rules. Guess what? They don't. It is up to the Puerto Ricans to stop thinking American selfish people who are not Puerto Ricans at all and never studied Puerto Rican history have the responsibility to fight for freedom for the island from vulture funds and greedy banks and sellout politicians beholden to the DC crowd who lives with corrupt idiot values that don't even fight for their own state's constituents rights. I mean it took the Afro Americans a lot of work and a lot of blown-off heads to get some basic rights in 1964. The Ricans they don't even think are real 'Americans'. Wake up from the lying pieces of crap in DC. And do something about gaining some rights to make tough decisions for a country that can actually lead itself out of problems. The outsiders don't care. They never will.

I wish you both well on your way. I hope you learned from your experience in Puerto Rico. Often what we think is outside of ourselves (a place, a situation, a person that bothers us), is only our own feelings and attitudes reflected outward. To me, what this also demonstrates is that these programs of the Puerto Rican government to lure people from abroad with tax incentives is backfiring. People who come here looking to benefit from tax breaks (or other schemes) and hoping for a tropical paradise vacation experience as the cherry on top will be disappointed sooner or later when real life becomes more than just a vacation. On the other hand, anyone who comes here truly looking to build a home, a family and connection with the community and land will find one of the most beautiful and enchanting places to live. It's not always easy and no, it's not perfect, but if your mind is open enough to see heaven, it is most certainly here.

The key is having a genuine interest in their lives and culture. I left Puerto Rico because getting a doctor's appointment is a struggle, getting something fixed it's a struggle, paying a bill or getting things done in government offices is a struggle, it's a bureaucracy struggle for everything and anything that has to do with getting at least a few things done in possibly one day. It's basically impossible and this can be frustrating process for people who need specialists due to health conditions. To find a career and get hired based on credentials is nearly impossible. I would say the island is fantastic to visit and have fun but besides that I wouldn't live in PR. I was raised in PR and lived for many years on and off. I had to move to the states to survive. I don't care about little things like humidity, mosquitos or noise because honestly, Florida has more dangerous stuff and people than the island itself. I honestly feel safer walking in Puerto Rico by myself than the state of Florida. The only reason I live in the state it's because the bureaucratic process is faster and the public schools have many different options and better education and because of more open job opportunities and great healthcare. Florida has more sexual predators, alligators, sharks, scammers, racism, school shootings, amoeba, and so on....things that Puerto Ricans don't even have to worry about. Hurricanes happen in both PR and FL so I can't complain about this. In the end we can't have both worlds.

This ridiculous video was suggested when I was planning a recent trip to PR. I definitely knew what I was in for. I have spent significant time in Central America and this type of ex-pat gringo is everywhere but I decided to watch for my entertainment. My boyfriend and I were howling with laughter even before going to the island, and this video became a running joke during our (fantastic!) week in Puerto Rico. Some guy would roll by bumping some Reggaeton and I'd say "It's just so LOUD here!" lol We had a really gorgeous spider in our hotel room "there's so many BUGS here!" lol and on and on Some of these are these people really embarrassing themselves by showing they never even left the fancy suburbs they lived in in the mainland because that parking garage is exactly like most garages in most major cities on the mainland. And I thought the grocery stores on the island were fine although I felt bad for y'all the prices are so high. (And this guy admitting he doesn't know how to relax and chill then blaming it on everyone else for being "slow". It's a slower culture overall. That's what most people like about it Mr. Silicon Valley.) I had the good sense to have humility that my Spanish is terrible so I had a hard time communicating but I guess even though this guy MOVED THERE he didn't have that attitude. Some of this is much less funny though. Given that these people moved there to have some super tax break that locals don't get, it's then especially disgusting to complain about infrastructure. And the part where they start complaining about fees that I am 100% sure they can AFFORD to pay? That is where I stopped laughing. You aren't giving this island your tax base money and you're complaining about giving them a little extra when you can see their infrastructure problems? What is wrong with you? No I'm actually serious. I came back really interested in seeing Puerto Rico treated better but I'm not sure what will help y'all. If any Puerto Ricans feel like commenting I would love to hear your thoughts. Obviously overturning the Jones Act so things will get less expensive will help. But more broadly, I say if you want to be a state, welcome to being the 51st state! If you're tired of our mistreating colonial asses (and I wouldn't blame you!) and you want to go independent I say "welcome to independence nation of Puerto Rico!". Or if you want to stay the way things are just get much more infrastructure aid like a US state does? I don't know! But it seems like being a territory is screwing y'all so badly. And I see it and I do care and I don't think it's acceptable. This is why this video really infuriated me instead of laughing at the end. Instead of ending like I did, that dude had the nerve to end with "I gained an appreciation for multiculturalism". OMFG

thank you for leaving our island, really thank you! Puerto Rico is still the same without you wait no, it's better! People who come to take away our "few resources" because it is cheaper for them do not deserve to live here. As long as people who want to benefit from act 20-22 continue to arrive without providing any kind of benefit to our island, I prefer that they leave. Also 2014, right? only 3 years before the hurricane. As far as I remember before the hurricane there were no lines to wait at gas stations. As far as I can remember the food costs weren't that high. that I remember the corruption and criminality is not very different from the USA but at least our children have safe schools. I remember that the tax they had to pay in 2014 was 7% and for 2015-2018 it was 11.5%, this is the same for all Puerto Ricans but you had an advantage that we did not, YOU DID NOT PAY CONTRIBUTIONS = you had the money to pay. For me to remember the language is an unchangeable thing. I mean, using it as a reason for having moved is an unfounded reason because from day 0 you knew that Spanish is spoken here and not Japanese. As far as I can remember they complained about stray dogs, but in their country there are no people who unfortunately sleep in booths next to a building that generates millions in a day? I want to be respectful and I respect their decision but it is unfair to come to benefit and when they can no longer bear the heat and humity they leave and say that it is the worst thing to live here. luckily the United States has places like Dorado! and for people who are not from here. they lived in a beverly hills but Puerto Rican. Y de un boricua en español para que entiendan “Puerto Rico es una nación, un país con sueños más grandes que su geografía.” And thank you for showing the world what it is like to buy and rent in Puerto Rico through your videos but there is a lot of misinformation in this one, you lived in Dorado which is equivalent to a mini used in Puerto Rico that's why you couldn't make friends, the gas stations are always full because it is a very busy route since it is a metropolitan area, a lot is expected because we are 3 million inhabitants who have different problems and there are very few ways to solve them. There is garbage, yes, but there are also many places outside of San Juan, Humacao, Naguabo, Rincon, Aguadilla, there are many places where there is no garbage. There are many stray dogs but there are also many shelters for them. if there are taxes, and they are very expensive but they are still by US comptrollers who come to supervise our economy but they themselves take our money to pay millionaire salaries. Puerto Rico is more than Dorado beach or San Juan, Puerto Rico is home to many Boricuas who are proud to leave here and really nowhere in the world will you find people as friendly and hospitable as Boricuas

The problem is not that you experienced these very real problems (except the cold mall-that one makes me laugh) but for the most part: VERY REAL PROBLEMS-yes! That’s not the issue, the issue is that you make a video talking about all these issues in a way that sounds like you are just complaining of this island that happens to be OUR HOME. But do you use your following to create awareness of the many issues caused by the fact that we are a COLONY OF THE U.S. and that the GOVERNMENT SHOULD DO BETTER BY US? No, you don’t. All the hate you are getting on these comments and the negative feedback is because you have no intention of helping the island, you just wanted to enjoy its riches and when those didn’t hit your high standards, you publicly complain and criticize our home. I know you hate hearing this but that’s the same behavior of a colonizer (it’s true), you want to take, take, take and give very little. Sure you paid your taxes, etc BUT you are a WHITE AMERICAN, your voice reaches many people in the U.S. that Puerto Rican may never reach. You want to contribute? Help spread awareness in a respectful way. It is not Puerto Rico’s or its people’s fault we are a COLONY and many of these problems are deeply rooted in our COLONY STATUS.

@@cdtstrong1 yes definitely needs more people. Last year 84,000 puertoricans moved out from the island because of lack of opportunities and other economic issues! Every year there is a huge exodus from Puerto Rico. When you have a country that encourages puertoricans to leave the island and encourages foreigners ( people with high income to be more specific) to come to the island that’s a problem! And act 22 is part of that problem, puertoricans tax pay is very high, wages are super low and we have this millionaires coming to live here who barely contribute according to new reports. This act has not proven to be beneficial in any way. Yes Puerto Rico needs more people, so we need to create the infrastructure so locals can stay. And yes when you come to the island, not for the love of the island but just to run away from paying taxes while the locals pay those taxes yes it is a way to take advantage of Puerto Rico! I can keep going, but my point is: there are a lot of cultural and geographic differences we accept them, or not. Out of the entire list the ones that really frustrate me are: dealing with government agencies and the exaggerated bureaucracy. The process in most agencies is archaic, making simple 15 minute transactions a one day affair. Another is the noise pollution. I like quiet surroundings. I don’t mind my neighbors listening to their choice in music, but I want to have the choice of listening to what I like in the comfort of my home without the excessive background sounds. Doctors appointment: I despise going to a medical facility without an appointment and having to wait hours before being seen. It is an inhumane practice to have seniors wait in line from early Dawn just because medical facilities treat people on a first come first serve basis. Again, it’s archaic and out of touch. The rest of the issues on their list are manageable to a certain extent-for example I can’t control power outages but can purchase solar panels. I can’t control dirty politicians-but those are everywhere 😉. Mosquitos and stray dogs don’t bother me. 🇵🇷 Good day all!

More whining? Can't you drop the subject? OK, you dislike Puerto Rico, but your complaints border on the ridiculous. Many are not factual, and many do not apply everywhere. I watched your "ohhs" and "ahaas" as you drove about with realtors promoting real estate. Were you getting commissions? Did you get cut out of the profit and decide to denigrate everything? There are problems in every place you live, just different. Basically, however, for all its faults, PR is one of the best places on earth to live and very much better in many ways than US states. Most uf what you say is overblown exaggerated hyperbole, not worth debating. You drive a wedge between Anglos from the States and Puerto Ricans--something that proves why so many of us here (Anglos and Puerto Ricans) want no part of statehood or closer relations with USA. The world knows the meaning of "The Ugly American" always complaining about how much better things are in USA. That is false, and conditions in USA are worsening. Find your tax-exempt eden in USA. Don't look for it elsewhere, especially in Puerto Rico.

When I go to C.R.I.M it's the natives complaining about the slow process. When i go to Meson or McDonalds, it's the natives on the lines complaining. When I go Autozone or Pepboys and wait 20 mins on a line with 3 people to pay, it's the natives complaining. When the food prices are high for crappy supermarket foods, It's the natives that are complaining. When I go to a doctor and I have to wait 4-6 hours even though I got there early, it's the natives complaining. When the lines are long and slow at TJMAX , it's the Natives complaining. When people drive like maniacs and blow through stop signs, Red Lights, it's the Natives complaining. When there is heavy traffic going to Baymon or San Juan, its the Native Complaining. When the house deteriorates fast and you have to paint your raw iron fence every damn year, it's the Natives complaining. When jobs pay low and you can't make enough, It's the natives complaining. When crime is out of control, It's the Natives Complaining. When the beaches are over crowded and loud as fook, It's the natives complaining. How do i know? I'm Puerto Rican and have huge family in PR as well. Except they are still there complaining. 😂 Lets me honest, here, when an outsider comes and criticizes it pissed you off. but most of us "Puerto Ricans" complain about the same damn things ourselves. It's just we love to start drama and point fingers when others complain about the same exact things we complain about. We are all human beings, Black, White, Yellow, Etc. We all have the right to complain in Puerto Rico. Some of you who talk crap on here don't even own a home and can't relate to what homeowners go through to get things done. Don't worry one day you will own a home and you will see what it is like. Good luck with the slow agencies of the Puerto Rican Governments and Do nothing staff, ohh and the best part is when you get pissed, they love it, they laugh and make you wait more. 😂

Why do more Puerto Ricans live in NY than in Puerto Rico ? I lived in the mountains on the East side of the island and never needed an air conditioner . I did have to close the windows to lite up a smoke or the breeze put out the match . I was tired of waking up every morning to another beautiful day .So I moved back to the states which has plenty of horrible winter days . My only disappointment with Puerto Rico is how much it changed from how it was in the 1960's The oceans use to be pure and clear with plenty of fish and how lately the fishermen I knew had to go miles out to get a good catch for the day . A lot of the fish had growths on them and looked mutated from chemical pollution that runs off the island . The chemical runoffs also damaged and killed much of the coral reefs needed for a healthy habitat for sealife . While some authorities falsely claim it's from global warming .There were oil tankers that also leaked oil and that contributed to the death of coral reefs . I spent summers there as a gringo tourist from age 4 to age 12 and have lots of good memories of Puerto Rico . My wife and children were born in Puerto Rico . When Puerto Rican men found out I was married to a Puerto Rican women they would ask me " You like Puerto Rican women " I'd say no , I like my wife . And don't go spreading rumors that I like Puerto Rican women because she's the jealous type . As a gringo born in the states I was the second best coconut tree climer in my community only because , my daughter at age 4 from watching her dad , became one of the best coconut tree climers I've ever seen . And I still have the photos to prove it . I wrote a song about the island ,included is the mention of the Coqui frog . One can't mention Puerto Rico in fairness if the Coqui is not in one of their sentences as you can't not notice the little coqui when night time falls or when hit with a afternoon rain shower . The coqui frog sings to you,... thousands of years of history His loyalty to you his only home , has always been a mystery Green trees and your gentle rains , mountains lush with glistening streams . Mystic winds on moon lit nights , I swear I was in Paradise . My Song is copy written and is much longer

I truly appreciate your opinion and comments, I would never call your opinion racist (just in case somebody did) but remember you moved to an Island, not to another state in the United States. Please go visit and live in South America and let me know how that goes for you. I believe some of your critiques were petty but I glad you tried it out. I wish you all the best. I'm retired from the Armed Services and looking forward to retiring in Puerto Rico or using it as a platform to move around.

Before you come to our island you have to change your mind and remember that is a total diferent culture...so do not expect to find all the accessibility and variety that you have in the states.....an other thing is that ...if you are a person that just live inside your house dont expect much to see all the real beauty of our island....all the love and joy of our people!!! You both came to our 🏝 with the expectations that everything has to fit on you and not you have to fit of the diferent and rich culture!!!

Honestly, you left because you weren't rich enough. Act 20-22(now 60) is not for upper-middle-class individuals, it is for rich people. You will spend more in some areas, but will save so much in taxes that the extra cost of living in paradise wouldn't matter. If you were rich enough, when everything balances out, you wouldn't mind that groceries are 10% more or internet access is $20.00 more. Everything else regarding nature, bugs, humidity, hot, etc... are simple facts that should be common knowledge to everyone who does a little bit of research.

Good points... The primary reason we came to PR in 2014 was to experience life outside the mainland US. Act 20/22 was really just a nice perk for coming. We didn’t intend to offend anyone with this video, we just wanted to share our perspective with others who might be thinking of moving to the island from the mainland. I think it’s so interesting that Puerto Ricans can talk amongst themselves about these issues, but we’re not allowed to? We did a ton of research when we visited in 2014, tried it out for a month, and didn’t think the weather would bother us. After 4 years, we just got tired of the heat and the biting bugs and the bureaucracy and the unreliable utilities, et al. Alone, our reasons may seem petty, but over time they added up and wore us down. Yes, we failed to adapt. We learned we weren’t cut out to live in PR forever, so we decided to leave. People change their minds and move all the time… Is that a crime? We made a life choice to return to the mainland to spend more time with family and friends that we missed. Sure, if we were richer, the Act 20/22 program might have enticed us to stay longer, but probably not. Now I see why vloggers in Puerto Rico never say anything negative about the island.

@@TedCohn I understand everything you say and share some of your points, however calling the locals deaf and the place a dump is just insulting. The rest I can completely understand. Saying PR vs. the mainland isn't either a real comparison, I have lived in the US and visited almost 30 states and can tell you that every single issue you mentioned can be found in many states, and on a bigger scale. Also, putting out a video almost 4 years after you left, repeating issues you have already explained various times makes me think you were just looking for plenty of views, and you nailed it. kudos for that, your video it's being discussed in many classrooms, my child told me that two teachers talked about it. Also, bringing some points 4 years later might be outdated, for example, you can pay at the pump on various stations, all Shell and Total. I agree with you 100% on being closer to family, it is the main reason I live on this island and not across the ocean over in Europe, so sincerely, I hope you are doing great wherever you are.

Watching a lot of videos from Maui because of the recent fire I see many similarities between Puerto Rico and Hawai'i. The natives are leaving because they've been priced out of the market. The predatory land grabbing and local government corruption is a serious problem. My advice to the Puerto Rican native people is choose your representatives carefully. They're not as concerned about you as much as lining their own pockets.
